Fozzy Fozborne
Dude, the 8600GT came out in 2007. It was awful then and it will be awful for eternity. If you really can't spare an extra $30 for a decent power supply, why buy a crappy card now that will most likely blow your power supply? Just wait until you have some extra cash then buy the 8800GT and a new supply. Also, if you get a moderately new PSU, you won't have to get any cable adapters since virtually all of them have PCI connectors now. An 8600GT (which requires, according to NVidia at least 18 amps, 21 recommended) on a 14 amp PSU is asking for trouble. A 3870 on a 250 watt PSU with only 14 amps? Those require (according to ATI/AMD) 450 watts and 26 amps. @Liek Power supplies are usually wildly underrated when they come in manufactured PC's. Also, all PSU's aren't the same. I read a story that compared and contrasted a well-built 400 watt power supply and a generic "650" watter. The 650 started choking at 300 watts and gave up the ghost completely at 400 something watts, taking the entire PC with it. It's more than possible you got a good 250 watt PSU that was actually a better one that was under-rated (why would they do that? If it's a manufactured PC, they want you to buy another one when you upgrade and where will the average consumer buy a new PSU? From the manufacturer that made their PC! So HP or whatever gets to sell you a $130 500 watt power supply that is actually the same one they just sold you with the case!). But I don't think this is the case with his computer, a 14 amp single 12 volt rail says it all... it's a crappy PSU.

I'm currently running a x1300 and this site says the x1300Pro takes 139watts and the x1300XT takes 135watts loaded:- Just so you know. I'm more of a casual gamer: I barely even play games during the school year. I'd just like to play IV and its not very playable at all on my x1300 and for the 8600GT:- GeForce 8600GT-based cards do not require external PCIe power. NVIDIA rates the maximum board power consumption at 43-watts
Democrab
FYI, thats total system power consumption, not just the Graphics Card, iirc the x1300 is like 20watts. Also, Hipro is a brand well known for being over-rated and blowing up when they get to about 200watts.

(I could run all the way up to the 3870 I think, correct? (also, keep I'n mind I'm running a system that takes alot less power than the test system here) Power Consumption Results: When it comes to power consumption the ATI Radeon HD 3450 looked pretty good across the board and was the lowest card that we have ever tested on this system. At full load the entire system consumed 142W , which is impressive to say the least (remember that the test system is a quad-core QX9650 processor, 4GB of memory and an Intel X38 Express chipset). The Radeon HD 3560 used more power at load, but not much more considering the Radeon 3650 has three times the processing power (48GFLOPS versus 174GFLOPS)
Democrab
That's a really out-dated chart, lol. I'd get a Radeon HD4770 512Mb and a really good 400w Corsair , its as fast as a HD4850 and I think it only uses 80watts max.(Which you'll never get to.) Granted, with that PSU.. I wouldn't really trust it at ALL... Get a Low Power 9600GT without the PCIe power connector...
corvettelover
sorry for the bump. but I got the card and its been working amazing! I got a BFG 9500GT 1GB running the newest 190 drivers. runs all my games maxxed (no AA.. I havent tried AA cause I don't like the blurry look AA gives) out at 1680x1050 and 1440x900 (I cant tell the difference fps or image quality wise between 1440x900 and 1680x1050) IV runs very smooth all very high (1.4 patch) never lags @ 1440x900 (if I run it at 1680x1050 I can't bump the visual distance up as high as i can at 1440x900 cause of video memory.. though it runs just as smooth at 1680x1050.. weird) I'm gonna try Bioshock and I might try the Crysis demo. BLTZKRG
If you can save up a little bit more, pick up a 9600GT or an 8800GT. It is surely heaps faster than the 8600 and the 9500, and just for a little price jump.

It is surely heaps faster than the 8600 and the 9500, and just for a little price jump. well, I already bought a BFG 9500GT 1GB OC (30-something dollars including shipping -card its self was only 22 dollars) And as I've mentioned before- it runs all my games perfectly maxxed out at my native res (current have tried NFS Pro Street, NFS Undercover, GTA IV, Sims 3, Kane and Lynch, Turning Point fall of liberty, FEAR..ect and they all run at 1680x1050 (except IV, which I chose to run at 1440x900 cause it looks a bit better than 1680x1050 on IV..less jagged lines) and I'm gonna try Bioshock, Battlefield 2 and possibly the Crysis demo if I have time (I don't get to play games much.. most of those games are my brother/sisters/mine. I only get to use the computer for 1-4-ish hours..usually less) off topic: does anyone else think IV looks lifelike? It looks better than that Crysis game does. I mean in Crysis cars don't even have damn reflections! I do like the palm trees and junglely areas in crysis though Edited July 29, 2009 by corvettelover
