ah sh*t. Hate to see it go out.

As much as I liked NCFOM, and the utter creepiness of Chigurh - it doesn't beat Taxi Driver in my books. The realism, brutality of the story, and the psychopathic vigilante that is Travis edges it by a huge margin for me.

It's funny, I was just about to change to a Taxi Driver avatar just now anyway, what an opportune time.

Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars, sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I'm God's Lonely man.

No Country for Old Men is another example of fantabulous film making, however, I simply can't deny the prodigious work of art that is Scorsese's Taxi Driver. One of my personal Top Ten favorites.

Travis Bickle is such an incredibly fascinating character. They do not make them like that any more.

Never really liked NCFOM much. It was one hell of a movie but Taxi Driver steals it for me.

In truth I haven't seen Taxi Driver in bloody years so it might not be such a fair vote. I just have better memories of watching it, whereas NCFOM not so much.

Taxi driver was an excellent film, but NCFOM is one of my favourite movies. Most movies today have fast paced scenes and high volume scores, NCFOM was a breath of fresh air. The almost toal lack of music and long pauses was so chilling, especially with Anton. Not to mention Tommy Lee Jones' finest role in recent times.

Shop owner - "[What do] I stand to win here?"

Anton - "Everything."

Enough said.

Haven't seen Taxi Driver yet, so nulled.

No Country is one of the few great films of this decade, and hate to see it eliminated in this round. Based on Taxi Driver's reputation, I guess it deserves to win this one.

"Thank God for the rain to wash the trash off the sidewalk. "

Travis Bickle is a far deeper character than anything in No Country For Old Men, though I hate to see either film go out.

Taxi Driver.

While I loved NCFOM, Taxi Driver is one of my personal favourites. Seeing Bickle slowly progress into madness, is a chilling experience.

NCFOM is a great film truly, but not as good as Taxi Driver, besides my favourite coen film is Fargo.

Ah what a bastard, I love them both.

Going to have to go for Taxi Driver though, I f*cking love Travis Bickle who's played so brilliantly by DeNiro. The subtle music in Taxi Driver beats the near silence of NCFOM.

Tough decision though, it's a shame to see NCFOM go out.

Listen you f*ckers, you screw-heads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the c*nts, the dogs, the filth, the sh*t. Here is someone who stood up.

I think that about covers it.

I can't really add much more than my compadres already have. I'll always love Taxi Driver, and Bickle will always be fascinating to watch.

Just because its a "classic" doesnt make it better. Im sure in 30 years people will look back on NCFOM as a classic, because its a f*cking amazing movie. Anton stands alongside Hannibal in terms of creepiness.

Ive never seen a more suspenseful film, every scene was shot perfectly, and the acting was spot on.

You missed out the best bit where he restarts, along with the shot. Goes like this.

Ha, these are two films that I really didn't 'get' at all. In both cases I couldn't really understand how they were so popular when not a lot really happened or was explained at all. So I null voted anyway.

I don't think that was anyone's justification.

You cant say it isnt playing a part though. I think Taxi driver is a brilliant movie, but it doesnt come close to NCFOM.

I disagree. I really like, 'No Country', I really do. I just think that Taxi Driver has more going for it. The subtext is much richer, and it left me feeling a lot more satisfied upon completion.

It was the difference between regular and vegetarian lasagne for me. Both great, but one has that little bit more to it.

@ Onepeice inlove.gif That is seriously one of my favourite scenes from any movie. The look on Anton's face after the shop owner calls the toss is so cold I actually felt scared. Villans don't come much better than that.

Definitely an amazing scene. The tension felt is something else entirely.

Travis Bickle is, honestly, one of the best (if not THE best) character in a movie. The entire movie is about his evolution from an antisocial psycho to a homicidal antisocial psycho, and the weird thing is you don't know whether to root for him or be disgusted by him. Or even both if that's possible. The movie itself is brilliant, jazz accompanying his inner monologues while he drives through seedy NY, the climax, it's all good.

No Country is great, don't get me wrong, but Taxi Driver just blew me away. My vote goes to the guy who takes a girl to a porno on their first date. icon14.gif

I don't really understand all the hype about Taxi Driver. It was OK, but in truth, I don't think I actaully liked it. There, I said it. And I just love NCFOM. The slow paced story, the characters, the way they made the film look like it was made in the 90's. And that gas station scene is amazing. One for the history books. And when they didn't show if he killed that woman in the end. Instead they showed Anton coming out of the house looking at his socks, or shoes. Whatever. But then you knew he killed her. But like always, older movies win in this contest. And yes, regardless of what anyone says, that is the real reason.

Nice one at spoiling the whole f*cking end for people who haven't seen it vanja.

But you say you liked the slow pace of NCFOM, that pace was in Taxi Driver and directed much better. It's not as if Taxi Driver was some action flick.

Also, you said:

the way they made the film look like it was made in the 90's

I don't understand. Do you mean the directed, quality of the film etc made to look 90's quality? Or you mean made to look like when it was set? NCFOM was set in 1980, not the 90's.

You didn't get either of these? Pity, you are missing out big time.

I loved NCFOM. Really did. But like Makeshyft said. The subtext is much richer. I feel Taxi Driver had a little more dimension to it.

Oh, and I didn't vote for it because it's a 'classic.' I tend to vote for films on their influence on other cinema and originality and generall stuff I learn from my film studies module.

Nah its not the best transformation in a movie, fight club definitely takes the take the cake for that. disenfranchisement to insanity so self realization, cant get much better than that.

Also about subtext, there was still alot of it in NCFOM, the transition from the 60s of "giving and sharing" to the 80s of just being selfish and materialistic, the film is set right in the middle of it.

Very insightful Scorsese essay^. I think the guy really pinned it on the head when he pointed out Scorsese's own admission that The Departed was his only movie with a real plot. That might be good for you to read Guglie.

As far as NCFOM... I loved the movie, but it doesn't compare and not because they're decades apart. I liked There Will Be Blood better, in spite of NCFOM being the less flawed film in my eyes. Blood was audacious and questionable, definitely flawed, but was infinitely more interesting than the homogenized brand of pitch-perfect crime thriller that was NCFOM. Everything about Country was stellar, but at the same time seemingly dialed in, a safe play.

On the other hand... Taxi Driver continues to amaze me in so many different ways. The subtle tones and gestures of Bickle and Scorsese's camera... just excellent.

-EDIT-

"But like always, older movies win in this contest. And yes, regardless of what anyone says, that is the real reason." - GTAvanja

You, sir, are misguided. Taxi Driver is just an amazing film to a lot of people, you don't see it and that's okay, but it is real I assure you.

Also, think of this, this makes much sense... maybe the reason older films win mostly is because there is something so great about them to allow them relevance 30 and 40 years down the road. Think about that. No one's really talking about King of New York here because that movie wasn't of Taxi Driver's caliber... if a film being decades old was the only criteria NCFOM wouldn't be in this competition.
