I concur. I was beginning to avoid this topic for fear of seeing another useless character blueprint and "I wish I could just write this!" rant. Seriously, no one cares about these ideas and flings until they've been pieced together. Just shut up, close your browser, open MS Word and write. If you can't write, we don't want to hear about what you could write.

Well wouldn't this thread be kind of useless then?

Just for the sake of keeping the peace, I think anyone that's had any form of problem with each other should keep calm, relax and take the discussion to PM. Things are tense, and I know WD is a ghost-town lately for one reason or another. We're a community here and there isn't enough of us to fall out over clashing opinions and beliefs. I'm not saying who's right and who's wrong, that's not what this is about. Let's stick together, eh? icon14.gif Come on, touch gloves.

I know, f*cking hell, relax everybody.

I don't see why posting ideas can be that bad? If they're discussed and given advice on, then surely they can only help the writer? Yes I know that posting nothing but ideas for months on end isn't progress, but Rome wasn't built in a day and most of the ideas are actually good. I don't think it's worth bickering over, especially since we're trying to be a community and help each other. icon14.gif

Andy, I think your 'hop off the bandwagon' line is apt now, old chap.

This isn't what The Social Club is for, you should know that Phil, since you started it.

EDIT: I realise I pasted the wrong thing, Phil.

This.

Any more arguments in this area and reprimands will be handed out. Regardless of position.

Secondly, get back on topic. Writers updates was locked. This may indeed follow suit. If it does, a similar topic will not be allowed.

Now lets see some ideas, yes?

Are you kidding me? The first post makes it very clear, as does the title, that almost anything goes in here, and that was the whole point in the topic's existence in the first place. It's the social club, and that allows for discussions, chats and ideas or whatever else is on people's mind, whether completely writing-related or not. Whoever directed you here, as I know you're not a frequent visitor to WD (no offense intended), may have informed you simply of some 'bickering', but everything going on here is part of a very logical debate, whether worded in such a fashion or not.

Telling people that nobody f*cking cares doesn't seem very logical to me, neither being told to shut up about their writing ideas and problems.

This is still Writers' Discussion. If you want to talk about things not related to the subforum, choose a different section or take it off the public forums into PM, private forums or off the forum altogether. Specialist areas still have a subject to adhere to. Ignoring this simple fact is against forum rules.

Either way, as a member of staff you full well know we don't appreciate arguments in public, especially when staff members are directly involved. Regardless of the area of the forum. I suggest you take it to PM and change the subject.

LCL should be updated soon, expect Dominic's first job for the Lupisellas to be bloody.

@Eminence and Vercetti

To be fair, the only BUY that failed was Build Up Your Family, BUYG was a huge success, and BUYA is a moderate success, BUYS is small, but ongoing. But a Build Up Your Faction(Based off of Fallout) will wait until I can get at least past Chapter III of LCL, which will be weeks. But expect LCL to get it's first chapter tomorrow. I might even get two chapters posted, seeing as I have a three-day weekend. Plus by then, the heat from Build Up Your Family's failure should die off. One of the main gripes with BUYS was that you can't build up a zombie survivor group like you can a gang or army. Your biggest complaints with Build Up Your Family was that it was too much like BUYG. Well, with Build Up Your Faction, it's different from BUYG and BUYA, but makes sense, since paramilitary factions like the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave can be built up.

You're tedious. You've got it all wrong. And these are the last words I'm gonna say on the matter: grow the f*ck up.

New Topic: Your literary influences.

So, I'd say I'm probably most influenced by

Charles Dickens

Victor Hugo

H.P. Lovecraft

James Patterson

And the guy who wrote Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island.

That sounds more reasonable. tounge.gif

Other writers don't influence me one bit though really, I just write about whatever I wanna read, and that's about the brunt of it. tounge2.gif

I've got some favourite writers. Not os much influences, as that'd entail me actually writing something, but writers who I find pretty good. I've read a fair bit of James Patterson's stuff from my Dad's hand-me-down books that I read when he's done; they're pretty damn good. Also getting into the kind of narrative stuff, I think it's called stream of consciousness narrative, maybe? Stuff like On the Road, Catcher in the Rye, which I've read in the past few weeks. I'd like to write something like that sometime.

