Missing 'fun' in GTA IV

Sorry if it's the wrong section.

You know what I really miss in GTA IV? Some unrealism. Some funny things that were in the previous games, but are left out in this one.

I'm talking about jetpacks, F16's, Tanks, deserts, hills, ....

I just wanna have fun, I wanna fly with a jetpack on a building and just demolish everyone that comes across. I wanna have dogfights online with F16's, not with the helicopters, that just feels different. It doesn't have the same presence like a F16.

I want to just drive in a big pile of vehicles with my tank, seeing what's going to happen.

Why can I only hold 25 grenades? Why can I only hold 8 Rockets? Why can I only hold 50 bullets in the sniper?

Why are the bikes so f*cked up to drive?

Why is it that when you drive in reverse with a car, and you turn, your car just makes a 180 immediately?

First thing I thought when I heard GTA IV was going to be in New York was "city, city, city and central park"

No desert, no mountains to rally and have fun in....

GTA SA had a desert to rally in, had mountains to jump in, had a big airstrip, just for you.

That's what makes GTA SA so much better then GTA IV IMHO. Just the fun factor, the unrealism.

You know what I did in GTA SA? I jumped on car, shoot at the roof and hoped the driver would go crazy and started racing. That way I could stand on the car and just shoot everyone. Great fun, a bit like a drive/standy-by smile.gif

Yesterday I tried that with GTA IV, you know what happened? The car started moving and 1 sec later the physics of the game made me fall of the car.

See what I mean? A great part of GTA SA, is ruined by the realism of GTA IV.

Who doesn't love the F16 in GTA SA? They were not perfect, but the speed of them was just amazing and was one of the most fun parts of the whole game.

Now we have the helicopters with the broken guns, I've flown with them for some time, but it's very hard to actually kill someone with the guns....

I loved the 'RPG' parameters in GTA SA, loved going to the Gym and just see my character getting more in shape everytime.

Loved the customization part, the tattoo's, haircut, clothing, .....

All gone in GTA IV. Sure there are clothing shops, but way too less. Only one good is Perseus.

But why no tattoo's or at least haircuts?

I'm not saying GTA IV is a bad game, it definitely has several improvements on GTA SA. Superb graphics, great physics, sound is also top-notch, good story, big world, funny personages, great interface, online multiplayer, video editor, ....

But there are some flaws in them for me and probably for other people too. The physics should be toned down like for the example of me standing on a car.

Also, I love crashing and seeing how Niko just flies away and bumps into a bridge. I would do that over and over again, just to have a laugh. But I can't, because he always dies. (Is there a cheat that makes him invulnerable?)

It's logical that he dies, and I don't want to make him invincible, but why not tone it down just a little bit?

And the bikes in the game absolutely suck, all the fun is gone with them!

Thanks for reading my rant, and hopefully it helps.

This has been answered countless times, and nobody but San Andreas fan boys seem to care, IV was brilliant, It has never been boring or "less fun" for me, its brilliant, I love it just like I love all of the other GTA titles, including SA, you have to learn that IV is a new generation of GTA, R* wont go back to creating a game full of irrelevant things such as Jet packs and go karts, seriously, could you imagine some nutter from Serbia driving around in them little toy cars or a Jet pack? I couldn't.

If oyu dont like IV and cannot appreciate its sheer brilliance then stop complaining and play San Andreas, it is as simple as that.

I really agree. All the fun I had when playing VC, SA, LCS and VCS (and III to some extent) were all removed and ruined on IV. I loved speeding on a bike up to a ramp and flying then jump off mid-air.

It was a sad loss, but IV and SA are both great in their own ways.

In my view, IV was just "testing the water", like III was. Maybe they will readd some features in GTA: NeXt.

I agree with you about IV is "testing the water". It was the first ever GTA game on the 360/PS3, with a new game engine, and I think it was a great game, but the next one will be far better, as R* will have had time to work out what was good/bad in the game and make it better for next time. They will tweak the game engine and make overall gameplay better than IV.

I wouldn't say there would be much change in graphics in the next game though.

I have no idea how anyone can think that Hydras are F16s, but other than that little inconsistency, I agree with Satangel. Realism is good, but it shouldn't get in the way of fun. Because, you know, that's the point of games. If realism helps to reach that end, great. If it gets in the way, off it goes.

On that note, if you haven't tried Saints Row 2, do so. It is a shameless SA clone, and not the most carefully made game ever, but if you get over that, it is actually quite a lot of fun.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Ah yes, it were Hydras, sorry, didn't know the name anymore....

Is Saints Row 2 good on the PC? I was looking forward to it, it seemed like a really good GTA SA clone, but the reviews said it was a very sloppy and bad port.

@Pr0xy_fl00d3r, each their own opinion of course, but I think some little things like the amount of bullets/ammo you can hold are very annoying.

No I can't imagine that, but I couldn't do that with CJ too, but I loved flying the jetpack lol.gif

@ General Goose and Superb, lets's hope you guys are right and that they tweak the game a bit, to get even more fun out of them.

