Slamman
Looking at the latest Edge magazine, EA / black cover, it has an article with Michael Pachter and some other studio heads like John R. of EA... Expressing how they feel the manufacturers of gaming consoles will proceed. Good article, even though their historic console time line left out the 3DO and NeoGeo!! Anywho, it's ultimately predicted that 8 years will be the next gap between consoles in the lead, and some of the factoring will be the "get out of debt free" card, Estimated that both Sony and Microsoft are looking at climbing back from 3 million in lost investment on their respective consoles. Sony has value in it's PS2 still doing well, but the original Xbox even lost money, whereas the PS2 did well from it's earliest days as I can tell. Predicted, BTW, Michael Pachter thinks, Microsoft will have a new Xbox in up to 3 years time, Sony...longer? Also of note, some strong opinion on the Wii HD unit out possible next year, fall. It will not be better then the 360 or PS3, and Pachter says anyone thinking it WILL surpass those two "is on drugs". The soundbites are great. We hear one multi system developer say that making games for release day on new hardware is like designing the brakes for a running car as it hurtles at full speed towards a cliff!! You can see, making the software with everything in place is highly beneficial, however, the PC and gamers who thrive on the best performance, etc., they will probably drive the PC gaming market and there will be a niche there but nothing vast in comparison, and Pachter thinks it's such a small crowd of enthusiests that it "doesn't matter". He likes you PC gamers alright!! Anyway, Some of it's nice to know considering the hardware cost, most railing against constant PC upgrades, the industry sees that as well I suppose Edited July 1, 2009 by Slamman
yzzybones
that's exactly what we need...new consoles...3 years.
Rebel
You know..it would be nice to maybe get some links to this or you know these soundbites you speak of. Its obviously to be expected that new consoles are going to be coming out in some years time no matter what. I'm surprised its going to be another 3 years though for the 360, I was thinking maybe they'd release one a little later than that. The thing with PC gaming is true though, you do need to get more upgrades over the coming years to be able to play newer PC games but that's just common sense really. And if you save money away and look around for some good deals then its not as expensive as you think.
Slamman
I'm reporting the newstand edition, and we can't use scans anymore due to legal problems, if there's an online version, it maybe delayed due to sell thru profits. I know one magazine where BACK ISSUES are available online, after some time when the magazine is selling at cost. Makes sense, but at the same time, a good deal to archive references in periodicals, I agree, I'd love to photographically recall the articles, but I'm not that good! It was a few developers offering their guesses on what the console companies will do, most have a good idea what they are developing WITH and FOR WHOM. As stated, it's difficult to get good software timed with a release. One of the designers says the KIT is good, for PS3 and Xbox, the tools they need are now up to date and it maybe costly, but FAR less hassle to design games on the platforms. Wii HD sounds interesting and I suspect the next advanced hardware to come to market. Should add, that those doing hardware updates, the timing seems great to concentrate on the PC end, as stated, we know they're making improvements that will significantly impact the PC horsepower and landscape. Thing is, this article is biased in a small respect, not overtly, except for Pachter's views, he seems a Sony fanboy at the end of the day. Anyway, I'd wait a bit on PC for a year at least, let prices fall a bit Edited July 1, 2009 by Slamman

Slamman
The thing to remember is several noted Insiders offer their take, and they often are aware before anyone else what projects they need to have in the pipe, when new hardware is being devised, they need the toolkits as well as the software to come out with the machines. SO, it's most likely the Wii will be first, with Xbox to follow. Remember, based upon the PS2 sales, Sony expects 10 years from the PS3 in terms of overall life, and they planned that number for some time, it's the magazine EDGE's summation that it will be 8 years for 360 and PS3 overall
