Me and El Zilcho are in the final stages of making Build Up Your Army, and right now, I'm waiting on him to reply back on the PM I sent him. Anybody want to join this? It's like BUYG, only it's set in 2018, and we have militaries instead of criminal enterprises. The main focuses are on a cold war between the USA and China, a Russian Civil War, and a Middle East conflict that will lead to World War III.

I'll be joining for sure.

Right now at the moment, I'm really inspired on writing a story based on the experimentations and testings of an extreme research facility, narrated as diary journals, from scientists and other folks and such. There will be a few spinoff characters in this one. I'm currently working on it right now, pretty good so far, is what I can say. I think I'll actually be able to come out with this one. The only [mini] series I'll able to pull through with, besides P&B and WTTE. I've failed, or couldn't continue with others such as Wretched Face, My Good Outfit, and some pieces that hadn't even left past the first draft (Suburbian Bloodshot. Rodney Slugline. and that one I think I titled Round the World?)

BUYA sounds promising. Though I wouldn't use so many factions/countries/whatever (at least not to begin with) otherwise the story won't be as tight as it should/could be. Less is more in this case.

That aside, would it be amateurish to introduce two characters in the same [story's opening:] sentence? What I've got doesn't look nor sound too bad, but still; it's not my finest story opening. I can think of others but I'm not sure if I can muster up the energy to actually write them, and I'm getting sick of waiting for my muse to come back to me. I want something done now. tounge2.gif

Just so I don't forget and I can come back to it:

A group of three crew members aboard a spaceship wake up and find they have no knowledge of their mission or their identities. Using what limited access they have to the diaries and logs aboard their craft, they must work out who they are, where they're from and what they're doing.

Might sound a bit bland, but it's inspired by a film I'm currently following on message boards. Who knows, maybe it'll come out at the same time I write this.

Anyone remember the OG Nig Nog thread where everyone posted their own version of the words of a message left on a message machine by OG Nig Nog? I wrote one as well and (it's probably been a year since we did that) just now made an audio version. I don't sound like myself as I f*cked with the pitch to make me sound more black but it's me. Check it out. I posted it some weeks ago in the youtube thread.

Damn Lochie, you beat me to talking about an actual novel. Personally, I don't know if I can read Cormac's stuff because he doesn't use anything to indicate speech. It is basically the only thing I get pissed off about when reading. I would love to read his stuff, and there is a trailer out for The Road now. Here it is. Looks f*cking sweet, though I don't know how well it will match up to his book.

I recently read Darkly Dreaming Dexter which was pretty good... but I definitely like how the story was changed in the show. Just certain things work a lot better I think.

In addition, I read the Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne a few weeks ago and it was pretty good. It assuredly establishes a dark fantasy tone for the new game coming out later this year.

Currently I'm reading The Last Wish, aka the first Witcher book, and it is definitely really sweet. I'm probably at page 100 at the moment, I've been watching the extended LOTR and playing loads of Oblivion, and that has kept me from reading a lot of it.

If there is one thing that has happened from reading all of these fantasy books, plus watching and playing such things, it has given me an idea of something to write.

Also, I'm still planning on posting the updated version of The Harlot and that new story in the grocery that I mentioned before. Just been preoccupied.

We've completed the Factions list, and the weapons are finished too. The story is coming, and I'm considering any feedback left here.

Anyone's welcome, it isn't a club (despite the misleading title!) it's just a place to kick back and discuss any writing ideas, etc. So yeah, post away.

Okay, so I've been working on a fanfic that is a sequel to the 2008 Turok. Now I've been working on the story lately and I've just written chapter 2. Now I've already came up wtih ideas for bosses but I wanted to make the story be more interesting so I need more boss ideas.

I wish I could help a little more with feedback, but I've never read Turok, so the story is a mystery for me. But just write as you feel you should, and if you like it, then there are no problems. icon14.gif

Actually Turok is a video game although I wish there was a novel based on it.

And while you're there, get me a drink. Unless this is one of those youth clubs..

But yeah, I'm lazy. I have all this sh*t starting soon, I have to interview people for Multiplay Monitor before Thursday and I'm trying to fit in writing some stuff for Used Banana Box. Not bad things, I quite like interviewing the people. I might get back to interviewing people for the Express soon enough.

Currently, I am reading Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. It's a summer read for my "Capitalism: Foundations and Functions" class I will be taking this coming Fall. So far, it is a great read. I like Rand's writing style and her take on socialism as well capitalism in the forms of certain characters. The book is especially interesting because many of the themes of BioShock, the video game, are taken from Atlas Shrugged so I find it a relevant read as I am anticipating the release of the next BioShock game.

I also purchased a book called The Mammoth Book of Crime Comics which is an anthology of noir/crime comics from some of the best and most well-known authors. I am especially anxious to read Mickey Spillane's character of Mike Hammer who is said to be a brutal, hyperviolent character who has inspired graphic novelists such as Frank Miller.

On another note, due to lack of feedback on my untitled Western project I might pull the plug on it in the next few weeks. I enjoyed writing it, as evidenced by the the length of each episode which ranged somewhere between 8-10 pages on MS Word. I feel like there was not enough interest unless I happen to see some within a week or so. As far as my next project, I am leaning towards a noir/crime sort of thing at the moment. It all depends on how my interest in it will be.

