I own GTA IV on Ps3 and I loved it the first two times I played it (doing opposite story choices). I then borrowed an Xbox 360 in order to play The Lost and Damned and GTA IV simultaneously and it was great. At first I was iffy with the Xbox look of it seeing how I was coming off the Ps3 but after I tweaked with the tv, Xbox and in-game settings, I got it to look perfect for me.

I've gotten my Ps3 back and returned the Xbox and the Ps3 version just isn't matching up to the Xbox version. The morning, daytime and sunset still look great but night time is ALL over the place. The shading around the dark corners like alleys or just even shadowy figures and if Niko is in a certain light it is just way too dark that you can't see any texture of detail on Niko's clothes or anything he may be leaning up against or something. If I try to put the brightness up either on the TV or the game the image becomes too stale and ugly and makes the night sky so gray at a time when it's suppose to be pitch black.

Is this how the Ps3 version is supposed to look? I love the Ps3 and I hate admitting that GTA IV looks better on Xbox but I think it does unless I can figure out away to fix it on Ps3. If anyone is an expert on this sort of thing any input would be greatly appreciated.

I own of 40 inch Sony Bravia, HDTV with Motion Flow and I'm using an HDMI cable for the Ps3's video output incase anyone's wondering. Thanks for anyone with input.

Have you tried messing in between the ingame brightness, contrast, and saturation all together? Usually you can make it look great if you put brightness on full, contrast most of the way or all, and saturation only a little bit or it becomes hard to read some text.

I have a PS3 and had to tweak it to get a bit more brightness in the game, but there are areas of the game that are very gloomy anyway (under some bridges etc.), and I have occasionally found it difficult to see where the hell Niko is going sometimes, but I have got used to it. cool.gif

Check out this video link... (watch in HD if you want)

Notice how at night, it LOOKS like night. One thing I loved about all GTA games was the realistic lighting sheme. I live 20 minutes away from Toronto which resembles New York in many ways which of course is the city Liberty City is based in and when I play a game like GTA IV in perfect contrast it feels authentic no matter what the weather or time of day is. In the video I've linked the sky is pitch black, the way a night sky should look and the textures on the ground whether it be Niko, cars, people, walls, signs, floor still maintain a bright, realistic lighting contrast.

However, off late when playing around at night time when I try to lower the brightness to make the sky black the foreground becomes too dark and of course when I brighten it up the sky becomes a washed out, ugly gray. I got it perfect on the XBox with both IV and TLAD but with the Ps3 it's really difficult. If I can fix what night time looks like, daytime, morning and sunset will look as superb as always.

This exactly happened to me, i resolved it by turning up the contrast to max on my tv and ingame settings, also since i have a lcd tv the blacks stay perfectly black

i've had GTA since the release last april for xbox. i recently bought a ps3 and picked up a cheap used copy of gta. i have the in-game settings the same for both games, however, the ps3 version is sooooo dark. i don't even want to play it. the only thing i haven't tried is messing around with some system settings in the ps3. maybe that would help. it's just weird that the two versions would look drastically different when the TV and start menu options are identical.

Same problem happened to me with Ps3 Version. Made me stop playing for a while because it became endlessly annoying.

But you have to play around with the settings, contrast, brightness and the other one(can't remember). After I did that it worked out great for me, that's when I really started to enjoy the game.

When I was playing at a friend's house, I was stunned at how much brighter (and cleaner) it showed, took a photo of the screen, went home and matched it on Ps3. Not that hard to do. Because I play on a CRT Tv, I just thought it showed bad.

In-game brightness is a useless control because it's actually tied to glow/corona and changing it from default is just wrong: you either make the sun and headlights laughably dim or else you make illuminated signs washed out and unreadable.

After a lot of experimenting I'm pretty sure Rockstar made all their screenshots with default graphics settings, except they had in-game contrast turned all the way up (look at any of their nighttime screenshots for proof). I encourage people to assume those settings are right and if it doesn't look good the problem is a combination of the console settings and TV settings.

With correct settings nowhere should be too dark to see, but also no detail should get washed out in the glare of headlights and streetlights. It can be difficult to find that sweet spot. The root problem is there are different "PC" and "TV" video levels (0-255 vs. 16-235), and consoles and TVs support both but have horrible interfaces that make it very hard to know if both devices are speaking the same language.
