Rebel
Maybe its me, but I don't understand why everyone's freaking out about it still ( or even why they did in the first place ) its just like any flu to be honest..you are more susceptible to the symptoms if you are young/old then its obviously a higher risk of death with any other aggressive flu. Its just one of those things. I've been full of a cold for the past week, but its nothing serious.

Otter
I think the real reason for the WHO's alert status is the rapidity at which this flu is spreading and evolving. While it's relatively benign now, it has the potential to become a major problem - it's a pre-emptive thing.
Breaking Bohan
I think swine flu is in the news for a number of reasons: 1. s/flu spreads like wildfire; 2. noone has natural immunity to swine flu; 3. there is no vaccine for s/flu; 4. s/flu was killing primarily younger and healthier people, not just the elderly 5. the WHO declared a Pandemic (which rarely happens) 6. the swine flu could Mutate at any time into a more lethal flu strain, and if that happens we are all in deep sh*te! As you can see there is valid reason for concern. I just hope I'm not on an island when the swine flu arrives at my door.

Breaking Bohan
Also, let's not forget that there are at least one case of a strain of swine flu found in Denmark that was resistant to Tamiflu (an antiviral drug used to treat Swine Flu). People can say how harmless it really is but I'm going to side with the qualified doctors and scientists of the WHO. Exactly. The danger isn't the harm it has done so far. The danger is that it CAN and likely WILL mutate, and if it becomes more lethal: there is no vaccine; people have no immunity; it spreads very quickly. If that happens we are funked! ------- Also, the flu is not a joke: The pandemic lasted from March 1918 to June 1920,[3] spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. It is estimated that anywhere from 50 to 100 million people were killed worldwide,[4][5] or the approximate equivalent of one third of the population of Europe.[6][7][8] An estimated 500 million people, one third of the world's population (approximately 1.6 billion at the time), became infected.[5] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_flu

Britain has officially reported 7,447 swine flu cases and three deaths, but officials acknowledge the real number of cases is far higher, since many with the virus have not been tested. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/articl...BpmuBQD996EK4G4 .... ------------------------ That sounds bad ... that sounds like a lot of flu on one big island. They said the same of Bird Flu and SARS. Look at the post above. 7,447 cases and out of that, THREE deaths. The "regular" flu has a higher fatality rate than that by far. Breaking Bohan
A nine-year-old girl has become the fifth person with swine flu to die in the UK. The child from south London had "serious underlying health problems", NHS London has said. Last week a 19-year-old man from south London, also with underlying health problems, died after contracting the virus. London is the second-worst affected area. On Friday, the capital had more than 1,900 cases. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england...don/8136629.stm ------------------------- It seems that every day more and more people are dying from the swine flu. Wash your hands people. The really sad thing is that this disease could kill millions of people in Africa, and the rest of the world will probably do nothing about it. [SM]CJZera
I just cant stand people getting all scared for some virus that's LESS EFFECTIVE at killing than freakin NORMAL FLU, okay it kills, but just look at how many people die and how many cases there are? God, here in Uruguay the only AD-thingy we got about Diseases is about Dengue fever and the Mosquitos, but the ONLY precaution to swine flu is washing hands and that's all, however, those people over at Argentina (no offence) seem scared because 48 of god knows how many cases died there up to the point of making winter vacation longer and even considering the case of having kids study AT HOME via internet, I think that's a bit too much. Hell, I bet coconuts falling kill more people than H1N1

1066ant
Everyone who has died in the U.K suffers from one of severl things. A: Very old B: Very young C: "serious underlying health issues" In developing countries many more people will die, but many more people die there of disease anyway. SO it not unexpected these countries will sufer worse. Developed countries should not fare badly at all, the only problem is this virus is highly contagious, more so than normal flu. Something more worrying is that in the U.K. an average of 1 in 3 people will get cancer at some point in their lives, thats got a far higher death rate than bloody swine flu. Cursed
There has been a case of swine flu at my school. They're not closing it though. Thinking about it, I was ill a few weeks back and now looking at it, a lot of my symptoms match those of swine flu, I had a runny nose, sore throat, fever, chills, body aches, loss of appetite, tiredness and slight diarrhea. Lasted for a few days, but I still went to school. Could have easily been normal flu or stomach flu I suppose, but a lot of people are suffering from colds at the moment, so I should imagine there is some panic. To be honest, I would never even think about wasting the doctors time if I had flu like symptoms, so I may have even had swine flu. I don't really care to be honest.