Damn, I should really read more! Guess I've become quite lazy myself too, and reading a book, is always beneficial to the writing skills. Any recommendations, any books that have really hit you hard, things you remember for a long time, for example?

Hmmmm, things that have really hit hard. Well one of the Non-Fiction books that have hit hard is King of the World. I do not remember the author. It is a book about a moment in Muhammad Ali's career, not a biography. It is about how his fight with Sonny Liston was the pivotal "make or break" point in his boxing career which led him to become the icon that he is. It explains that Liston was just a monster and knocked out the then-heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson in just two or three rounds. He was basically sort of like the Mike Tyson of his day (Mike Tyson in terms of strength and brutality not exactly in terms of KO time). Then it tells how Ali just made his career by basically defeating a juggernaut.

Fiction-wise, I'd say this detective novel Bleeders as well as Jack Kerouac's On the Road are both great reads for me. I cannot remember who wrote Bleeders, I got it long ago from my local library.

You guys need to check out some Nietzsche. Really interesting stuff... some of his latter work was out there, but his earlier sh*t is class.

Ayn Rand's novel... I'm 300 pages in Atlas and can't pick it back up. I enjoyed it, but it's too much for me.

Reading it is more out of necessity than enjoyment yet its one of those rare finds in required reading where i actually enjoy it. That's what pissed me off in High-School English class more than anything, the boring literature you have to read. Nathaniel Hawthorne's Romantic-era classic, The Scarlet Letter. It was the most boring thing I have ever read in my life. I mean it might have been exciting in its time and place but now it's all stuff kids snooze through in high school. No wonder kids hate taking English. The only two good pieces of literature I read in high school were 1984 and Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men everything else was dull, centuries old literature. Oh yeah, The Odyssey was good too because it was an adventure and not a book about the life and times of an adulteress in the 1600s.

I've always been interested in reading some Charles Bukowski, never got around to picking up a book of his though. I am always side tracked by the graphic novels section.

I actually totally agree with you? Beowulf? f*ck that. The Oddysey? Puke. Of Mice and Men was totally absorbing.

-EDIT- I actually just wrote a third flight for Claude In "So Many Birds Are Flying" if anyone is interested. I haven't posted it yet as I'm extremely f*cked up right now, but I'm going to proofread it and post it sometime. There's a pretty strong chance that it'll be the last entry in the series so check it out, yah bastads!

I actually had an interest in Beowulf and The Odyssey because they were adventure stories. Huckleberry Finn was alright. There was something about Of Mice and Men that really captured my attention, maybe it was foul language in a sophomore year read and the dialects and the violence. Or perhaps it showed me a side of America I had never thought imaginable, the fruit farms in California. I can't put my finger on it.

I am thinking of re-working Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer character and making him more brutal, violent and adjusted for the 21st century in a little fan fiction. Although I find that the re-working of classics in certain lights are lame, it is a comic strip/novel character just as Superman or Batman, that has been re-worked to fit in with the changing times. I am kind of teeter tottering with the idea of leaving him in the late-40s/early-50s or just going into 2009 with characters appropriate for the times. If I do leave him in the late-40s/early-50s I will probably make drastic changes to his character just as Frank Miller did with the Batman franchise with "The Dark Knight" series.

I haven't written anything in a long time and I somewhat hate myself for it. I got my computer back yesterday so I'm in a bit more of a comfortable setting - though that hasn't helped to nudge my writer's block. I'm considering write a script for a short horror film or maybe a horror story in general, though that would probably be a long way off coming to existance.

Oke, I have posted this in the Writers' Ideas topic, but that was locked. So I have to post this again, I changed it a little to tell more about the story.

This is the basic idea:

Tom had escaped from his hometown too Vice City for an unknown fact you will get to know when it is near the end. After seven years, he comes home one day and he finds his house trashed and his wife killed, there's a note that says that "now they're even". The player doesn't know who writes it and the first thing the main character does is get back on the first flight to his hometown to get revenge, the things is only two people now why he left, and the Main Character is one of them.

The Unvirginiser (Will) said on MSN that he liked the idea and that hopefully it's going to be as good as it sounds. (Jeah mate, your exact words, my MSN log never lies. tounge.gif )

grtz

I had and still do have this idea for Used Banana Box. It's gonna be seperated into different sections, with links on the first post to the short stories. Not original, but the stories will make up for that. Some will be series, some one-shots, some poems if I can improve on them, some just grumpy musings about various things in life. I just need to write it now..

So I'm going for the science fiction niche. I know it's unhealthy to corner yourself in and put yourself in an inbox tray but it's something I quite enjoy. I was in Waterstones (popular book chain for those interested) and looking at the science fiction, just having a good look at titles, authors and series. Obviously, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter leaped out but I'd like to hear more science fiction authors if anyone has any they'd care to share, along with any specific book I should read.

So far, Time Ships by Stephen Baxter has grabbed my attention, seeing as it follows time travel and is actually a sequel to the popular franchise of The Time Machine. I hope it holds a candle to what H.G Wells offered.
