voteneg
I would like to see a DIY-How To forum added somewhere under the community section, something in the same spirit as the tutorials directory under GTA modding, but encompassing a wide variety of topics. I'd imagine it as a place for folks to post tutorials or request them ala the gfx request directory. I propose that certain how-to's be prohibited, such as explosives, hacking etc etc. Not that I presume you would need me to mod the section should someone decide to create it, I am nonetheless offering out of common courteousy. Girish
No, just no. Although topics on hacking and such can easily go in the Tech & PC Chat forum, I don't think such kind of discussion is going to be allowed on GTAF. The current set of community forums that we have already cover almost every single thing there is to cover. There's no need to branch them further. Not that I presume you would need me to mod the section should someone decide to create it, I am nonetheless offering out of common courteousy. Yeah, that's what they all say. So, basically, you want a whole new forum to be added just so you can moderate it. Wow!
Exkabewbikadid
I once thought it would be nice if there were some kind of moderated wiki to compliment the forums. Basically anyone who wanted to write a tutorial or whatever would submit it, and if it's worthwhile it would get "published". Likewise, I don't think a tutorial forum is a bad idea, but I'm not so sure these ideas would work too well for this community as it's very fragmented. If it had a tighter subject focus, then it might work, but we have members ranging from those who only post in GTA sections to those who haven't touched a GTA in years and that probably doesn't bode well for these ideas to work. voteneg
No, just no. The current set of community forums that we have already cover almost every single thing there is to cover. There's no need to branch them further. So, basically, you want a whole new forum to be added just so you can moderate it. Wow! I think you might have misread, I specifically suggested that such topics such as hacking be prohibited. As it stands now I do not agree that there is a place to post general tutorials or tut requests. Perhaps I offered to mod because after reading previous new sub-forum suggestions it seemed pretty customary, anyways, what kind of douche is gonna ask someone to create a new forum without offering to do some of the work involved with it. It's common decency really. I think I made it pretty clear that I seriously doubted I would even be considered. Would I like to mod, I certainly wouldn't mind it, especially if it's a topic I'm passionate about, but is it the end all be all for me? Certainly not. @xcommunicated. Thanks for the reply. There's not much one can do to make the forum members use a new sub-forum, but I feel there is a good core group of individuals who would use the area to post DIY-How To tutorials. I'd think if you look at the Web Design/Programming forum you'd get a great example of what such a sub-forum could be. A core group of posters who field novice questions, and then you have folks posting their own works and creating how-tos on various tasks. And once a decent library of tutorials starts getting built out I'd think it might start to draw more traffic. As for tightening up the focus, I think it's less about dictating the sort of topics we hit, but rather dictating the format in which they're presented. I think maintaining a strict submission/request setup would do well for a forum of this nature. I'd like people to know that they could go to this forum, pose a "how do I do this?" question and have someone give them some insights on how they might go about accomplishing it. People would also know they could share their works there... so long as they also share the knowledge and know so others may do it themselves as well. All in all I think having all sorts of diy tutorials from the zany to the serious would be all right. Edited May 21, 2009 by voteneg
fred
There are plenty of dedicated 'how to' sites and I don't see any sense in us trying to provide a similar service. This is a forum for GTA, not a one-stop shop for all your internet needs. 'How to' questions go in the appropriate forum for the subject, where it's far more likely to get a reply from someone knowledgeable.

Girish
I think you might have misread, I specifically suggested that such topics such as hacking be prohibited. Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding then. I must have zoomed over the 'prohibited' part. Still, I don't think such tutorials need to have a forum of their own. As fred has said, there are many tutorial providing sites for the same purpose. Having an entire forum dedicated to such tutorials would only mean people either ripping tutorials from somewhere else or making a new topic for every little thing they find. And then the subsequent posters either congratulating the OP or flaming him. All in all, a spam fest! It would be too much work for very little in return as the few genuinely good tutorials might just get lost in the barricade of other useless tuts. If you think you have a pretty good tutorial of your own that cannot be found on most other sites, then I think you're allowed to post it in the Tech & PC Chat forum. You can even have a tutorials listings topic where you can link to all the tuts posted in there just so you can find them in one single topic.
