Are we gonna need a bigger boat to take down Goodfellas?

Jaws doesn't do anything for me. Not to say it's bad, but this is a real easy decision. I watched Goodfellas recently on TCM, and found myself loving it all over again.

No contest, although had Alien pulled through instead, I'd have a hard time deciding.

Goodfellas is incredibly overrated. Some great moments, but it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth - and not from any over-arching moral dilemmas - and I don;t have an ounce of sympathy for pretty much anyone in the film. Except for Paulie.

Jaws, on the other hand, is a thriller masterwork.

Jaws. Anyone that says that Goodfellas had such an impact that it stopped people from going into Brooklyn, then you'd probably call them retarded. Jaws on the other hand. Well, some people still wont go into the ocean.

The scene with Quint's monologue about being stranded in the ocean along, in my mind, puts Jaws over the top. But I'm sure the majority of you, will choose Goodfellas, because it has gangsters and Robert DeNiro. I hope you sleep well at night.

Goodfellas had such a cultural impact, not saying Jaws was bad but no comparison to Goodfellas.

Same here, although I actually liked Henry Hill at the start but by the second half he was a drug riddled, wife beating, cheating asshole which wasn't fun to watch considering he was the main character. Everyone turned to sh*t by the second half.

Jaws though, is a heart-pounding ride all the way through. You never know when the shark will pop up, so you're bracing yourself for the moment but it still always gets you. The head coming out the boat still makes my heart jump a little, I always think it's going to pop a second before, so I'm wondering where it is then BAM.

I find Goodfellas a pretty harmless, inoffensive watch. Completely enjoyable but it is only two shades above an average gangster flick. Jaws on the other hand is up there with all the great suspense movies.

Jaws- without a great deal of thought needed.

Henry didn't beat his wife... Or did i miss some deleted scenes?

Anyway, Goodfellas outclasses Jaws. they're not even in the same league in my opinion

I really like Goodfellas, it's my favourite gangster movie after The Godfather but when it comes against a movie that has such an impact on my life as Jaws, then it has no chance whatsoever.

I first saw Jaws when I was 7 years old and no movie has ever gripped me as much in the past 15 as it has. It started off my obsessive fascination with sharks, it has made me terrified, to this day, to go past the 3 foot water level at beaches and it's made me realise that even the simplest of scripts can be the best ever.

The brilliant characters, the witty and tense dialogue, the boat sequence, Quint's monologue and of course good old Brucie (the shark) are just some of the elements that make Jaws one of the greatest movies of all time. And yes, I do consider it a thriller and not a horror movie as so many think of it.

I'd really love to see Jaws get past this round and make it into the top 8 of this competition. I really believe it is top 5 material. My other nomination, Aliens, has already progressed so I'd really like both of my nominations in the top 8. tounge.gif

Jaws has probably done more for cinema than what Goodfellas has. They're both excellent films but I'm going to give my vote to Jaws.

I think that was the one point of you know, character development when we see an Harry slowly desend into a c*nt down to stress, drugs and paranoia.

You werent meant to like by the end, you were meant to see what an absolute mess he had become.

Exactly. Some people are too conditioned to the happy-ending stories that Hollywood usually pumps out. They mistaken not liking charachters as a reflection of the film's performance rather the good portrayal or narrative of a story.

If I want to see a tragedy, I'll throw in Hamlet. Goodfellas fell short on so many levels - I'm not saying it's a bad film at all, but it's nothing compared to Jaws and lucky to be considered even for the top 50.

Here are two films I wasn't crazy about, but I went with Goodfellas. People love it a little too much, but it still is a very good film. Jaws on the other hand just didn't do it for me, I'm not nostalgic about it. It was okay but far from thrilling for me.

Not a huge fan of jaw's like a lot of people are. Of course i like the film, just not a mega fan like most.

I can watch Goodfellas how many times i wish and yet it still keeps me entertained and hooked.

Yeah, I think I know..

I guess it had a more realistic approach to how he f*cked up his life, but it got really boring. "Which wasn't fun to watch" was a bad choice of words by me.

PinkFloyd: Yeah I usually like sad endings compared to happy jolly ones (see: The Mist, Dead Man's Shoes etc) but like I said, Goodfellas got very tedious. nothing seemed to happen in the second half.

@Hart:I suppose that's a good a reason as any. The fun did leave the film but it did do what it was supposed to do.
