Moonshield
So we had to do these drawing tutorials ( right?) for my multi-panel comic class because most of the people taking the class aren't very experienced artists. Anyway, I'm considering either leaving this alone, or inking and maybe rendering it with a background. Click for to enlarge. yeah, I know I need to get a better scan where the paper isn't wavy, but that's newsprint for you. DeeperRed
Thats f*cking brillient mate Copiuos amounts of detail and good shading. If I have to lay down on critique it would be that the Crow is massive compared to the person at the bottom of the tree but that might of been the effect you were going for. As for inking it. It would look pretty sweet if you do a good job (Which I am sure you will). I only occasinally ink my sketchs, and thats only really good. CCPD
Great job on the tree and the crow. The details look amazing. I’d say go for the ink and background. If the end result will be bad you can always keep the original, can’t you? Abel.
Detail is stunning, is the crow meant to be an overarching, oppressive being? Symbolically? Overall, fantastic drawing. Moonshield
Update! I'm unsure about the figure now, I might get rid of him. The background I'm thinking'll be kind of a foggy grey sky, maybe some tall grass running to the sides of the page from the tree. Wuirt
The tree is of a much better standard than the figure, to me the figure just detracts from the general quality of the image. The Guru
It would look better without the figure, it just doesn't fit in. VERY nice detail. Great job Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059639101 Share on other sites
Moonshield
Another update. Added sky, grass, and earth. I got rid of the figure, but still feel like something else needs to go there where the roots meet. After putting in the sky, the tall grass looks kind of weird with it, I feel, but it looked fine before. Also, I was wondering if I should widen it into some standard format? I've just been working with the size of the scan so far. x SHXC
That's brilliant, Moonshield. Before I got to the bottom of the page, and your update, I thought it looked better without the figure at the bottom of the tree. Only thing I'd do, which I don't know if it would improve the piece, is make it have alot more of a darker feel, but that's me. Keep it up man. The Guru
I would make the sky a lot darker to connect with the tree. And about the roots, try make the soil a little more dirty/dark and maybe some pebbles and stones. Moonshield
Yeah, totally agree about the sky guys. Ended up messing with the soil too, and added some shading around the roots. Benjimino234
That's amazing. That's a well drawn tree and it would fit into many different backgrounds. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059640316 Share on other sites
Hell No..
Loving the end result there. I think it was a good decision to rid of Mr Scarecrow. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059640367 Share on other sites
The Guru
Great final piece. The shading around the roots really adds more to the picture. Well done. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059640540 Share on other sites

Moonshield
Thanks guys. I just wish I could figure out how to make the grass look less photohoppy, especially the right side. Go over with thinner brush strokes? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059640677 Share on other sites
Ruffio
Try adding them a nice pattern If you find a grassy or rocky pattern, on overlay blending option, with the correct scale and transparency, it will look great Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/411687-old-crow/#findComment-1059640715 Share on other sites
Pico
For the grass, I would suggest setting your brush to a very light opacity and flow and using either a black, gray or very dark brown. Then filing in areas in the grass for some more shadow, it'll add in some good depth. I would say do this especially at the grass line where it meats the dirt. Don't do too much though. Also, are you using layers for this? I would suggest that, so in case you f*ck it up you can just delete or edit the one layer. Plus you can use layer effects such as multiply, screen, color burn, etc which will give you some very nice looks for certain things. I find multiplying shadows is quite effective. I'd also say work on the shading of the tree some more. Larger areas, not just for the small bark details. Make the farther back limbs just noticeably darker, and the lower and side edges darker, especially where splits in the branches and trunk occur. Very nice progress from when it started. I've been really wanting to fire up PS but with my computer crashing constantly I'm afraid I'll be in the middle of something, having not saved for too long and I'll lose it all edit: For the dirt, if you want to add a nice texture to it I'd say try playing around with the Texturizer effect. I'd start with a pretty intense relief then use Transform and the erase brush to shape it around the dirt and make the proper depth effect on it. Color burn might add a nice effect for the dirt, but it'll probably darken up the soil a bit, so keep that in mind. Might just want to set it as Multiply.
