Playing GTA III for the first time in 2009!

Hi there guys!

As the title says I'm currently playing Grand Theft Auto III for the very first time.

Before you go like crazy, or ban me or close my thread I want to justify myself tounge.gif

Back then in 2001, when GTA III was released my computer was a real crap (Some generic AMD K6-II 400 Mhz + 64 MB SDRAM tounge.gif) but that wasn't the main reason I couldn't play GTA. I was just too noob with videogames, and even knowing the existence of GTA II for the PSX, I didn't realize the revolutionary potential that III had.

A year later, the game was still young and thanks to a awful storm my compy died so I got a new one! That was just another pile of crap anyways xD (A Celeron from the PIII era, with 800 Mhz and 128 MB of SDRAM).

I stuck to that PC as my "advanced" gaming platform until 2006, the time I got my first PS2 biggrin.gif

But I chose GTA San Andreas first! (A choice I don't regret 'cuz I love that game, omg it blew away 6 months of my life the first run)

And thing is, I never ever really wanted to play III on the PS2. So, I finally got it after we bought another computer, that I thought was the right one. That was 2007.

I installed the game, tried it and then.....the performance sucked!!!! cry.gif

I wanted to kill myself! My brand new Pentium D with the GMA 3000 Chipset wasn't able to run a miserable game from 2001.

So, I was so pissed off that I uninstalled it and hated my computer for years....until I discovered the driver updates + a fresh o.s. installation and TADA!!!

Here I am, playing the game already (at last).

I just wanted to start this thread to make some kind of diary with my fresh impressions and stuff I notice throughout the game. THis is not a rant. Hope you've enjoyed my story, and please see this thread as a way to revive your early days with the great....the unique....the amazing Grand Theft Auto III!

So. Update 1: Been playing it for some days now, I'm really doing it slowly. I've completed just 11 missions (Curious thing: The number of total missions is clearly showed) and I'm currently doing my second job for Tony Cipriani and some advanced mission with that mechanical guy.

*Note: I'm aware the grammar of this post probably sucks. I'm really tired today and it's like 3AM in the morning. Oh well xD

Gta3 was my first game which i bought. It was first 3d game in gta world and dont forget this,

gta vice city, san andreas, liberty city stories and vice city stories was build on gta3 engine.

that makes gta3 a classic. (imo)

but my advice is, play lcs first, then gta3. you will understand the story of gta 3's liberty city.

You can play it on emulator if you have a good PC(Dual core or better).

My first version of GTAIII was a fake, i was so pissed off as it wasn't bought through a store.

But waiting for a good version was well worth it, back when i was used to playing the N64 and PS1, GTAIII was a big upgrade.

The first time I played GTA III was in early 2002. We would've got in October 2001, but it was banned, and later re-released.

It was a moment I never forgot. Seeing those words "Give me Liberty" pop up, and the sight of the gritty Portland in the background, and standing along side 8 Ball before getting in the orange Kuruma. It's always stuck with me.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that game would be so influential in the game industry. wink.gif

I still own my original PS2 copy, and I'll never part with it. Much like all of my GTA copies.

Nah I bought the copy that was censored, because initially it was out over here, but it got pull off the shelves, and got re-released a few months later.

That's the copy I bought. wink.gif

I bought it on the original release date, its exactly the same only with hookers and the game gets stuck at 98%.

I, like OnePiece, waited in line with my dad to buy it the first day. It was the day that changed my life.

It doesn’t matter if you started playing GTA III when it first came out, or even a hundred years from now; it’s always a great game. smile.gif

I didn’t play GTA III until after I had already played San Andreas and Vice City first. I played the three games in the reverse order that they came out, GTA III being the last, and it’s still a great game.

I bought GTA III brand new in 2006; it was so popular then that it was still being sold new on the internet. I think it’s still available new (aside from Direct2Drive or Steam).

Any PC GTA game after San Andreas just seems like Rockstar got too full of themselves; San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA III are timeless.

Agreed. GTA 4 is lacking the original feel the previous 3 (PC)/5 (ps2 players) offered.

San Andreas was the first GTA game I played the story of. I for GTA 3 sometimes after and I had played Vice City before both (but hadn't owned it myself). I played Vice City's story before GTA III and around that time I was a pretty bad player using cheats and anything of any sorts making the mission passable with ease. Nowadays I can pass all of the GTA games all the way to 100% without much problem with a few exceptions (some side-missions etc..)

After playing the trilogy, I got LCS and VCS on ps2 and both games were having the same amazing feeling III, VC and SA offered. I really hope R* release them on PC. And I have never had IV but a friend of mine had a PS3 and I borrowed it with GTA4 for a while to finish the game. Nothing special to be honest.

GTA III was, for me too, the last 3D GTA I got. The first 3D GTA I got a good look at was Vice City on the PC at my friends house and it was simply awesome! I couldn't believe how big and gorgeous the Miami-like city was, so I got one for myself too. But a few years ago I decided to get GTA 3 on my PC and I basically enjoyed it more than any other at the time. The stations and gunshot noises were what really captured me. The gunshot noises were a lot more real than the San Andreas toy-gun like noises. But yeah, GTA III remains a timeless classic for me.

What LCS?crap? No way...LCS made me re love the series as I played SA(don't get me wrong I like SA,but it's not really the best for me) and after that I bought my PSP in late 2007 and played LCS only this year(yeah I know) since I have LCS I am on this forum.

Thanks for all the warm replies biggrin.gif

I'm not playing LCS for obvious reasons: I dont own the game yet. Maybe some other time smile.gif

(Btw, is it me or LCS has better graphics and effects than GTA III?)

I've been playing III quite a lot already.

It's a nice game but being the first in the 3D-Series it needs a lot of fixes.

Some new things I noticed are: The physics are terrible, even the cars on Vice City handle better than this. tounge.gif

You can't jump off the car while driving. That's very annoying, specially when your car is on fire.

The char can't climb on walls and of course, he doesnt know how to swim.

Basically there are NOT playable indoor environments.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving this game so far biggrin.gif

So....Update Number 2!

26% Complete! Woot! 1/4 of the game is gone already, and it was almost all about the story-based missions. I'm enjoying the second Island now, what a lovely place, isnt it? ^^

My last mission was the last mission (tounge.gif) for Ray . That "Plaster Blaster" mission was so over the top, it was so funny! The injured guy was a mummy!

Don't forget LCS is available on PS2 as well (same appeals to VCS).

And LCS has better graphics than III for obvious reasons. It came out 4 or 5 years after.

I wouldn't call LCS crap, but for me it's my least favourite GTA. I just could never get into the game at all.

I just found it boring in, and out of missions quite honestly. VCS was SO much better IMO.

Update Number 3!

I finished the story-based missions biggrin.gif

It was really fast. Just 34% of the game is based upon the "story".

The ending was a total wtf moment, because it seems like Claude has no heart. He saved Maria Latore just to kill her because she talks a lot???

LOL!!

Yeah I agree with that. Although later GTAs feature the mafia theme I feel GTA III's depiction is the most spot on.

Actually GTA III got me into the Mafia genre. Thanks to it I'm now a fan of Goodfellas, Casino, The Godfather trilogy etc.
