Hmmm nice bike

Well then, I guess that settles everything. 9 years after its announcement, Agent is officially dead. Unless work is still being conducted and they've decided to rename the project, which I doubt. The game was in development for much longer than people realize, and it started out as a PS2 game before eventually becoming a PS3 title. I really wonder what was up with the development of the game. Part of me wonders if Rockstar wasn't even sure of what direction to take the game in. That and the fact that other major projects and sequels took precedence over a brand new IP, and they probably had little time to do anything with Agent.

Well it's safe to assume the original PS2 version at Rockstar North just wasn't working, even as they transferred it to Rockstar San Diego to be an Xbox game instead, before it was sent back to Rockstar North and rebooted to become the "PS3 Exclusive" before getting shelved again in 2011 when all studios were starting to focus full time on GTAV. It's just been one of those games they just couldn't nail on what they wanted to be it seems.

It's interesting looking back at what little concept art and development screenshots we even have of the game (and I'm amazed that the prototype/development screens even leaked). The earliest one from the PS2 era was just a single city block that looked kind-of run down. Then we saw some sort of Egypt/North Africa looking building, and another setting that looked Medeterranian. Then the concept art looked like it was set in the Alps. While you could say that the game might have just had multiple settings and locations, didn't the Agent files discovered on the Max Payne 3 disc seem to indicate that the game was set mostly in a snowy environment? If that's the case, maybe it did go through several complete re-dos before they just said "f*ck it" and stopped working on it.

I think it clearly does..they kept renewing probably because they thought they might still make the game but now they are done with it.

Game definitely sounded interesting but Rockstar has enough interesting IP's and considering how long they take at this point it's better to focus on the existing one's

I wish R* would just officially say something and put this matter to rest, they've been pulling our strings with this game for too long now.

 

Honestly, I'm amazed the game is even still listed on their website. One thing that confuses me is why they even announced it in the first place despite having almost nothing to show. Pesronally, I think it was to give Sony something big to announce at E3 since it was being developed as a PS3 exclusive. Even back in 2009, the Rockstar brand could get people all hyped up.

So I went to the "wrong" Rockstar Games subreddit and found this that appears to have gone unnoticed.

 

Secondary speaking roles for “Agent” as of early 2010

 

Could be bullsh*t but Penny Moffat is described as follows:

 

"British Female (45) - Penny Moffat is a celebrated war correspondent who covered the Vietnam War from the hotel swimming pools of Saigon. Alcoholic and depressed she is searching for her next big assignment."

 

There are a whole bunch of mostly inconsequential characters listed, if it is a fabrication it isn't a very ambitious one.

Wouldn't surprise me if there was some truth to that. Some of these sound like the kind of characters that Rockstar would come up with, plus Moffat is Sam and Dan Houser's mother's maiden name. Could just be BS as well though.

Some of you might remember some findings that were made in Max Payne 3 about Agent by several people including me, including path files (which are in the favela level files), and others might remember a project called Medieval that some members of the forum had referred to before as being cancelled.

 

First things first, let's focus on what supposedly is from Agent - the Alpine and Desert settings.

As you can see, there are objects associated with each of the environments we already knew about, and a new one named Forest!

 

 

Now, for the second part. As I scrolled through the file, I noticed a few lines about "underwater tests" and "wheat crops". Initially, I ignored those because I thought they were from GTA SA, or even GTA IV development leftovers, but, to my surprise, I went to check both games, and this information was in neither of the games...

Do you remember my mention of Medieval above? The mysterious other Rockstar project that was seemingly cancelled (or could it be an Agent codename...)? Well, I'm just going to leave this here:

There is a crap tonne of procedural object definitions for underwater scenarios, meadows, wheat farms, all with a MED_ prefix. There is a chance this could mean something else, but I honestly don't see it meaning much else, and in the event this is still for Agent, it's still very very interesting information.

GTA IV has some information in its procedural.dat file, but none of the information about the Agent/Medieval scenarios you can find in MP3, not even the underwater part.

