ScratchCard
The everlasting discussion, Fun vs. Realism, SA vs. IV, Jetpacks vs. Friends. Discuss it all here. What would you prefer for the next GTA game? Why don't you want realism? Why do you have so much trouble with dual shooting added in the game? Personally, I prefer the fun way. I've spent way more time with SA then I did with IV. There was just so much to explore, so much to do, flying planes between the SF skyscrapers, buying property... Just look at CTW. It kind of pretends to be realistic, but in the end, it's just a over the top crimegame. No friends but dealers, no helitours but tanks. And guess what? It's fun. Enjoy. ObsydianRaven
Well I think they should balance both the fun and realism in the next GTA. Now if R* wants to include a tank or jet pack then they better find a way to play it into the story.
El Zilcho
Chinatown Wars seems to have struck a balance. A good story, (if it was as good as Niko's, then we'd have gold) and the gameplay features of side missions, safehouses, plenty of stuff to do. This should be high on the agenda for V, a similar balance is needed. With any luck, they'll answer. U R B A N I T A S
Flesh-n-Bone
I prefer fun all the way. GTA IV has so much taken out from what we would want in a GTA game and has left us with few choices. No side missions, few weapons, less things to do... the game gets boring once you finish the storyline or heck... 100%. IV has, like, 15 weapons in total while all the previous games (bar III) had at least 32 weapons if I remember correctly.

CTW story is funny, IV story is serious. And indeed, CTW has balanced it. Like I said, pretends to be realistic but isn't at all.
Pr0xy_fl00d3r
Why do people get this impression that realism isn't fun? also, since when has any GTA game been realistic? GTA IV wasn't realistic at all, running around with an M4 in the middle of a busy city, waving rocket launchers about and and crashing cars isn't realistic... I'm sick of this argument, GTA IV had elements of realism, it was a fun game, San Andreas had more mini games and very very unrealistic elements, it was a fun game. Will people stop bashing GTA IV because of its realism & will people stop bashing SA due to its unrealistic features, they are both very good games in their own unique ways. There is no single winner of the argument "Which is better" as they both deliver greatness in different ways.

I think SA and IV are equal and also, I think that the realism in IV made it fun and that it was just test to see how realism would effect a GTA game, and IMO it was sucessful but I do think that Rockstar won't add anymore realism in the next GTA and will try to add more fun. Enjoii
I don't think that it is, or should be, one or the other. Too much of either one is going to create a problem, so instead, a decent balance has to be made. Personally, I preferred IV to SA. I preferred the level of realism that it offered, it wasn't too much but it felt a lot better than SA ever did.
DannyJC13
I love the ragdoll in IV and TLAD, so in TBOGT I think there should be a multiplayer mini game where you get fired off a catapult across the city (Alderney to Dukes) and the winner is whoever gets fired the farthest. You can set how fast and what direction you can go in too. Bonus points for causing damage and being hurt even more. AND IT ISN'T LIKE THE SWINGSET OF DOOM!!!! This idea is probably the stupidest yet.... Could be a mod, though???
nerner
A balance needs to be reached, I loved SA, but I would draw the line at spraying sh*t on random peds a la saints row 2.
Sanjeem
Good topic Scratch-card We need a bit of both, Not just realism over-kill, Nor No realism at all. The realism at the moment is good and i like it, i want a few more features though in the NeXt GTA game. I think that in the future on a low wanted level you should be able to bribe cops
ScratchCard
Yeah SR2 was too much 3 year old fun. SA was awesome, and so was IV until it got boring. A balance has to be made, like said, then we'll have another awesome GTA game. What about this: -Ragdoll physics -GTA IV graphics -A huge state like SA - towns, city's, rural areas, deserts, sea... -A serious story -Many, many side missions - fun sidemissions -More than 50 weapons -CTW wanted level system Etc. The best of what we've had before.
