SyphonPayne
Hmm, guess I'll be taking a trip to a PC shop soon then... Damn . Well, at least it's impossible for me to give in to the temptation of putting the GTS in with the EZ Cool PSU I currently have .Does this mean that the GTS needs that 6 pin connector? It won't run off the PCI-E slot itself? That seems odd... I suppose a PCI-E slot wouldn't give enough power, huh? Thanks WL . Cold Fusion Yes, it will need the connector to function, just as most mid-range-and-up cards. If you don't connect it, the card will not show any video, or may "scream" (beep loudly) at you, or maybe even run, but in "low-power" AKA slow-as-hell mode. Before you make a run to the PC shop, check your new PSU for a connector that looks like this: If it's like the one on the left, simply plug it into that port when you have the card installed. If it's like the right one, use the 6-pin piece and just leave the 2-pin piece to the side. The 2-pin piece may be connected to the 6-pin piece, creating an 8-pin connector so then simply take off the extra 2 pins if it allows, if it doesn't, chances are it has a 6-pin somewhere in the bunch, or else it's a weird PSU . Some cards require two of these, some require an 8-pin and a 6-pin, just depends on the card, but the GTS 640 only needs one 6-pin. If by some odd chance it doesn't have it, then get the molex-to-pci-e adapter (a lot of cards come with it) in which case you connect 2 molex connectors to the one PCI-E adapter: Molex connectors are on the left of course , if you didn't know that then I would be weary of you replacing the PSU . As for the guy saying the guy on the phone saying the GTS 640 is 10% faster than the GT, even in the case of the 112 version of the 640 that is not true. This may be true for the GTS 512, but certainly not the GTS 640. As I had previously stated, the 112 GTS 640 may be close to the GT in performance, but definitely not 10% faster. You'll have to just find out which one it is when you install it. Edited July 9, 2009 by SyphonPayne
cold fusion 33
Thanks again Syphon, another really helpful and constructive post . You should get an award here on the boards or something! Heh, I knew which ones the Molex's were . I'm not bad when it comes to PC's generally, but ask me about GPU's? I'm straight out of knowledge there . So, it's probably likely that the OCZ 500W that I get will have one of the connectors that will work with the GTS, right? Otherwise, I'll just have to get the molex converter. Ah, damn guy on the phone! Oh well I suppose . Cold Fusion
anus
Yep, the PSU you're going to buy has a 6+2 pin PCI-E connector. So you don't need to buy a converter. Just plug in the 6 pin cable to the card and keep the 2 pin cable aside and you're done .
cold fusion 33
Awesome . Now all I have to do is wait for the 9500GT to sell on eBay and then buy the new PSU . The day of putting it all back together draws closer and closer .
SyphonPayne
Btw what brand is that GTS 640? I have bought EVGA cards and XFX cards which both came with those adapters. I never needed them though, I'd give one to ya if I could . Your card might have come with them, but as Warlord. said your new PSU will have the proper connector anyway, so you won't need an adapter. cold fusion 33
It's an XFX, I don't know how "good" that brand is, because I haven't heard much about them before. But anyway, it didn't come with the PCI-E adapter, but that doesn't matter like I say, because it makes sure I don't put the GTS in with my current PSU and risk killing everything . And yeah, the new PSU will have one .
3niX
Well... XFX is a good brand in general (so is EVGA). Though its strange it didnt come with an adapter (because its a fairly old card and many PSUs didnt have them at the time). cold fusion 33
So, just to re-iterate, this PSU will definitely work with my PC and not need a molex power converter? Because I'm going to buy it tonight, and if it was the wrong one, I don't know what I'd do... http://www.awd-it.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=3848 Thanks, Cold Fusion
