I was a long time ago a pop music listener.Who wasnt? That lasted until I found some good artists.I listened to Rap and then Rock, now Chiptune.

There are way to many pop artists these days, and they make a lot of money because of those people.I never bought a single CD until now.I dont have to.Chiptune is free 100%.It is cheap and beautiful.

I shouldnt say anything about my friends which are mostly pop listeners.I certainly love music a lot, that's why I been trough more genres than those. They probably listen it for 'acting cool' but I listen it because I'm addicted to it, it makes my days better.

Anyway, back to the pointm what's your opinion?

P.S.80's pop\disco\metal\etc. was the bomb.Nowadays there are few artists tp have made quality music.

More or less all music has been ruined these days, which isn't a surprise with sh*t like Pop idol & The X-Factor killing it, real talented artists dont have a cat in hells chance with c*nts like Simon Cowell around. The sooner people like him die, the sooner music will return to the way it was in the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's.

I like it but not all. I like it. But Rap/Hip-Hop is on my first place still.

Everything is slowly sinking into the depths of the septic tank known as the music industry.

Because hair metal, disco, boy bands, new wave, and the f*cking monkees were good.

Apart from a period in 2006-7 when things started to look a bit more promising (to me anyway), I pretty much lost interest in 'contemporary' music around 2000-01, with one or two exceptions (Eminem being the main one).

Bring back the 90s I say - I'll more than happily take Suede, Ocean Colour Scene and Ian Brown (the latter two are still going, but no-one seems to pay any attention) over the likes of James Blunt, The Feeling and Scouting for f*cking Girls any day of the f*cking week!

Good points in this video.

Pop stars dont compose their songs, not even write the lyrics. Now that's a talented artist. sarcasm.gif

People who like pop music have either a narrow range of music taste or just want to like listening to music that their friends like. I hate pop music, althought I used to listen to it when I first listened to music, but then I changed to dance music then into the sub-genre's.

Now I can't stand pop music, except for some songs which may stand out.

Oi, theres nothing wrong with New Wave! blush.gif

I can actually tolerate hair metal and some early heavy metal, the rest either sickens me (black metal/death metal) or broes the living hell out of me (8 minuite songs with a long, slow intro & ridiculously long guitar solo's). The monkee's were sh*te, I will agree, but society just doesen't churn out proper music these days.

The only good modern Pop is Indie Pop, Pop Punk, Pop Rock, Twee Pop, Synth Pop, Futurepop, and Power Pop. Although there are some other good modern pop artist.

I grew up with 90s europop, and that was the only time I ever liked it. Looking back now though I realize even back then it was god awful. To think I listened to stuff like this

Oh god, does anyone else remember this gem?

The way I look at it, every generation had sh*t music, we just look at this one as if it's worse because we're part of it.

At those times, music such as what people today consider "80s classics" were regarded in the same light as the sh*tty mainstream music we have today.

There is very little different about the mindset behind popular music of previous decades to what we have today.

Sure, the style is different, but they were regarded just as the pop music of today. I find I have to dig around to find the music that I consider to be of worth from any of these decades.

Music isn't being killed off, this generation's music scene is similar to any other, people in those decades thought they had the worst music, just as we do today. Music will continue to be that way.

It will never get "better" or "worse", people will always be narrow-minded enough to dismiss their generation of music as sh*t and worship the music a previous generation thought to be sh*t.

Pretty sure you missed his point there.

The bands you listed are needles in the haystack of what was at the time popular music. We remember those because they were the best at the time but when a lot of people say "Older music was generally better" they forget that for every Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin there was a hell of a lot of crap at the time too.

I remember much of those 70s tunes, there's a local station that plays 60s and 70s stuff, it's not always hit song after hit song. I feel because of the very nature of the music business, and the sphere of influence, the music as a whole suffers. Compared with the way RADIO and RECORD labels WERE run, things were pretty damn well organized, in terms of what was played and what was available to get and hear. Concerts were even cheap!

What was bad about the Monkees?? Their TV show is classic! I enjoyed it. Hair metal, really depends, most of it was terrific, I feel.

I was just listening to NEVERMIND, it's an Interview, all members of Nirvana discuss their formation, even describing their music as Grunge! Kurt Cobain mentions that they love pop music, that their first album was rough and raw, more aggressive, but that they had the pop songs already in the can, that they playing songs with strong radio pop ties.

It's also interesting to note how much the Melvins had to do with their success. We can blame them, perhaps, as well!

I feel Damo is incorrect, though some points are valid, people I knew during the 70s had little music wise to complain about, the 60s, perhaps a bit more, music, like the times, they Were a Changin' as Dylan said and DID.

The 1980s came about at a time when music made another paradigm shift, to be honest. It was in upheaval. There's some interesting things to read during the early 1980s to get a feel for it... Music press.

I know WHAM!, Culture Club with Boy George and Hootie and the Blowfish were targets that rockers like me lashed out at. Madonna was a blight, but nowadays, out of most Diva's she's more respected for her body of work. I think over time, the more they grow as artists, the listeners can also re-evaluate what was done

For me todays music has gone down the swany, I mostly listen to old classic hip hop 2pac and the so on I like music with lyrics that mean something and not repeating the same words over and over again like Soulja Boy.

I think out of all the generations this generation has had the worst music,Soulja boy,lil wayne even the Crazy Frog had a number 1 hit. Alright every now and then a good song comes out but altogether I say theres about 10 good songs a year that I would like.

I just cant see it changing its just going to keep getting worse and worse. These talent shows are ruining it and the internet.

I agree with you.I also started to listen to hip - hop again but I only listen to old stuff too, like NWA or Elektro(which is also a form of hip - hop of the 80's)etc.

  • 2 weeks later...

You hear recently (this past week) Michelle Obama telling kids there's more to music then Hip Hop?

I find that hard to believe, SAY WHAT?!?!?

There's a whole friggin world of music besides Hip Hop, I was even surprised. Bands I've been looking up I can't even find their music online, just some write ups on personal blogs and dedicated music sites. So if you want to hear those, the Internet and radio [today] are not gonna cut it. A main reason I am so serious about my FM radio archives, we had some really daring stuff, even for commercial radio!!