Dragonex100
Another thing is, people tend to forget that GTAIV has multiplayer, which is not striving for realism. SA didn't have any multiplayer, which make IV the upper hand to it. And if you say SA has multiplayer for the PC I will stab you in the jaw! Jokes. Algonquin Assassin
To be honest I find realism can be fun, and I think GTA IV struck a pretty good balance. Some people make out as if GTA IV is super realistic when it really isn't. It has realistic elements, but it's not really over the top realism. Also SA had some realistic elements too like CJ having to eat, getting haircuts, tattoos, working out etc. I think the next GTA should be a mix of SA, GTA IV, and CTW. I just hope R* don't go down the Saints Row path, and start adding ridiculous, and childish features like spraying sh*t from a septic truck. SA was pretty crazy at times, but it still had some dignity, and didn't feel like it was made by a 10 year old. In saying that I don't want R* to crank up the realism where you have to pay bills, piss, sh*t, walk your dog, get married etc. The sad thing is there were some people who wanted such things to be in GTA IV. Tony Mozzarelli 80
Yeah i don't think the two are mutually exclusive. I think they could have made IV a lot more fun by adding more realistic features. he problem was not the realism, just the lack of stuff to keep me occupied. The best of what we've had before. I'd go along with that, but I don't know of the wanted system (never played or seen CTW), and all of the stories are serious, but IV was just too depressing for my liking. I mean, San An was about taking over the hood whilst avenging his Mother and Brothers deaths, Vice City - Take over the drug world Montana style, culminating in avenging 2 major double cross/back stabs. But there was plenty of humor in both SA and VC, and whilst there was some in IV, just not enough IMO - the whole "Roman's mom was raped and murdered" thing was just a bit too dark for me. I would like more fun and less realism, definately more towards the San An style, than IV. For me, the only way to better San An, would be San An next Gen. I know it probably wont be in San Andreas, but please, no more Liberty City. Oh, and I've never played Saints row, but it just sounds awful to me. Algonquin Assassin
Oh, and I've never played Saints row, but it just sounds awful to me. It's not that bad, but if you think of SA that was given to a bunch of primary school children to make, that's basically Saints Row. To be honest, I can't remember, I was looking for san an wallpapers for my ps3 (I wanted a birds eye view of the grove) and a website had these post cards - I got 6 of them, I'll host them up for you - I just photo-shopped my name on it and brightened them up a bit. dkznr3
OT: That's the problem with IV. It pretends to be realistic, which is why it threw tanks and everything overboard. It's not realistic, and it lacks some fun. Agree. And FFS can we get to hold more than 8 rockets at a time? I never got into all the side missions and mini games in III, VC, and SA but I could always have fun by putting in the weapons cheat 10 or more times and just going buckwild with the rocket launcher. And I miss being able to kill peds and not receive a f*cking wanted level a whole 60 seconds after the kill because one decided to dial 911. Running also needs to be made default again (and faster) and I would hope by the time the next game comes, movement is more fluid. I've been killed or almost killed by cops/other players in MP from Run. Jump on wall. Stop. Pull up. Stop. One step. Two step. Run. Another thing, considering how serious IV takes itself, the talk radio stations did not make any sense. The judge show, Richard Bastion, and that psychic really don't mesh with the overall feeling of this game. I know that's really random and probably the only opinion I have that I've yet to read anyone else state themselves here or other GTA boards. FelipeVinhao
Although Rockstar mentioned GTA4 would be more "realistic", let's be sincere that it's not. 1. How the heck you commit a crime that puts a "6 star" wanted level on your head, and police simply stop searching after you abandon the "search area"? With a crime like this, they would look for you in hell until they kill you and them arrest you (no, I switched the order intentionally). 2. Although police sucks in Liberty City, the health care system is awesome. They save anyone who has been headshot, fell out of a building, or was burnt on a vehicle explosion (unless they were supposed / ordered to be killed). 3. The subway is always free. I doesn't matter if it's or it's not rush hour, you'll always find a seat. 4. You can carry a pool cue, a handgun, a SMG, a shotgun, a heavy weapon, a rocket launcher, and even some grenades, all under your jacket. And if you want to enter a secure place, you just need to hide your weapons and you're ok to enter. 5. You can eat anything, it will cure anything, from broken bones to gun shots. As a bonus, you don't even need to change clothes, as they're fixed and cleaned (laundromats are used only to wash money anyway). 6. Had your car stolen? Forgetaboutit. How you're supposed to ask it back? License plates? At least they'll know it's from Liberty City. Car color? Well, at least this reduces the search for a sh*tload of other similar cars. And pray the car wasn't repainted... See? GTA is still fun. Except the ironic real life = game I wrote, the fact is that they removed what wasn't really fun on previous game - I'm looking at you, Paramedic missions... K^2
I like the added realism as far as vehicle physics goes, because I think these are most fun when realistic. For everything else, I vote fun first. GTA IV isn't trying to be 100% realistic. It has realistic elements, but you can still do things that you wouldn't do in real life. After all if R* made it 100% realistic it would be pointless. People might complain that the realism takes away the fun, but R*could've went even further and added things like getting traffic tickets for speeding, running through redlights, DUIs, not being able to walk around with weapons, without attracting cops, having to pay bills, needing to take a piss every few hours in game etc. GTA IV's realism is really nothing compared to what R* COULD'VE done if they wanted to.
