Ziggy455
The funny thing is, is that we're all still talking about writing and we're not actually DOING it. So to speak. "I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how."

Don Garcia
Mostly true Zig, but no one's reading either. The hell is the point of posting works if no one bothers to read and/or offer any criticism whatsoever, or anything more than "real cool story, liked da characters," etc? Ziggy455
Speak for yourself. I'd love to see some of your latest work Em, True Don, whenever I read a story on here, most comments usually refer to plot development with a cookie added in for effect, however criticism is hard to come by without some twelve year old going 'stfu n00b my story is so l33t!!!!' Anybody actually written anything? I had this idea, the name is a bit iffy but we look at a famous movie, game and good media as such and each write a short story based on that piece of media. I call it 'Stories from the [blank]. Such as Vice City: Stories from the Malibu Club - Of course story diversification would allow you to write it about ANYTHING related to vice, sh*t, the plot could be set anywhere you wanted. Ermm, Hamlet the book - [Tales from the castle] Etc. Etc. Each writer would write a story, with already made or totally fictional characters, and at the end of each week and such, we would choose the winner. I know I'm cutting it close to SSOTM and such but hey! Gimme a break, I'm not as talented as you mu'af*ckas! ... Food for thought. "I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how." Ziggy455
I doubt I'll be posting anything. So you propose a fanfiction competition? More or less. Nobody said it necessarily had to be 'Fanfic' per say. It could be based on an event such as World War II, or a documentary based on pearl harbour, the 9/11 - anything really. Like I said, food for thought. "I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how."
Tyler
Frank puts a satirical fiction about us, and people start the posting. Ironic, or was it a elaborate ploy by Cand the entire time? Now, the only question is whether or not this deserves it's own parody.
Typhus
I was posting even before his amusing little satire. It just takes time, doesn't it? Although I do find it amusing that all he need do is lift his little finger and get just oodles of people replying to his topic. Why is that? Tyler
You know, it is pretty funny how that works. I mean, it is extremely weird how Frank can post a paragraph of hilarity, and he gets nine replies, while people post three parts to a genuine story only gets so many more. It's unprofessional, but I guess that's what reputation does for ya. I mean, I could post an amazing saga of epic space fights and sex, but I'd probably get two replies at most. Tyler
Woah, don't beat yourself up bro. I mean, he is definitely good, but writers are not competing here. Like Em said a while ago, none of us are at our best here, and this is just a place for peer to peer advice. I'm certainly not a good writer in respect to Frank, but that is partly due to me not being able to express what I feel in the story I post. It's his style, and not mine. I can't tell you how you write, as I haven't read too much of your work, but don't think you're a piece of sh*t simply because he gets more recognition bro. Speaking of which, I'm going to go ahead and call out the following people to write something within the next five days. If they don't then they shall be subject to ridicule and rotten tomatoes, of course while latched in some medieval device that can only be used for kinky stuff. Anyway, here they be; Eminence! Don Garcia, El Zilcho, Ziggy444445, and if Oxi is here, then him too. Of course I will write something up myself, but I am really hoping that these people get something down, since I haven't read a story from any of them in a long time. Canofceleri
Mostly true Zig, but no one's reading either. The hell is the point of posting works if no one bothers to read and/or offer any criticism whatsoever, or anything more than "real cool story, liked da characters," etc? If you're looking for more than this you'd be hard pressed to find it 'round this neck of the woods. There are some writing forums on the net that offer serious feedback if you are willing to invest your own thoughtful in-depth critiques on other works as well. These are workshops, whereas this is one section on a massive forum dedicated to a videogame where some members post a thing or two. If a few of you are displeased with the experience here you should PM and settle on an outside writer's forum that is serious and let that place absorb your talents. Or someone could write something and get published and see how that feels. I've sort of given up this year. I've got a lot on my plate and the few things I have submitted to content publishers have yielded no positive results. Personally, the only reason I keep posting writing here is because if I write something it will languish in MyDocuments and be of no further interest. Because I don't have faith in myself and I hate my work I post it here on a subforum where I suspect most of the other writers post for the same reasons I do. Hello, if we actually believed we could do something worthwhile with our work why the f*ck would we post on here for free and to little fanfare? Yet we do it, because we have a creative impulse, stories we want to tell. I spend more time letting the arts move me than I do creating my own, I become inspired by great art and this creates tension in me as a creative person, makes me want to contribute to this great human tradition. But we all fall short, very short, of producing anything close to the things that inspire us in the first place, at least I do of the things that move me. I mean, it is extremely weird how Frank can post a paragraph of hilarity, and he gets nine replies, while people post three parts to a genuine story only gets so many more. It's unprofessional, but I guess that's what reputation does for ya. Unoriginal, you just posted that here. Three minutes earlier however, you PMed me and said: Oh, and nice piece of work in WD bro, apparently it boosted enthusiasm. My first reaction was not much really, just another reaffirmation that you're a sycophant and that you wish you had the stature on here that you perceive I have. You should be more nuanced--read about nihilism, spend time thinking about your and other people's motives, try to catch yourself in a few tricky lies, or better yet you should try to be less unoriginal. Why the f*ck does it bother you that I get some half-assed feedback on every other thing I post while you sometimes get none? I sometimes get 0, do you count that? You seem to be into counting, maybe try math instead of writing? Proving theorems is a lucrative business with the high probability of receiving recognition and accolades if you prove something noteworthy and original. You're alright though, Unoriginal. I can identify with your tension to a point, I really can. I just can't say anything about this that has any honesty in it without being a hypocrite, so don't take it to heart. I'm guilty, about a lot of things. I've got a lot of weak spots for people to poke holes in, but mostly I just do it myself. Just poke more holes in yourself so other people don't get to them first, Un. 9 replies to a piece of sh*t called Dump, and you're counting. I'm a miserable f*ck half the time because of idiots like you and I. Edited October 17, 2010 by Canofceleri
