This patch decreased my Performance by 5-15 FPS.

Earlier i had 35-45 FPS and now just ~20-32.

I also have much more pop ups and much more drops.

Clip function is off, but id don't helped much.

So i had to downgrade my game to 1.0.3.0 again. sly.gif

The Horror Is Alive

Got enough of a performance boost to let me run it at 1024x768 without unacceptable lag any more. Good job on that, Rockstar smile.gif

A bit disappointed that there is still no Z-fighting fix. I know, I know, it's specific to only a few cards, but still. It's a really bullsh*t problem. Kinda ruins the experience.

Fixed my z-fighting biggrin.gif (I hope if stays that way). Nvidia 8800gtx.

Thanks for the support Rockstar. I think GTA IV is the best game out there and I really appreciate that you guys try to make the game expirience better and better. At first I had some framerate issues but with some mods from this site and with the patches its not a problem anymore.

Again thx guys for the awesome work, keep it up.

is there a roll back option?? Please say yes

No. You should know you cannot rollback if you have installed the previous patches. They all function similarly. You'll have to reinstall if you want to go back to the third patch.

Now you are talking rubbish. tounge.gif Just install patch 3 over patch 4 and your game will be patch 3. Well, at leat here it is.

I personally would never recommend installing an older patch over a newer patch. You do it that way and you are going to get totally unpredicatable results. A much better way is to keep reinstall the game afresh and only update it to the patch you want.

As said by CC, that isn't recommended and I definitely wouldn't recommend doing that. Chances are that the files updated by patch 4 might be more than the files updated by patch 3. So, installing patch 3 over patch 4 would mean you overwrite a few files and the remaining files stay updated as per patch 4. This might result in compatibility issues and your game may not function the way it is supposed to with individual patches.

If you still would like to take the risk, go ahead. It might not necessarily work for everyone considering the unpredictability of the game and you might end up reinstalling the game anyways. turn.gif

sad to read that, i already knew it but just in case ... WELL let this be a recommendation:

ROLL BACK OPTION IN ALL PATCHES PLEASE

I knew it, the game was running so well, why on earth would i want to update it ... dam

SIDE NOTE: Turning clip capture off to prevent stuttering is not acceptable

R* Toronto didn't say all ! This update isn't for getting more fps bla bla...It's for something what will change a part of GTA IV !!! I know you will say: Bullsh*t but...first take a look at the changed files.

It's something what will change GTA IV (when 1.0.5.0 THE LAST PATCH WILL COME) in 2 parts ! I don't think it will be DLC (like someone sayed) but I think it's....First look at this !

"-Resource management adjustments based on the operating system detected."

So now:GTA IV will detect the operating system: XP or Vista...or 7(but it's a fixed Vista),so will know witch DirectX you have biggrin.gif.

This 1.0.5.0 will have a DirectX 10 support ! Also this patch helped a little % from us with some fps but it's for preparing GTA IV for DX 10 and new sales ! (R* won't sale just 1.0.0.0 with DX 9 anymore)

If you don't trust me,just wait for the ultimate patch !...and take a look at changed files !

This will be the: Next Gold Master Build Pressing !

The next update will not have Dx10 support they would have to practically rewrite the whole damn game to bring Dx10 support. This was just a maintenance update to bring OUR copies into line with the new gold master. There is no hidden agenda here, it's what it says on the TIN stop trying to read into something that isn't there jeez.

That depends. Graphics are handled by RAGE, if the RAGE development team made an update for DirectX 10.0 while the RAGE-API didn't change (thus the GTA implementation wouldn't have to be updated) then it would be a possibility. Nevertheless, I agree that it would be highly unlikely.

Hey R* Toronto. Are you gonna add for the next patch:

-Gym Mod (where you can do muscles and all that like San Andreas);

-Barber Shop;

-Tatoos Shop;

-Tuning for cars.

Just wanah know, that's all.

But it was good if you made this, every people (even me) will say "GTA IV is better than GTA San Andreas".

also like to see new models of mobile phones, more clothes.

btw why is there so many people betting on gameplay changes like tattoos new clothes and taht? this seems to me like performance/bug correction update, i find it very unlikely that airplanes or barber shops are going to be introduced

A patch FIXES problems, it doesn't bring any new content. You should check a dictionary once in a while.

