CyReNiUsX
Hey guys.... I was wondering what can I do to make my GTA IV run more smoothly.. And why does it run so poorly on Windows XP.. The only reason I am on Vista right now is because of GTA IV, it runs extremely better on vista. But when I play it on XP, it lags so much and is completely unplayable. Any ideas why it runs that way on XP, any work arounds? I would LOVE to go back to Windows XP if I can find a solution. I'm using ATI 9.5 drivers.. any help would be appreciated.. ohh and would I benefit from overlocking my processor to 3.0Ghz? My setup AMD Phenom II 920 2.8Ghz ASUS M4A79 Deluxe ATI 4870 1Gb OCZ DDR2 1066 4GB of RAM Creative X-Fi Titanium Western Digital Black Edition 500Gb ( always defrag after installing games/programs ) UPDATE: I'm having a new problem now.. whenever I play GTA IV for about 30 minutes to an hour it crashes saying my computer has run out of memory? It did the same thing for COD5 the other day. What gives? THIS BENCHMARK IS A LIE!!! At times I get around 30s, and 40s FPS, but most of the time its between 20s and 30s.. Is there any good command lines I can use? I run using -norestrictions -nomemrestrict Statistics Average FPS: 48.59 Duration: 37.19 sec CPU Usage: 71% System memory usage: 73% Video memory usage: 92% Graphics Settings Video Mode: 1920 x 1080 (60 Hz) Texture Quality: High Texture Filter Quality: Very High View Distance: 30 Detail Distance: 40 Hardware Microsoft® Windows Vista" Ultimate Service Pack 1 Video Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Video Driver version: 8.14.10.662 Audio Adapter: Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi) AMD Phenom II X4 920 Processor Edited May 24, 2009 by CyReNiUsX
Scorpus
What sort of frames are you getting? Anyway, your system should be more than enough to run Vista smoothly so I don't see why you want to go back to XP. Maybe even try out Windows 7. As for the overclocking it's worth a try but I don't think that it will bring that much of a difference going up by only 200 MHz. Maybe try overclocking it higher than 3 GHz
catzilla
It's 'upgrading to XP', actually. Not "going back".
Nillus
Why are you going AMD on this one, consider the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400? It's clocked at 3GHz by default and it should get to 4GHz easily with some good aftermarket cooling. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115037 I have one myself (see my signature) and I love it. ;D
anus
He already has bought the PC. That chip is a lot faster than the E8400 anyway. As for the OP, IV seems to run a lot better on vista than XP, it's a known thing, and runs even better on Windows 7. Definitely overclock your processor, but not just to 3GHz, aim higher. go as far as you can because the faster your CPU, the better IV plays. XP (even though I still use it) is EXTREMELY old and outdated. I agree that Vista isn't really a "step up" from XP. So the best thing to do is to download Windows 7 x64 and use it. It's pretty much Vista without the annoyances and is faster than XP. And when Windows 7 is released, buy it and use the full version .
Highwayman72
It probbly lags like a bitch on Xp because of to major reasons... 1. XP is 32bit and a old sh*tty OS (fanboys can deal with it cos they can't afford decent hardware clearly...lol) 2. Phenom is 64bit so using any 64bit OS will destroy XP in benchmarks and performance. You only flame because you love AMD so much. I deal with AMD and Intel every day through out my working days. We all know in our group that Intel smacks the socks off AMD and it's 100% true facts. What temperature would you get an AMD @ using AIR @ 3.8ghz? Perhaps closing into 70c idle? YES. Intel OMG it reaches 44c idle... You sir are such a fan boy LOL. Physicalfire
And Phenom IIs are faster than Core 2s and a bit slower than i7s. If you think otherwise, you're an idiot. A Phenom II even without overclocking is great for gaming, and they're really good overclockers too. They're great overclockers. They are faster than Core 2s and are only a bit slower than i7s. Phenom II being better than Core 2. Then you're obviously lying, how can you know anything like this without testing and proving your own point? I have access to Phenom II and extremes EVERY DAY! Please Sir you know f*ck all about computer hardware. OH LOOK AT ME I LIKE AMD BETTER ALTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER TOUCHED AN AMD AND IM NOT A FAN BOY JUST AMD IS BETTER, BECAUSE I NEVER TRIED ONE AND I AM USING INTEL BUT I WANT TO SAY AMD IS BETTER WITHOUT EVER USING AMD. OH MY DO I SOUND LIKE A TW*T?.

