Sergei Andropov
When I start playing, everything usually works fine (indeed, it actually may run a little too fast since it's on high priority, more on this later), but after about five minutes my fps always plummets to around four or five. After a while, it will get up to (estimating) 8-16, but that still sucks. Moreover, such a low frame rate seriously affects the game itself; the range of RPGs and missiles is greatly reduced and the other drivers have such bad reflexes that they always crash into each other at stoplights (which is funny the first several times but then just gets annoying). It also makes everyone walk, run, and drive slowly; this can be fixed with the "speeditup" cheat, but this then makes the sound for the cut scenes out of sync. I know that my computer can run it well, because it does for the first five minutes or so, and on one occasion did it for about an hour. As a result of trying to fix various bugs and just deal with the lag, I run the game in Win98 compatibility mode at high priority with all the graphics settings as low as possible and with the frame limiter off (when I turn it on I get a guesstimated 10-12 fps from the get go). My specs: Vista SP1 GeForce 7150M with 128 MB dedicated memory (the most my BIOS will allow) AMD Turion 64 X2 TL60, 2000 Mhz, dual core 2.00 GB RAM
Ryan
Any mods installed? Did you download the game or did you buy it?
Sergei Andropov
No mods, and I bought the game.
lil weasel
How about cheats: Adreneline? Playing from a No-CD-crack?
Girish
You'll be better off leaving the Frame Limiter turned on. I doubt if you'll get any higher fps than that though. Vista is a memory hogging OS and running it with a mobile GPU will result in lag. I would suggest switching to XP, but if you're not ready to do that, then try updating your video drivers and install the latest SP2 for Vista. Sergei Andropov
I have used adrenaline, but the problem predates that. I'm not using a no-CD-crack. The Frame Limiter yields too few fps to be worthwhile (nowhere near the 25 fps it's supposed to be). I can get substantially higher fps by leaving it off. Even that, though, is nowhere near what I know my system is capable of, because the problem only begins after a period in which the fps is quite high. The impression I get (and this is only an impression)is that it starts off with the VRAM being (essentially) empty, then proceeds as normal until it's been filled. When that happens, and only when that happens, it begins to delete the stuff it's no longer using and to allot virtual memory. Since it waits until the last instant, this results in a very large initial drop, which then recovers some — but not enough — once it gets into the swing of things. How do I measure by frame rate? hetment
You mean how too see your fps?/ Fraps is useful and frame limiter on caps your fps to 25 fps so its better to turn it off for smoother gameplay..
Girish
Turning off the frame limiter is recommended for high end systems where your in-game fps is too high to notice any fluctuations. For example, my game runs at a fps of higher than 60. Turning off the frame limiter causes fluctuations, but since the human eye can process only 60 frames per second, the fluctuation in my case becomes negligible. Even though your system meets the recommended requirement, I have found 128 MB to be insufficient for smooth gameplay. And please note that, the 7150M is an integrated video card. So, what you have is shared memory, not dedicated memory. Shared memory is not as fast as VRAM and to top that all, quite a lot of your system RAM is being eaten up by Vista and it's various features. It's obvious that your game is going to suffer. GTArv
Perhaps your notebook is over heating? Make sure that it gets plenty of ventilation, clean the fans of possible.
supermortalhuman
GTArv took the thought right from my brain, sounds like heat.
Sergei Andropov
Yep, it's heat. I was able to get it to run normally for 15 to 20 minutes by improving the ventilation, and even after that it worked considerably better. Unfortunately, there's no way to clean the fan. Lioshenka
Take it apart. Make sure you have some thermal paste handy first though.
Sergei Andropov
I was able to use compressed air and tweezers to get the dust bunnies out, so it works fine now.
xhunter
I had a same problem with NFSU2. Maybe the video card is the problem...