GTA V no longer used this procedural object file format, and those things are not in GTA V's procedural.meta/ymt either.

I wish we get this game at some point in the future. With now better facial animations and models, Agent can also serve as a spiritual successor to L.A.Noire by including interrogation and clue-finding mechanics. The potential lack of an Online component as a monetization medium for R* could be one reason why they'd stick to GTAs and RDRs.

I wouldn't be too shocked. At some point, Rockstar will release a new IP and who's to say they wouldn't want to release their Cold War espionage game if they wanted to release a new IP. The idea of a game with a cold war espionage setting is very cool in of itself.

 

If they ever do decide to release Agent, it won't be 'Agent' anymore, it will probably just be a spiritual successor loosely connected to what Agent once was in behind closed doors in 2009. If they do ever decide to release it it probably won't be under the name of Agent either, so I doubt they're too worried about losing those copyrights.

 

I doubt Rockstar would want to just release RDRs and GTAs, from entry level artists and coders to senior level positions like Dan and Sam themselves, everyone is interested in creating something new and fresh.

 

tbh if i can speak for my own personal desires... i really just want a cold war espionage game created under rockstar since they have a such a grand vision for their games. a cold war espionage game which has the detail and scope comparable to rdr2 would be insane.

Yes, also, RDR1 has leftovers of this San Diego version of Agent, I think I posted them somewhere in this thread. RDR1 has San Diego Agent stuff and MP3 has North Agent Stuff.

The Doomsday Heist stuff in GTAO sort of makes sense after reading that. Very "Agent" -like content.

Interesting. I don't understand how they were aiming for historical accuracy if they were inspired by Bond movies, like the mention of a car turning into a submarine. With that sc-fi stuff in a 70s setting, it'd not feel right and I'd not like it.

It makes sense now why GTA V has so much secret agent crap in it. I always theorized that they were probably missions from Agent that were repurposed into GTA, and now we know for sure that this was probably the case.

 

Kind of stupid how the Housers were just expecting people to know all about some show from the 70s that most Americans have probably never seen or heard of. They clearly needed to provide more examples of what they wanted or just go with something more familiar (like James Bond) to explain their idea. That'd be like going to a game studio Japan and asking them to make a game based on "Mannix" and expecting them to just know what you're talking about.

 

It sounds like they couldn't even settle on exactly how they wanted the story to go either I'm glad we at least got RDR out of it though. If it wasn't for the work they did on Agent, they would have had much of a base to work on with RDR.

Nah, the engine was already pretty much laid out with Table Tennis and previous Angel Studios games. Agent helped them develop RDR because it was their current development and it allowed them to integrate things into RDR, but they would have done it anyway I feel. What it explains is the reason why RDR's version of RAGE is so different from anything else, it's just a bizarre morph of some stuff RAGE has currently and old Angel Studios stuff. GTA IV released before RDR but its RAGE version has the same structure as the ones we know, used in Max Payne 3, GTA V, etc.

Unfortunately I can't find the post anymore, but someone in NeoGAF a few years ago who apparently was an old R* dev mentioned GTA SA was gonna have a military expansion to it but it was totally cut. Don't quote me on it of course, but it's not that unbelievable.

I mean the DYOM mod was made off the coding for mission packs that rockstar thought they were gonna use but never did iirc so that isn’t too far out of a theory.

 

i just don’t think Agent had anything to do with San Andreas. Wouldn’t Agent have been in the barely preplanning stages, if not just an idea in someone’s head, by the time San Andreas was being worked on?

Sorry that I’m rather late to the party but I am very happy that Agent isn’t coming out! I mean, R* already has a crime game series called GTA. I honestly don’t like it when espionage-focused and organized crime-focused stuff is made by the same people. I just say, pick one or the other.

I'm sorry but that's kinda dumb. Variety is good. If they made the same kinda games over and over it'd get old fast.

 

That's why games like Max Payne, LA Noire, and Bully stand out.