I did start it with professionalism, if you want you can read my posts and see the flame come onto me by the guy who just replied to me and Warlord. Them and 1 other guy attacked me and it was abuse and not a discussion. So now get back to discussing things in an intelligent manner or just don't bother. Why go for AMD when you can get a cheap Intel and overclock it higher than the AMD and save money? Why on earth would an AMD overclock better than an Intel really? How come every single review has said Intel is better at overclocking and performance? You will get one or two reviews stating different and if proof is in the pudding we'll all agree. I see no hard evidence that Phenom is anywhere near Core 2 or even i7... You may get a Phenom when spending £800 that may come close to i7 but when you get an i7 CPU for less than half the price, thats not very productive thinking... Still Phenom hangs behind Core 2's in benchmarks and realtime performance. You already know that. THEY SAID:WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PHENOM II, NOT PHENOM. GET YOUR F*CKING FACTS STRAIGHT. A Phenom II even without overclocking is great for gaming, and they're really good overclockers too, so the option for overclocking is there if needed. Calm down. We all know this flaming on the Internet is for very special people and like minded people like you. Phenom II is the same as Phenom apart from the architecture. Yes you may be able to overclock BUT how much more would you get out of the Phenom II clock wise?? You can CLEARLY see that AMD are lacking and have been lacking since the same time Nvidia started to fall behind ATI. I know you're the mod/admin around here but tbh it seems like I'm getting all the blame here for some reason. Take a closer look at the topic, my FIRST ever post was Why go for AMD when you can get a cheap Intel and overclock it higher than the AMD and save money? And back ontopic: You decided on any changes to your build mate?

TruXter
UPDATE: I'm having a new problem now.. whenever I play GTA IV for about 30 minutes to an hour it crashes saying my computer has run out of memory? It did the same thing for COD5 the other day. What gives? Ok, Start with the simple answers. how is your cooling, is there direct air on the north and the nicknamed south bridge Is there direct air on the memory. is the temperature of your processor nice and low while under stress From looking at the picture of your motherboard, the n/s bridges are set nice for cooling, as long as that isn't just two sided tape between the two. yes companies do that crap. feel the heatsinks and see if they are at least absorbing some of the temperature before dicipating . if that is the case, smack a fan on them... can't hurt unless you have a low p/s. I see 4 pci-e2/x16 slots why only one card ? is that 1066 memory the max your board can handle?. It looks like they are claiming that asus and some weird limitations leave you the choice of 1066 and 800. In my first guess that is an odd low for that board. I would check forums and see if people are using higher memory than that. I will bet my cat's treats that it will accept higher ram ( betting my cat's treats = a week of nagging from a spoiled cat) xp has a whole lot of memory dumps and is unstable for a board and processor as new as what you have. So I advice vista. no do not get the full blown premium black superduper edition, basic will be fine. find black viper's site on resource utilization. Windows 7 works almost as awesome as tiny vista ;-).. what is your cooling on your processor and your vid card, what is your method of cooling on the cpu, and what are the readings ? Do you have downloads going while you play? how many instant messengers? running some sort of media player in the back? networked pc's that you share with ? if you said yes to either one of those. Take a moment to re-think your next response, you might make the forums mad lol model number for your cpu ? ps: The mobo in question your board I have two purchased editions of vista that I do not use, one is prem one is basic. I just think tiny is the whale's tits
CyReNiUsX
No overheating that I'm aware of, and I'm very picky about that.. I have good airflow inside my case.. 2 120mm intake in the front, 2 120mm on the side one of them blowing towards the video card, 2 120mm exhaust on top, and 1 120mm in the back.. Stock heatsink fan for CPU.. I'm looking to crossfire soon, just dont have the funds for it right now.. i usually dont play any games with a bunch of programs open in the backround, just AIM, FRAPS, GPU-Z, and Core Temp.
