Typhus
Are they the archive things in libraries? I can't say I have, but that sounds really interesting. I'd like to take a look at that sort of thing myself actually, see what things were like back then. I'm going out in a moment to use it. I'm going to be looking at a newspaper from 1901. Your local library should have this sort of thing, they were very accomodating when I needed some information about it all. EDIT Just back, worked like a treat. Microfiche is weird though, there's loads of dials for scanning down the page and zooming in. It's like a film-roll. Useful, certainly, but a bizzare experience nonetheless. I'm grateful though, because these resources simply are not available anywhere else. Edited June 3, 2010 by Typhus
Oxidizer
I'm writing again! Kind of. Well, I'm writing all the scenes that come to my head and filing 'em away for future use; it's better than nothing, right? This one's from my Sicilian Mafia idea which is tentatively named Blood & Gold: "Oh, for God's sake," Ludovico muttered under his breath, withdrawing his nine millimeter from the inside of his jacket and shooting his girlfriend through the heart. He felt nothing.

Ziggy455
So, what have any of you planned in terms of writing? Portland Chase, alot of written work has been been done by me to make this as good as f*ckin' humanly possible to within my skill. The Script I'm doing - sides that. Nothing. I need help though guys - with my stories...my narrative never seems...Erm, how can I put this? It sucks - it's so clunky and choppy, how do I better myself with this? Like how I'm trying to write in a third perso perspective but I suck - any tips on how to improve on this? Edited June 7, 2010 by Ziggy455 "I might have laughed if I'd have remembered how." Osric
I always write in first person, so I really don't know. Still thinking of some BUYA ideas, but I best let them lie until I can get a short narrative off the ground.

Kaizer Chief
Hey, what's the general attitude here with game-scripts? I see they used to be quite popular about a year ago, but recently died down. I've got some ideas, but are the WD frequenters still open to reading and enjoying game-scripts? Or is it generally frowned upon? Edited June 14, 2010 by Kaizer Chief

