Gamernotnerd
I gust got a Cobra 400-watt inverter for a rather long trip I'm taking, the instructions say not to use the cigarette lighter-adapter for loads above 150 watts, my laptop charger uses 175 watts, the direct battery cable is too short, and I don't want to put the inverter under the hood, the cable is a 2 AWG cable. Any tips?
dog_day_sunrise
Does you car not have 12v outputs as well as a cigarette lighter? It would probably run fine on one of them, I know people who've run 600w+ car PC's off 12v outputs. Otherwise you might have to run it off of a second battery. Mr. O
Well if you only have a cig lighter outlet then just make the cable to the battery longer, cut and splice not hard, just have to have to get the right connectors since it is a large guage wire. But don't do it if you don't think you can wire it right. Electric fires are no good. Edited July 1, 2009 by Mr. O
Mae King Fuch
I gust got a Cobra 400-watt inverter for a rather long trip I'm taking, the instructions say not to use the cigarette lighter-adapter for loads above 150 watts, my laptop charger uses 175 watts, the direct battery cable is too short, and I don't want to put the inverter under the hood, the cable is a 2 AWG cable. Any tips? like he said:you've got to splice the line-side conductor with a length of 2awg wire long enough to get to the battery.400watts is'nt much, but i would'nt push the factory wiring.it's unsuitable at best, and a fire hazard at worst.you're going to need a crimper and butt-splices(hypress sleeve is the proper term)the guys at the parts store should be able to show you what you need to do.if you have any more questions, ask.i'm an electrician