A patch is a small piece of software designed to fix problems with or update a computer program or its supporting data. This includes fixing bugs, replacing graphics and improving the usability or performance.

We won't get tattoos shops, new cars, weapons or anything new. It's a PATCH, a FIX, not new content.

As for the eternal discussion "SA better/worse than IV", I don't give a sh*t. Both are different games, each with its unique features. Play both and have fun, that's what I did.

Stop comparing the games, SA is out a long time ago and so is IV. Just play with what you're given. Rockstar won't lose time updating SA to have GTA IV's features and vice-versa, so why bother? whatsthat.gif

Any particular way to downgrade to 1.0.3.0? I think I might do this as well. At night my lowest fps has dropped from around 26fps to 18 fps. This is not average, it's lowest. But still my system should run this game smooth as can be. I think patch 1.0.3.0 was a lot smoother, for me at least.

So true!

I hate when people mean: i miss that and i miss that, they should do it in next game.

For me that features were wasting of resources and not realy interesting.

I think GTA IV is better, than SA, so if people like SA more, than they should play it and not explain that GTA IV don't have that senseless features.

*my mind you don't have to share it*

@Mudfrog

I had to reinstall the game.

Many files were changed by patch 1.0.3.0 including most or all of the shaders. Patch 1.0.4.0 did not change many files.

These are the only files changed by patch 1.0.4.0 if patch 1.0.3.0 was previously installed:

[patch 3 date/time] < [patch 4 date/time]

02/12/2009 12:16:26 < 05/25/2009 11:56:52 K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\gta4Browser.exe

02/19/2009 14:02:18 < 05/25/2009 11:56:58 K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\gtaEncoder.exe

02/19/2009 14:02:12 < 05/25/2009 11:56:48 K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV.exe

03/11/2009 13:10:56 < 05/28/2009 14:51:46 K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV.exe.cat

03/11/2009 13:08:58 < 05/28/2009 14:50:02 K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\GTAIV.exe.cfg

My game folder is "K:\Games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\", yours will most likely be different.

It is possible to roll back to patch 1.0.3.0 from patch 1.0.4.0 but only if these conditions exist:

1. If patch 1.0.3.0 was previously successfully installed.

2. No files were changed or modified after the 1.0.3.0 patch was installed.

So, just reinstall the 1.0.3.0 patch, it should work. Check the dates (and versions) of the above files in the game folder to be sure that they were replaced with the files you wanted.

If you happened to have a backup of the the v1.0.3.0 game, you could of course just replace the above files. Or, if you haven't patched just yet, copy those five v1.0.3.0 files above, patch to v1.0.4.0 and, if you don't like it, copy back the v1.0.3.0 files.

Note that if you keep the v1.0.3.0 game you will not be able to play online.

If you have modified any of the files then patch 1.0.4.0 may replace them with new (stock) versions. Rolling back to patch 1.0.3.0 will not restore those modified files, the files replaced by patch 1.0.4.0 will remain. Any modified files that you wish to keep should be (should have been) backed up BEFORE applying patch 1.0.4.0 and backed up before attempting to roll back the patch.

More observations after some more play in SP and MP on a machine that was utterly happy with it before (decent quad core, 4GB RAM, 9800GT 1GB, graphics settings comfortably into green in the setup):

Water now looks like someone dropped carbon fibre on it - horrible moiré pattern, especially at night. "Improved" in no way whatsoever. It was lovely before.

Tons of flickering textures despite turning shadows down to low.

Stutter (less after turning clip capture off but still a lot more than before).

And above all, the return of the "out of video memory" fatal error after about 30 mins in MP. Not seen that for many months.

R*, we love you at an unhealthy level on so many general principles and we want to have your children. BUT: please try to grasp the concepts of "fit for purpose" and "of merchantable quality" (the latter is a legally enforceable term in at least one country that's a big market for you). You hit a decent sweet spot in terms of both these concepts at 1.0.2.0 but since then you've just been breaking your own product. Which we have paid money for. Please either issue a replacement patch that's competently coded AND adequately tested on a range of hardware. Or provide a rollback option.
