I've had a few antivirus software like NOD 32, Norton, Kasperski etc. and I have to say my pc lagged a lot with them on.This pc is decent, I certainly have a good enough CPU but for some reason it slowed me down.

So I uninstalled the Antivirus and then I used Bit Defender Quick scan and discovered two Trojan Vundos.I found a way to remove them(with Windows Malicious tool).I can safely say that I can remove those whenever I want and I do a daily scan of the system and I see if I'm infected. If automatic updates is disabled

then that means I'm infected again.

I'd rather have a fully operating PC than one laggy as hell.

How do you prefer it?

I don't understand why your PC would lag unless you're doing full scans every 5 minutes or so. Besides, the only anti-viruses that eat up a lot of memory are Norton and McAfee. I'm currently using Kaspersky and I'm thoroughly satisfied with it. I don't even need to regularly scan my PC because if an infected file is found on the HDD, it informs me immediately.

I dont do scans every 5 minutes but for some reason it started lagging after a while I had NOD 32 installed. But anyway it wasnt any good because I had Trojans that it couldnt detect on scans.

f*ck it!If I can do it myself then I'll save some memory.

I use AVP at home, it does not affect connectivity at all, detects problems without being overly intrusive and is relatively cheap.

That said, I've never virused a home machine.

Yes, Kaspersky FTW ^^ Plus if you have a quad it doesn't really even affect gaming.

AVG is alright, but I think I may have a few dormant and hidden viruses, although for the moment it seems cool, nothing pops up when scanned (apart from the occasional non threatening cookie). I'm considering Avast! how is that like?

Yep, Avira AntiVir is pretty low on the resources and doesn't make a noticeable effect on my performance as far as I can tell, but I usually turn it off when I play a game.

Right now im running Avast home...although this isn't my gaming rig either, so i dunno how it would effect that aspect.

seems to update every other day and doesn't hog the resources for me.

If you want a good antivirus that doesn't hog resources use Avira AntiVir.

Right now I'm clean and I can say I'm the best antivirus!

Running a PC without an antivirus program is asking for trouble. Only do this if you really want to mess up your PC.

No anti virus for the last two years and no viruses.

Therefore, common sense is the best anti virus.

Common sense is a large factor, but running without any protection is the opposite of that. Any website you visit could infect you, even just a custom smiley sent through MSN can execute malicious code. Running without an AV and not executing any files or clicking random links that you get sent- yeah that's common sense. But that ain't going to stop your machine being compromised.

As for the TC: If you are getting lag using software such as Kaspersky or Nod32, use Avira's Free AV, it's low for resources and the best free solution out there.

I've used loads over the years. AVG was my first, it did the job okay, but I didn't really feel like it did the best job. Moved onto ZoneAlarm ( both AV & Firewall ) And I f*cking loved it. Shame about it going to sh*t when a big update came a long. After having to change, I went with Kasperskey, it was good I just hated the fact that it all looked so technical/whenever I did a scan it would never tell me what things were/weren't found and what to do with it. Eventually got sick of that aspect and right now I have Avast. No problems so far so all is good.

AVira is so far good with me, I have it combined with Comodo Firewall and McAfee Site Advisor. And don't have any problems.

My only issue with Avira, don't know if they still do it, because I stopped using it for this reason, is that every time it does an update it has that stupid popup.

Yeah it has the pop up, but that has never bothered me.

btw I use Avast on Windows 7, since I don't think Avira works on 7 yet. But anyway I don't find problems either. I'm just waiting for Comodo to come out for a W7 version.

Avira was great though other than that. As for Comodo, I use the Firewall on Vista and 7, and I love it. I use AVG8.5 as my AV. Thinking about switching from AVG though. How is the Comodo AV?

BTW, at least for the firewall, to get Comodo working in 7 I ran the installer in Vista Compatibility Mode.

LOL whats wrong with that hehehe

If you want you could have gone into the scheduler for when it automatically updates and set the update to 'invisible' so it does it auto in the background smile.gif

Avira does that too? I know AntiVir does it and it's something I've just learned to live with.

I wonder when Google will come out with it's own anti virus or even anti spyware

//edit

My bad Avira is AntiVir. I thinking of Avast

I've read that WinDefender can actually work for you. I use a variety as well, but there's NO substitute for back ups of any critical data. Keep and old PC to put the files on. Preferrably a SFF system

not to worry, i can hadle i-

seriously, who the f*ck is stupid enough not to use anti virus software? there are situations where you can't be sure if something is safe or not. when you get infected once, you'll start using them. i'm sure there's an old saying for this...

Spot the Windows users lol. I don't use any anti-virus because as far as I'm aware, nerds in basements don't bother trying to infect Linux systems. It's the best. biggrin.gif

Nerds are the ones in their basements that use Linux tounge.gif

There are viruses for Linux, just not as well known or wide spread