Also, Shutter Island's being made into a film, I think, coming out pretty soon. Directed by Scorsese. Never read the book though, just seen that mentioned on some site. May have to pick up a copy sometime though.

I went in Waterstones for it, they said all old copies have been taken off the shelf until the new versions, with the film's release. Since the film's been delayed, the book may be too.

But seriously, just finished Fable 2 and I'm honestly thinking of writing some good ol' fantasy. Back in the day I wrote some runescape fanfics.

Runescape, so many fanfic possibilities, hell, get 'em up and I'll read 'em. Firstly, admit they're already written! biggrin.gif

I got this idea when I was away on holiday of a serial killer who stalks his prey for up to months to learn their routine and kill them and have written this short bit up in the past hour or so. I only seem to be capable of writing on my laptop, or any computer for that matter, late at night when my eyes are stinging with tiredness. Writing on notepaper works better for me, for some reason.

Lynette Cole is washing the dishes. I know this because I’m sitting in my car, a fairly battered T-reg Polo, parked over the road and just up the street. In about five minutes she’ll pop her head around the front door; not wanting to expose any passers-by to her body wrapped in just her dressing gown, and collect the milk from the doorstep. She has already waved goodbye to her children from the same window where she now washes the dishes. Her husband left an hour or so before she awoke. She’s removed her wedding ring and placed it on the windowsill so as not to lose it in the soapy water if it fell off. Her children are walking to school, perhaps there already, and will not return until about four o’clock this afternoon. Between then and now, Lynette will busy herself about her home. She won’t pop out to the shops as she did that yesterday and will not need to go again for another few days.

Her children will return home to find their mother sat at the kitchen table presiding over today’s newspaper and with her fingers wrapped around the handle of her cup of coffee. Her throat will be cut and her woollen, white polo neck jumper will be soaked with blood. Chopped pieces of carrot will lie upon a thick wooden board beside which will be a knife, about twelve inches in length, lined with blood; evidently the murder weapon. I first met Lynette when filling my Polo up with petrol. She was in front of me in the queue to pay. That was a week ago.

It's probably riddled with grammatical errors and tense switching, as I can't quite get my brain working and have never really understood where to place semi-colons in my writing. The short, choppy sentences are intended, but I think I might've overdone them, perhaps?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Okay, I'm going to admit it, I'm not going to finish my Zelda story nor will I ever finish my other stories nor make any new stories simply because I'm not that good story writing at all. So there you have it, no more sh*tty ass, unfinished stories for me. I'm going to stickwith visual arts instead.

@ Mark: That excerpt is stellar. mercie_blink.gif I don't usually like serial killer stories but that kept me reading till the last word and made me want to continue reading more of it. I hope you're able to finish and post that one! As for the grammatical stuff, as far as I can tell, everything's perfect. icon14.gif

@ Seth: sad.gif Don't be so hard on yourself. You should see all the stuff I wrote for the first year or so I got into writing, there's a sh*tload of pieces, all completely crap, ranging from tantamount to summaries and scripts (and these were narratives lol.gif ), but you can clearly see the writing evolving and looking and sounding more polished as you read the latest ones. If you genuinely like writing, keep at it, you'll evolve naturally and that'll shape up your skills better than any critique you may receive. icon14.gif

Well, I've not shared much on The Devil's Menagerie with many here, nor do I intend to excluding a select few, but I figure I'll give ya'll a heads up anyway.

I just finished the first chapter, and it came out to exactly 12 pages in size 12 Bell MT font/single spaced, 5,316 words, and 24,973 characters w/o spaces. So, now I've done the more 'tedious' first chapter, I can get to the fun stuff. I'm really proud of myself, I mean, I know I've got a long way to go for my final goal, but I've spent a long time researching/writing/editing/revising, and I'm proud of the first result. cool.gif

Now I know how most of you feel all the time. biggrin.gif

Hey, thanks for the kind words on my Reich idea. I don't want to stir sh*t anymore (perhaps you don't like me posting me ideas and not writing?) but I am still finding it difficult to pin down my ideas into something that really works as a story and not a jumbled heap of random excerpts.

They'll be schoolgirls, French fighter pilots going down in flames, sh*ts, sperm, shaving accidents mutilation of food, people eating mutilated food and f*ck knows what else I conjure up. It's coming soon.