Oxidizer
I'm going to go ahead and call out the following people to write something within the next five days. Don Garcia, El Zilcho, Ziggy444445, and if Oxi is here, then him too. Lucky I'm kinky then, innit? Though can't it be hot honey instead of rotten tomatoes? Though I honestly think regarding writing that in order to get anything done you have to be genuinely interested in - and excited about - what you're writing. I think subliminally it's not working for me because all of my latest ideas are more or less rehashes of stuff I've already written. That and I'm over my perfectionism and it's just sheer laziness now. This is a paragraph of something I wrote last month (one of the aforementioned rehashed ideas) and I still haven't picked fault with it yet (it's nowhere near perfect but I don't think it's awful - well, maybe a little ): "That girlfriend of yours," Kristy prompted, holding out a flute of ice-cold champagne. "What about her?" Leroy asked halfheartedly, taking the proffered drink and sipping it gratefully. "Is it serious?" Kristy inquired further, looking at Leroy over the brim of her own glass. Putting his down, Leroy lent back in his chair. "I love her," he shrugged, not quite sure where this was going. "Why?" Kristy bit her lip for a moment, deciding that she wasn't going to beat around the bush. "I want to utilise her for one of my films." Leroy for his part just stared at her for long moments with those gasoline-coloured eyes of his. Was this woman for f*cking real? "She's my girlfriend," he answered finally, his tone making it clear to her the magnitude of his shock. Of all the things he expected from this meeting, this sure as hell wasn't one of them. Tyler
Well now, it seems I have indeed been written out as a hypocrite. to be Frank about it I wrote the first one mainly because of what Typhus wrote. I have no jealousy towards the fact that people read your writing and call it good, and I am hoping that I didn't appear as someone envious of you because of it. Hopefully, I didn't come of as too much of a sycophant, as that definitely was not my motif, in the slightest. I mean, that was pretty harsh judgement there, but it's not like I can really reply to you in a direct way, you sort of covered your bases there. Unless I wanted to be ironic and hypocritical, that is. Honestly man, it doesn't bother me that you get replies, since it seems like you put some sort of effort into writing - even if the only effort you put in was clicking add reply. This is a paragraph of something I wrote last month (one of the aforementioned rehashed ideas) and I still haven't picked fault with it yet (it's nowhere near perfect but I don't think it's awful - well, maybe a little tounge.gif ): I thought it was a good amount of suspense in adding whatever kind of story you're trying to convey (and I think I know what sort of story this is). Ziggy455
Jesus christ, look at us all. Still jumping around, analysing our own sh*t, just to get a mere:I like this, but f*ck that! I've tried other forums, believe me. I've tried thousands, and whatever piece I post, no matter how well planned, how proofread or how f*cking perfected. All I get, like Typhus said, is peanuts. You people come on here, and you all complain, we all complain andm ake excuses such as I'm sick, I'm busy, my cat choked on a used condom and so I lost the will to write. I'll be honest with you, I toned down my writing not out of ampathy or an inate desire of feeling I could do better elsewhere, no. I stopped because I merely felt I couldn't compete with half the f*ckwits on this forum who can squeeze out such pieces like 'Dump'- (No pun intended) Canny, I read your piece. It was good. Short, but good. What I'm tired off is posting things on here, and recieving no critical feedback - and that's all I want, but usually all I get is people questioning my plot, or questioning my will as a writer. We all say 'I'll write this up in a few days'. That won't work. Three years on, I'm no closer to getting a novel published, no closer to finishing a screenplay or getting any fiction sorted. Why? Because I suck and this is the place that got me started. So why now can it not be the god damn place which helps me improve and f*cking finish? Critique my work, trash it to hell - but make sure it f*cking helps me in some way. You want a frequent writer? That's me. Just critique my work. And Eminence... For christ sake, write something. Please. I'm done. Edited October 17, 2010 by Ziggy455 "I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how."

nerner
Anyone else think it's really hard to write science fiction sometimes? I can't say that I have ever tried towrite like that, too far from my "comfort zone" in writing terms. But for me a parody would be a lot easier than a serious sci-fi piece. Tyler
No kidding, I don't know why I find Sci-Fi amazing all of the sudden, it's actually very unorthodox from what I usually see, in terms of genre. I just started getting into Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey) and Philip K. Dick. Science Fiction is just an amazing genre to think about, in terms of what the storylines usually contain. But, that's just me
nerner
Has anyone here read "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace? Tyler
Cannot say I have Nerner. I assume it is a wonderful book though yes? So I've been working on this piece, nothing fancy, just sort of writing out a time-line to the Universe. I'm not sure where I'll go with it, but if anyone's interested I'll show you the time line so I can get some feedback.
Vercetti21
Ooh, I think Unvirginiser did something similar to that while back. But future timelines are intriguing to me so post it or PM. Although I think if you were to post it here it could be fleshed out into a narrative; a timeline is really just an outline. I've been playing around with the Red Dead fanfic I posted a week back and I'm finally setting on a story I'd like to tell. The novella will cover the time period in Marston's life between the missions "And The Truth Will Set You Free" and "The Outlaw's Return", building particularly on the themes of encroaching government and moral ambiguity in the game. Tyler
Wow, see that redead fanfic was good man. You gave the narrative that would be keen in an actual novel, but still focused on a Universe based off of a game. Very good stuff, and I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes. For my time-line, I'm going to wait a good couple of days. Sit on what I wrote and see how I like it. Besides, I'm adding more and more to it all the time, considering this is really interesting to me. I really want the reader to get that feeling when he reads my story, that everything in the book were actually consequences of the past, and all that.
