Staff At Rockstar Don't Know How Cars Work

Grand Theft Auto Dude

the f*cking game has emulated the way car engines work incorrectly.

OH NOES!

As others have stated, this isn't a driving simulator. Would you like to go to a Call of Duty forum and complain that the planes don't function exactly as they would in real life?

LOL! best remark of the year..!

I can't believe I seriously answer this but stiil, on my bike, when I go uphill and I don't shift back my RPM will decrease a lot.. but still I have the low end power to continue.. when I go downhill I release the throttle a bit and it will brake on its engine.. and guess what.. the RPM lowers again... Maybe my bike doesn't know how a real bike works...? smile.gif

In GTA IV you hear the engine slow down along with the speed of the car and this is wrong and this is the point of the thread.

Which is what happens if you're driving a car with a manual transmission, and cannot be bothered gearing down for the hill.

Yeah but does the car slow down? My car is a stick and it is a fast car at that, and mine will lose speed if you hear the engine reving down while going up a hill (because of not being bothered with shifting down as you said). I think that this is just appauling, what kind of programmers are these people? lol.gif I am being facisous here people but, I agree with him it's wrong. Not that I care but, it is wrong.

I remember in san andreas, you would hear the car rpm go up when going up a steep hill, and when rolling down a hill you would hear the engine working. Not a big deal really.

YES! I've played the 3 other games as well, and it just so happens that the GTA SA engine sounds are MORE realistic than GTA IV engine sounds. Try it yourself, do some driving around in the country side and you'll hear the engine respond correctly to certain terrain. RPM will go up when climbing a steep hill, and there are many in GTA SAs countryside for you to test against.

Yeah, this problem definitely is a game killer. I suggest the OP stops playing the game, its terrible.

Who cares? Its probably only easier in the codes like that

well obviously. If they coded the game so that the speed of vehicles is directly proportional to its gear and sound the engine makes (resulting from RPM) as opposed to coding it based on how much energy is needed to move a vehicle across certain terrain I'd say they did it because it is indeed easier to code it that way.

but still, it's very unrealistic, and if you're a 'major motorhead' like I am, this would bother you. and I'm sure if Brucie was a person in real life he'd be raging and throw his whole pc out the window or something.

I bet you don't even have a license, motorhead.. at least it doesn't sound like it...

Were you ever driving a car on a level road then you come up on a hill and you hear the RPM of the car go down as it is struggling to go up the hill?

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle and you come to a slope and you just take your finger off 'W' and let gravity pull your vehicle down the slope and somehow you hear the motorcycle engine working harder as it speeds up going down the hill?

It is for these reasons that Rockstar doesn't know jacksh*t about cars.

In real life if you were accelerating on a flat surface, your RPM would increase (and would change is your car is switching gears but thats behind the point), and when you go up a hill after this acceleration the RPM of your car would INCREASE AS IT IS DOING MORE WORK TO GET ITSELF UP THAT HILL.

Also in real life if you were riding a motorcycle and you just decided to let your bike roll down the hill and stop giving it gas, the engine of this bike WOULD DO LESS WORK (but you will still hear noise because the engine is idle).

i have an mtx125r 2 stroke and when im going down a slope i DO hear the engine gradually working harder. But only when i dont have the clutch depressed. And when i do have the clutch depressed going down a slope thats because my petrol has nearly ran out and im begging to get to the petrol station, v rare.. learn to ride before you have a comment worthy of any bikers time frame.

In fact the driving IMO is pretty awesome, the road has a surface that actually feels like a surface in game, with bumps and undulations, spot on.

The cars respond well and i wish the bikes where a bit faster but thats nothing really.