One of my only gripes over IV was the lack of interiors. Not that every building should be accessible, but the buildings that were already there and inaccessible. Why couldn't I enter Comrades Bar and fight with some Russians? Why couldn't I enter the AOD clubhouse in TLAD? Johnny is in The Lost, and I wouldn't be going there with the intention of having a friendly drink, but for a brutal shootout. What about Drusilla's? Why couldn't I enter that, and be approached by the Doorman who has the intention of offering me a beautiful bacala salad, only to be head butted, in which case a horde of hungry Mafia goons should want to fight me. The Linen Lounge, the Topless Bar behind the Homebrew Cafe, Bahama Mama's, the Pillows Club, I could go on and on.

That is one of my few gripes too, it is a complete annoyance how you cant enter places like The Majestic hotel after Late checkout, The bank of Liberty after Three leaf Clover, Goldbergs office after ...Final interview, in TLAD that pissed me off, wouldn't it be fun to take Terry & Clay to the club house to cause some havoc? that would be gold.

Ugh look R* didn't have time to add extra crap that didn't help the story ( like planes and jet packs) Get over it. Crap like that will be in the next GTA just wait.

I sure hope so.

I really hope R* reads these kinda things, and that they perfect the engine.

When would the next GTA come out? Around 2011?

The lack of interiors is my main gripe. If there's one thing I love to do - it's explore. And in a place the size of Liberty City I feel COMPELLED to explore but wait... what the sh*t is there to actually explore besides a few empty, run down apartment complex's, a few empty warehouses and a couple of housing projects? Gee Rockstar, at least give us something decent to explore. Like a few houses, random doors here and there (subway, on the beaches, etc). I do hold out hope though that once R* are done with DLC2 that they'll begin releasing patches/updates here and there adding little bits and bobs to the game. For example: interiors. For example: more vehicles in free mode. For example: the new vehicles and weapons in TLAD free mode. Etc etc... Just stuff like that. The interiors/weapons/vehicles are ALREADY there so what the hell is stopping R* from adding them to the game properly? My hopes are naive, I know, but a man can dream. A man can dream sad.gif

Not gonna happen. Not for free atleast, but probarly not at all.

Well, you know. To be completely honest. I'd quite happily line their shyster pockets if it meant that I'd have a bit more to play about with.

Okay, thanks for mentioning that.

So probably around 2011 for the PC version, although I really hope they do a simultanous release now.

It is sloppy, but after about 15 minutes of playing it, you stop noticing most of it. Mostly, it's the steering on vehicles that is botched. If you can manage to hook up a game pad to your PC, it is infinitely better. You'll also run into some clipping and collision issues, but it's nothing major.

Basically, the port is bad, but there is so much to do, that after a while, you completely forget about the problems you have. And that really should say something.

Overall, I really think it's worth the money.

As cliche as it sounds, I agree. Look I think SA is a great game, but IV is brilliant in its own way.

Infact I play it more than any other GTA. I've had a save on SA that's been going since last August, and I'm nearly halfway through it now. I started a GTA IV save a couple of months ago, and hit the halfway mark a few days ago. Go figure. IMO GTA IV is a better game than SA. SA might have more features, but I feel IV is my type of game.

At the end of the day though the only feature from SA I actually give two sh*ts about is the car customizing. That would've been golden in IV, and IMO R* f*cked up by not expanding on it, but I can still function fine without it.. The rest are sort of... meh to me.

The only real things that I cared about in SA that I feel should hve been put into IV were: The parachute, the Planes, and the customization of cars, although some of those things may not have fitted with Niko's story and personality, they would definitely have fitted with Johnny's from what I have read. I hope they at least bring back the base jumping function for the next GTA.

I agree on the fun aspect.

IV has the best realism, graphics and storyline. (can't say I like the physics engine though, it's very experimental)

SA has the best gameplay, gang system feel of power, character and vehicle customization

Vice City has the best soundtrack

VCS has the best economy

LCS has the best side missions

III has the best revolutionary feel to the game industry & most GTA style soundtrack.

I really like them all though to be honest.

When I first played GTAIII (my first gta experience) many things went through my mind. First things first I was amazed you could just grab any car on the street. I felt like "this entire city is in this dude's hands." The sandbox gameplay really impressed me the most. I already knew this game was gonna be BIG, much bigger than the previous GTA titles I had only touched a few times, but didn't particularly like the graphics of. Actually, when I tried GTA2 a little bit before GTAIII, i was already thinking, boy if only the graphics were better this game could be really fun with the concept their poking at.

One of my ideas for a more perfect GTA would be one where most of the buildings were accessable. SA and IV took this concept a bit further (especially SA with the yellow marker). If the PS2 allowed Rockstar to engineer GTAIII into GTA:SA, perhaps the PS3 should also allow Rockstar to engineer GTAIV into a 4-5 times greater gameplay equivalent (GTA:SA equivalent of GTAIII in regards to the level of increased gameplay)

Damn it man. I apologise for the dumbass question but I was thinking the other day about all the 'closed' buildings and stuff like Funland and such, but that isn't really the point so I don't really need to go into detail about that. Anyway, there was one building I was thinking off that Rockstar had justified the closure of by saying that it was 'closed for renovations' or some sh*t. In the game, not from Rockstars mouth personally. Anyway, now I can't think what the hell this place was. Anybody wanna help me out?! It's doing my frigging nut in! :|

I think it was the Libertonian museum. I dunno whether it's accessible after the mission.

Funland is closed for safety reasons, as well.

No, you can only enter it once, during Three leaf clover. Although, there is a glitch which allows you to enter.
