Agent (cancelled)

They've renewed the trademark a few times but they've officially released literally nothing. Pretty much all we have is leaks from CV's and some left over stuff in the game files from other Rockstar games.

I hate to burst your guys’ bubbles but Agent will never come out, so it’s no use even waiting. It’s been “coming soon” since freaking 2009! It’s basically the R* equivalent to this game on a website called Fun Brain called Croc Hopper, which was supposed to be released all the way back in 2005 but is STILL not out. In both cases, I’m not sure if Rockstar and Fun Brain are just putting those out there solely to mess with gamers or what. All I know is that both games, unfortunately, will never come out. Trust me, video games don’t take THAT long to make.

Back when Sony was still using the Sam Raimi Spiderman font for the PS3. And this is what the website looks like to this day.

I'm not even excited for Agent anyway because apparently, even though it's never coming out, is only gonna be for Playstation 3 and I only play Xbox consoles. However, I don't really care for Halo so I basically just play Microsoft's consoles as opposed to the actual games they put out. That's just how I roll. 😛

I wouldn't be that excited for Agent, either. I could have sworn that I read somewhere (might have been in one of the beta threads) that GTA SA and I think even V actually reused various assets from Agent and even some of the missions are loosely based on what they had in mind for Agent. So we may have played it already. Don't quote me on that, but honestly, it makes sense given the amount of missions revolved around government agencies in V. Rockstar couldn't make their own government agent game so they just reuse elements in GTA.

Agent elements appeared in RDR and MP3 mostly. RDR had files from the original San Diego project, with mission names and references to weapons; Max Payne 3 had actual files for Agent with map paths and stuff, but nothing too conclusive, just interesting.

It all makes sense now. The Hobo was the main protagonist in Agent it explains where he learns all his fighting moves. He also probably got fired from his agency but still knew some secrets and that's why he needed the transistors!

If Agent was vaporware R* would have silently removed the webpage during some ”graphical overhaul”.

 

I’m 100% certain they’re working on it in some capacity. I believe these past years they’ve put it on hold a bit while making RDR2, but as far as mechanics and graphics engines go, I believe they use what they learn from making RDR2, and keep the good stuff for future projects.

 

RDR2 has taken 8 years to develop, and from what I’ve gathered Agent is a game that R* has long been very interested in making. So they’re probably aiming for a huge scale with amazing detail and loads and loads of new gameplay elements. Since they haven’t released any prequel to it and the fans know nothing, they can take their sweet time. No rush, no one is clamoring ”You HAVE to give it to us!” because no one knows what it is or what to expect.

 

I think R* is still working on it, and I think it’ll be a new benchmark in the open world action genre. I think it’ll blow us away.

 

Oh, and also; someone asked whether we’ve had any info since they extended the trademark in 2013. I’m sure I saw some screens, concept art that is, showing snowy mountainous Alp regions of Austria, not very long ago. Portraying a downed jet among other things.

I don't know if this is Agent related or not, but information in this article could mean that the concept for Agent isn't entirely dead. I remember reading more articles about this but I haven't been able to find them again.

This article mentions that one of the concepts Hanger 13 worked on to some extent was a cold war era espionage game. As Hanger 13 and 2k are related to Take-Two ,who also own Rockstar, I wonder if this had anything to do with Agent? It isn't the same concept that we have seen here however that concept is years old and may have changed over time.

 

If it isn't Agent, I think it likely confirms that agent is dead. I don't see Take-Two allowing one studio to work on a cold war era spy games while another studio works on a different game with the same idea behind it, unless one was cancelled or they are actually the same game.

Yep, sorry but this game is dead in the water as far as I'm concerned. I'd be VERY surprised to see something about it come out in the next decade. Somewhere along the line I think R* North just felt it wasn't coming together and said "f*ck it" before moving onto GTA V.

I'd be very surprised if this game actually did see the light of day and actually managed to get a release date. But like I've said previously, so many resources, assets and ideas have been reused from Agent for other titles that the game was basically stripped down and those parts were added to other titles. If they did actually release something called "Agent," it'd be a totally different game than what Rockstar might have had in mind 10 years ago.

 

As for the website still being up, I think that if they were serious about this project, they'd at least remove the f*cking PS3 logo. I think it's only up because they probably figure almost nobody cares either which way about Agent now, so they're just not gonna bother with wasting any time doing anything to the website. Plus, them extending the trademark is probably just so that nobody steals an idea that they may have had at one point. Even if a game is unreleased, they'd rather not have someone else take the idea or name and make it their own and profit off of that.

From the very little things we knew about Agent, I still hope Agent (or an internal spiritual successor to Agent) sees the light of day. Espionage game set during the Cold War has my interest.

What ever development Agent saw a decade ago probably won't ever see the light of day, but I do hope Rockstar releases some Espionage game.

I hope the abandonment of the trademark doesn’t signal the end of the game as a whole. Agent sounded like an interesting concept to me. I’d love to see Rockstar have a take on espionage and counter-intelligence, and given it was made by a British studio (Rockstar North) I imagine some inspiration could’ve came from a staff member having a James Bond marathon.

Well then, I guess that settles everything. 9 years after its announcement, Agent is officially dead. Unless work is still being conducted and they've decided to rename the project, which I doubt. The game was in development for much longer than people realize, and it started out as a PS2 game before eventually becoming a PS3 title. I really wonder what was up with the development of the game. Part of me wonders if Rockstar wasn't even sure of what direction to take the game in. That and the fact that other major projects and sequels took precedence over a brand new IP, and they probably had little time to do anything with Agent.

Well it's safe to assume the original PS2 version at Rockstar North just wasn't working, even as they transferred it to Rockstar San Diego to be an Xbox game instead, before it was sent back to Rockstar North and rebooted to become the "PS3 Exclusive" before getting shelved again in 2011 when all studios were starting to focus full time on GTAV. It's just been one of those games they just couldn't nail on what they wanted to be it seems.

It's interesting looking back at what little concept art and development screenshots we even have of the game (and I'm amazed that the prototype/development screens even leaked). The earliest one from the PS2 era was just a single city block that looked kind-of run down. Then we saw some sort of Egypt/North Africa looking building, and another setting that looked Medeterranian. Then the concept art looked like it was set in the Alps. While you could say that the game might have just had multiple settings and locations, didn't the Agent files discovered on the Max Payne 3 disc seem to indicate that the game was set mostly in a snowy environment? If that's the case, maybe it did go through several complete re-dos before they just said "f*ck it" and stopped working on it.