The one thing that really sucks is when your in a boat and you watch the other boats, a lot of them look like they are floating in the air, that needs to be sorted out.

also, drive a fast car, any of them. Drive them on a long straight and hear it never run out of gears, thats a bit annoying. At the same time, its a GAME, who really,REALLY cares exept for you

dude honestly, get a life

diamins0 you obviously never driven a real motorcycle or a car or you would know that even wind would slow you down at high speeds and "will" rev the engine down.. you just automaticly adjust the throttle in real life...

but in gta you already drive full throttle so nothing left to adjust, that's what makes it feel "unreal" to you.. but if you release the throttle and press it again it will shift back.. you never drive full throttle in real life.. (or most of the times)

imagin driving full throttle on a straight and all over sudden you go uphill.. your engine will rev down for sure... whatever you say... then it's time to shift back.. so I agree they could have made the cars shift back when they struggle, but that wasn't your statement..

I don't know if you ever rented one of those 50cc mopeds on vacation.. it kinda feels the same when going uphill... full throttle.. but still you keep slowing down and the engine struggles..

edit: watch your father's foot when you go uphill in the back of your car.. it goes down.. smile.gif

I don't think he was refering to mopeds lol.giflol.giflol.giflol.gifbiggrin.gif . I kid I kid.

Seriously though yes if you are going down hill and have your car in gear and the clutch engaged you will hear the motor rev up if the hill is steep enough that is to make the car keep picking up speed while in gear. That part is realistic, my car does this as does every other car.

actually mopeds are a good example as you drive them full throttle too.. when you go uphill, you struggle.. and no gears to shift back..

Most modern automatic cars will shift down a gear when you enter an incline and press the accelerator harder. Since GTA has an on/off mechanism for the throttle (i'm not sure what the case is if you're using pedal controllers. Do they have a variable throttle?) it makes it hard to simulate this.

Plus the gear is strung to the speed in GTA IV.

It's funny, people complain about tiny things like this, but don't compliment the tiny things. Has anyone else actually notice that when you change from a forward gear to reverse, you can hear the gear change? Turn the speakers right up, drive forward, stop, and then reverse.

I thought it would be more obvious to complain about the lack of manual gear boxes but whatever floats your boat.....

agreed all the way.. the only thing I noticed when driving upwards where the raindrops on the camera.. really cool they took the trouble to make that... Like they also took the trouble to add gravity to cars and engines..!

yes, what they should have done was not add gravity to cars so that when we accelerate and break static friction the vehicle will float off into the atmosphere and possibly outer space.

I think R* had more important things to work on in the game rather than making sure that the car engines noises were exactly correct for one stupid little moron.

Personally I have always enjoyed the engine SFX in GTA, particularly that of the older games (III, VC, SA).

Not to brag, but I'm pretty good at imitating Vice City's Infernus engine and VC's PCJ engine.

They did that in Vice City too. Dunno why they took it out in SA.

I wish the windscreen wipers worked. That would be mad to the max. monocle.gif

Get a life. Buy a real car. And you'll get the perfect driving physics. Seriously.

A- f*cking -men. When I always see you telling people to f*ck off and telling them that they live in "a third world sh*thole", I don't think gtaforums gives a f*ck about what you think when you obviously don't give a f*ck about what other people think.

There's a reason it doesn't bother you. In fact, there's a reason it hasn't bothered anyone. And that reason is because GTA:IV has it right.

It's diamins0's expectations that are wrong. Odd from a so called 'major motorhead.'

Yep, seems spot on to me too.

If you're in a low enough gear on a motorbike travelling downhill, and take your hands off the throttle and the brake, there will be engine braking and your speed and rpm will decrease.

If you're in a high enough gear with the same conditions there will be no engine braking, your speed and rpm will increase. So what's the problem there?

The car one, well if you're going uphill in a high enough gear the engine will bog down slightly resulting in a lower rpm. If you're in an automatic and it hasn't reduced rpm enough to change down as it has only bogged down slightly, then you get the exact same thing happening as the OP described.

So yes, full marks to R* for getting it right. And an F- to the poster for trying to prove the laws of physics and engine dynamics are wrong.

Good point. Actually I think R* done a great job at capturing how cars work, even some details are overlooked by other driving games. Like when the brakes squeal sometimes. My real life car does that when it gets brake dust on the brake rotors.

Another thing is when the suspension creaks over bumps. Real life cars do that, and how you can blow tires from doing burnouts. Funny how in driving simulators like Gran Turismo something so simple like that is overlooked.