Osric
In terms of ideas, I have one. It is a game, but it's NOT a BUY game. It's loosely based off of Deadliest Warrior. You pick two warrior templates from a list, one from each category(Ancient and Modern), create a character from the warrior template, pick appropriate weapons, and you write stories and develop backstory for that warrior. Every so often two warriors will be selected to fight, similar to gang wars in BUYG. And the best judged two out of three stories will determine the winner. These are the warriors so far, Ancient Warriors are before gunpowder, Modern Warriors use gunpowder weapons. If you want to add a warrior, PM me. ANCIENT WARRIORS Prehistoric Hunter Apache Brave Maori Warrior Egyptian War Priest Hebrew Light Infantry Babylonian Cavalry Persian Immortal Spartan Hoplite Roman Centurion Han Chinese Foot Soldier Gothic Barbarian Celtic Raider Viking Knight Byzantine Legionary Saracen Warrior Samurai Ninja Scottish Highlander Zulu Warrior Zande Warrior Aztec Jaguar Mongol Raider Hun Barbarian Chinese Pirate(circa 200 AD) Rajput Warrior Arabian Assassin Modern Warriors Conquistador French Musketeer Carribbean Pirate British Redcoat Colonial American Minuteman Appalachian Mountain Man(ex. Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett) Napoleonic Infantry Cossack(circa 1830) Confederate Soldier U.S. Cavalry(circa 1873) Old West Gunslinger Russian Imperial Soldier(circa 1915) Japanese Imperial Soldier(circa 1942) Soviet Red Army(circa 1943) Nazi Wehrmacht U.S. Marine(circa 1944) 1950's Greaser Thug(ex. The Outsiders, West Side Story) Japanese Yakuza(circa 1950) Italian Mafia(circa 1959) Viet Cong IRA Fighter Mujahideen Fighter Colombian Cartel L.A. Gangbanger(Non-specific) Outlaw Biker Straight Edge Punk Russian Mafiya NYPD SWAT Officer U.S. Army Green Berets British SAS French GIGN Russian Spetsnaz Chinese PLA German GSG-9 Italian GIS Israeli Mossad Commando Japanese Self-Defense Force Soldier
Omnia sunt Communia
That sounds a bit more interesting. Quite restricting though. Reminds me of a similar style of forum game I use to play on another site. Each person would create a character then they would be pitted against eachother, each player writing a introduction, fight scene and end to their battle. After the last end post was made an independent judge would evaulate both pieces and rate them out of ten - the person with the highest score would win. The story would follow in this pattern: Player A's Introduction Player B's Introduction Player A's Fight Scene Player B's Fight Scene After the final fight scene the story would split off into two alternative realities:Player A's End Player B's End Whichever person won would have their version of events become canon. P.S. Did Deadliest Warrior seriously have 'Straight Edge Punk' as one of their Warriors?
Landstalker
I'm thinking of making a GTA SA fan fic. Might also add choice at the end of each chapters. What do you think of my idea? Also, the name is: "Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Stories" ~In general~ The main character of my story would be someone associated with the Johnson family, of course. The guys was a mercenary working for each gang to earn cash to make his way to the top. One day, he receive a mission of killing someone but if finish bad for him. After some years, he restart his life. At least, he's trying to do this. But, every thing changed. Every thing is f*cked up. His friends and his family are going down. The gangs took over all the state. The cops, FBI, and even the army are in dificulties. As he's out, our hero wants revenge but he have also some dificult choices to make: will he restart being a merc? Or will he start his own gang? Will he help his family? Will he help his friends? Will he quit San Andreas? Will he help those who were not able the gangs to take over? But only one thing between him and his goal: he is amnesiac! In a struggle for liberty, San Andreas and it's population will know what means war! Edited June 15, 2010 by Landstalker
Osric
No, I added a lot of warriors of my own, including Straight Edge Punk, we're not talking the skateboard kind, we're talking the hardcore knife-wielding thugs like in FSU. Maybe a better idea is instead of set warriors, the players send me a PM on a warrior and their weapons. As long as they are real, and use real weapons, it's in. You can have a ninja like Hanzo Hazashi, but not a ninja like Naruto Uzumaki. They can be an original character warrior anywhere from 12,000 BC-2010 AD. I was thinking of one of three ideas: An SAS Commando, A female SWAT officer in New York or New Jersey, or a 1950's Yakuza thug in post-war Japan. Each character can have up to six reasonable weapons of their choice. For example, Sara, my SWAT officer would have the following six weapons.... AR-15 MP5 Mossberg 500 Browning HP Taser Flashbang Edited June 16, 2010 by Osric
Omnia sunt Communia
I'm guessing you didn't mean that sort of Straight Edge Punk. Your concept sounds interesting though the only problem I have is with the limitations it puts on people's imagination. Maybe allowing people just to make up their own characters, instead of having to follow preset designs or "classes" would allow for more interesting and diverse characters? Osric
Read the edited post, I have decided to excise the templates, letting the characters choose their own weapons and warriors, so long as they are realistic.
Omnia sunt Communia
Sorry, I didn't notice that you had edited your post. I tried putting together something like this a while back, though it never got off the ground. Here is a link to the original topic, called The Colosseum. Only one fight ever came of The Colosseum and it was never finished. Maybe you could take some inspiration from that topic. My advice would be to keep it all in one topic. Letting people write background stories for their character, earn experience (through writing stories) which they can spend on different things and being able to challenge and fight eachother. Omnia sunt Communia
I'm not up for being a staff member, as I'm not online often enough to actually do any good. I'm up for getting involved and helping with the set-up process though. Should be interesting. I just hope it can get off the ground, unlike The Colosseum. Omnia sunt Communia
I've had another idea for story. It came out of my initial idea to develop of a Kane & Lynch style story mixed with previous characters created by myself and General Goose. The story revolves around Konstantin Ivanovich and Kwasi Afoum, a pair of mercenaries who were hired by the US government to undertake a top secret mission. Several years down the line they find themselves being hunted by the government after the news of the top secret mission came to light in the media. They now have to fight for their lives against the government that once hired them, they must use every skill they've learned to stay alive. What do people think? Eminence
Sounds like pretty basic stuff, Jacky. What separates it from anything else? What makes us empathise with these characters? You've given us a big paragraph of information, and yet you've hardly told us anything at all. What's going to happen? Landstalker. To start with your title, isn't that a bit of an obvious choice? I can see what you're going for - following on from the actual games - but that title's already been used countless times, on here, even. Nothing more unique spring to mind? What's with the constant reference to mercenaries? Is your character a gang member or what? Obviously San Andreas gets ridiculous by its end in terms of plot realism, but at the start at least it seems to keep itself focused on gritty gang life. What's your focus? The main problem, though. What's with the amnesiac twist at the end? Really? Well, if that's true, how's he going to know anything about anything you've just described? Why will he care? Yeah, he might have people coming after him, but his motivation to "get revenge" or whatever is pretty dead.

You've given us a big paragraph of information, and yet you've hardly told us anything at all. What's going to happen? I'm not sure yet. I've only come up with the basic story. There are a lot of things that need to go into the plot, characters, setting etc. before it's ready to start being written. There should be an interesting balance between Konstantin & Kwasi due to the different paths they choose after retiring from the mercenary world. I'm still working on the idea for the most part though. @Ziggy: I know loads of pen & paper RPGs. I play them quite a lot. It really depends on what you're looking for, what you're looking to play. If you want to play a fantasy one; play Dungeons & Dragons, if you want science fiction; play Traveller, if you want horror; play Call of Cthulu or World of Darkness. As for websites, I can't suggest any as I play all mine in real life with friends.

Like in the ghetto or any horror ones (Besides vampires or werewolves?) Most RPGs allow you to play as either a good or evil character, it all depends on the type of character you create. As for ones that revolve particullary around crime? Gangbusters is an 1930s crime game, apart from that, I don't really know of any others. Zombies ones are a lot easier to come by - All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a popular one. @Osric: I've only ever played V:TM, never got around to playing any other WoD games. I'm interested in playing Werewolf: The Forsaken or World of Darkness. I'm currently looking to set up a science fiction (probably Shadowrun) or Dungeons & Dragon (2.0) game with some friends in my area at the moment though.
