Wolverine.
Mine bit the dust about a month ago. But instead of just sending the bad boy in to Microsoft, I did the towel trick and it was working up until now. Thing is, I'm going to try again and get the most out of it (hopefully until April) because I don't want to miss out on the MW2 map pack coming out in 11 days. If there's no luck of me getting it resurrected then, I'm f*cked. =[
That_Guy28
I am probably going to buy a PS3 in August. Microsoft sucks worse than ever this year. Not having a Blu Ray player in the Xbox 360 sucks. When Final Fantasy XIII came out, they couldn't fit it on a single DVD so they crammed it into 3 DVDs. I bet Final Fantasy XIII totaly sucks on Xbox 360. Wolverine.
Well I just found out my xbox is out of warranty. This is just great. Now I have to dish out $300 bucks for a new Elite.

Wolverine.
I want to get the Xbox 360 Elite Spring Bundle that was recently released that includes ODST and Forza 3. For $300 bucks, it's a steal.

If your 360 is out of warranty so it doesn't matter anyway, try the towel trick! It's worth a try! I'm sick of f*cking around with mine. I think you should buy a PS3. They are great except for not having Halo. I made a custom intercooler for my 360. It doesn't get over 80 degrees F. I still don't want to turn it on though. foohy
I think you should buy a PS3. They are great except for not having Halo. Not to offend any fans, but why is Halo considered to be such a great game? The first game did a lot to popularize the FPS genre but the next two don't seem to have innovated very much. They both just feel like Halo with updated graphics.
Reconite
I think you should buy a PS3. They are great except for not having Halo. Inb4 flamewar. Even though IMHO it's quite true, not many exclusives stand out as much as Gears of War or Halo on the Xbox 360.
Breaking Bohan
I had a PS3 for just over a year before it stopped reading any disks. This machine still works fine, it powers up and everything and you can still scroll through the menu etc, but the damn thing won't play any discs. It is just out of warranty - of course - and they say it will be $150 to ship it off and get it fixed. Has anyone sent their PS3 back or had this problem? Is it possible to replace the laser or something myself? I'm a bit worried to keep shelling out money if it is just going to break again. I purchased a PS3 primarily b/c I wanted a reliable quality machine ... but I got neither.

I purchased a PS3 primarily b/c I wanted a reliable quality machine ... but I got neither. My old PS3 actually had a problem where the Blu-Ray drive had a working laser, but the motor that would take the disc in and out malfunctioned, and I couldn't use it anymore. So I ended up buying a Blu-Ray drive off of ebay that had a broken laser, taking the good laser from my drive, and swapping it out. Anyway, you CAN replace the laser yourself if you're careful and patient. I was only 13 at the time and did it. Here's the instructions: http://playstationlifestyle.net/forums/sho...ead.php?p=28129 You could always send it to Sony, but: - You spend more - You'll likely lose your saves and data
Breaking Bohan
@Mike752 Thanks for the info, and I will have to look into that although I don't consider myself that technically gifted, I may just give it a shot. My machine will still take discs in and then eject them, but it won't read them or recognize the discs so I assume the laser must be bad. Do you order your parts through a shop on ebay or was it just from some random person? I'd kinda be worried about buying some junk that wouldn't fit/work or just of getting scammed. I didn't realize that these machines (xbox and ps3) both seem to have so many serious catastrophic problems.

Search for: KES-400AAA I think that's the laser you need. Good luck! EDIT: Just remember, if you mess up, then that's it. Sony won't fix it because you tampered with it. Make sure you have some time and patience to do it carefully and thoroughly.
Chorup
Last week i gave Gilksy's guide to fixing the YLOD a shot. I didn't really get my hopes up high and thought it's worth the shot since I've now got a new ps3 and the warranty is expired. It was pretty easy to do but i had a bit of trouble putting the case back together. When i originally put the cover back on it seemed as if there were two red lights and when i pressed the on button nothing happened, so i thought oh well at least i had a go at it. I realized there isn't two red lights so i pressed the metal thing under the case to turn it on and IT WORKED! I was able to backup all my previous data and transfer it to the new ps3, and now i have 2 Although it seems to be working fine, i still haven't had a go at putting the case on properly and i also have about 8 spare screws where i have no idea where they go but who cares, the bloody thing works now. I don't really expect it to last long into the future, but it was satisfying seeing that green light stay on. Sony ain't getting 250 bucks off me. YLOD is such a common issue and yet Sony offers no support whatsoever.
macorules94
Lol Chorup. I was gonna try to open the case of mine when it broke, but the screw shape was retarded and I couldn't find a damn screw that fits that shape. Anyways, when Sony fixed mine, and they gave it back, the left USB port was screwed so it doesn't work. Bloody rubbish

Chorup
Piperka, some of the screws are a real bitch to get out, i had about 10 screw drivers on stand by. I thought Sony was better than the others but they too are just a business in it only for the money. That sucks though, did you complain to them? If anyone tries this though trust me, keep all your parts in order and label them if you must. I just put screws back wherever they fitted which probably isn't the best idea
mike752
Chorup, did you look at the videos on youtube on how to put it back together? It was very simple for me. If only it worked longer than two months. Piperka, for the screw at the beginning, use a small flat-head screwdriver. It worked for me.
Chorup
At the time i fixed it my internet was capped and I only managed to download parts 2-5 of Gilksy's guide. He was also using a different model so i had to improvise a bit, but i'll be sure to check out other youtube videos when i have the time.
Dag26
I got RRoD a few times, i just kept fixing using the towel trick until it stopped working. I got it fixed until it happened again. I ended up buying the new one. (I think its called like a Japer model or something). Worked ever since

Garfield 2
40GB PS3 getting very noisy here (As much as my 60GB did before YLoD). Warranty seal, here I come! Going to replace the thermal paste tomorrow probably.
TommyMufc-Champs
My cousins friend has had a 60GB PS3 for years but last week It got the YLOD. So he contacted Sony and they said they will fix It for about £80. I was lucky when I got the YLOD because Sony gave me a brand new Console! Anyway my cousins friend was so pissed off with Sony he and my cousin smashed the PS3 with hammers (but my cousin was pissed off because his Resident Evil 5 was inside the PS3) He took a picture and emailed Sony about how pissed off he was. macorules94
You can easily take out the disc. Just turn it off from the back, hold your finger on the Eject button, then turn it on from the back, then the fan goes really loud (fan test) and the disc ejects. That doesn't work on any model made before the original 40GB model. I tried that on my launch 60GB to no avail. I had to open up the drive myself. Midnightz
Hate to bump but I'm twice over... 1st. - XBOX 360 Elite = RROD (last summer) 2nd. - XBOX 360 Original = RROD (today) Plus... coasting problem on R joystick That is the LAST time I buy a fricken console. *hugs and caresses gaming PC* Edited June 6, 2014 by Midnightz
RyanBurnsRed
Like I said a few days ago in another thread, my 2007 backwards compatible 80GB PS3 went to YLOD heaven. Had to open it and take apart the bluray drive to get the game I left in it when it died. Years and years of data gone...I'm also done with consoles. At least my 11 year old PS2 still works. GroundZero
So, my best friend's PS3 died from YLOD today... is there a quick way to ressurect it? Edited September 15, 2014 by GroundZero
Frontzie
My 250GB Xbox 360 S RDOD'ed (Red Dot of Death) a few weeks ago, took it apart and replaced the heatsink because it was getting a bit too warm. A bit of Arctic Silver 5, and job done! No more £180 foot warmer.
