unknown_userid Posted May 21, 2009 Share Posted May 21, 2009 Hey everyone- this is something I've wondered about in most of the games of the series, but most of all with this one. How easy would it be for modders, or Rockstar for that matter, to alter Vigilante mode into something more substantive? A few missions- like the one where Roman is captured in a warehouse or Portrait of a Killer, allow Niko to call for backup in a police or FIB vehicle, leading to a cinematic pitched battle between the boys in blue and gangsters, with the former basically ignoring Niko as he fires from cover at the targets. This allows for a feeling of almost being on the 'good side' in the game, especially when firing a pistol from behind an unmarked car with blue and whites all over the place, lights flashing. Unfortunately, these options are disabled in Vigilante mode and are limited even out of vigilante mode. It's rare that calling for backup is effective since the police won't go everywhere and Niko sometimes attracts attention by accident when just trying to 'help' them out. It sort of makes sense, because GTA is very much against the law (uh, other than all the missions assigned BY authority figures in each game), but it got me thinking: how would it be to play like that more, especially with a few options? There are games on the PC that allow for crusing in a police car- I remember the Need For Speed series had a few good ones. There are other types of police games- Police Quest + the Swat series, in particular; but I think the GTA engine and setup would be well setup to combine the two, though I have no idea how much tweaking it would take. Some possible changes: 1) Set 'Niko' (or character) as friendly to police- therefore no wanted level for brandishing a firearm and shooting at hostiles 2) Allow for police backup to be called more easily, and at higher levels (i.e. maybe not just patrol cars) 3) possibly create or modify missions to set the mission targets as having their own wanted levels 4) Allow police to follow Niko The 'easiest' might be to implement (2) and (1) only in vigilante mode, rather than carrying it over onto other missions, unless getting into the realm of DLC- but them again, I don't know enough about the game mechanics to know if it's even possible. I've always thought Vigilante mode was woefully contradictory in the GTA games- it's someone in a police car, sometimes a police uniform (GTA:VC for example), chasing after criminals- the police should be helping, not trying to kill me! I think it would give a lot more depth and fun to the vigilante missions at least if there were some police helping, rather than hindering- even if they only act as redshirts and die quickly yelling about their wounds (would also be nice to have some sort of reaction to an officer down) Anyway, if such a mod or DLC never comes, guess I'll just have to replay some of the missions and try and lure some police to the scene to get shot at so they can decide to do this on their own...
