'Fraid to Fly?

Recommended Posts

Slamman

With the word of the fatal plane crash pilot error coming out and so many seemingly close calls, are you more afraid to get on a plane then in any time in the past?

The pilot of the plane that crashed I believe, in NY, he had failed several instruction tests for the plane he was flying, he also had some other mistakes prior to the flight. The error was caused because the plane, on auto pilot, aimed it's nose down to gain altitude. The pilot, lacking the skills, over adjusted by pulling up the nose of the aircraft.

I've not flown on aircraft for over 20 years so I would not be able to say for sure if I have a fear, but I tend to only like driving, unless I get tired doing that on long trips.

I'd like to fly in a plane actually, I've been in helicopters but never a plane.

I've taken long-distance boat rides to get around the world pretty much, I guess it was more convenient for me at the time.

I just went to Bangkok last week with my family and friends i'm quite used to flying because I've travelled to quite alot of places but I still felt quite nervous on the plane though.

Statistically, travelling by aircraft is very, very safe. So, no - I not 'fraid ter fly.

I love to fly and it is the safest means of travel possible, not to mention the fastest. The chances of something going wrong on a plane is so slim it's almost non-existent.

And they weren't kiddin' when they said you made a lot of topics. wow.gif

I've never flown on a long distance plane before, only down to the South Island. But I've watched so many Air Crash Investigation shows that I've given myself a fear of flying.

I'm more afraid of travelling in cars to be honest, especially some of the ways my mates drive.

Even some bus drivers have had run ins, and hidden things on their records when hired, however, I think with air travel they should step up the safety. Seems alot gone wrong in recent years, while the customers have to put up with more hardship just to fly these days. I think the safety inspection/screenings, etc. Needs to be more stringent.

It appears a lot of people still do fly, sometimes I find it strange it's in the news so often.

Compare that with car crash statistics though?

It's in the news more often because air crashes are likely to cause multiple fatalities. I'm sure you've heard the saying: "If it bleeds, it leads" - basically meaning that news stories that involve lots of death and destruction are put in more prominent places.

If you really look at police media releases and stuff like that, there are far more motor vehicular accidents than there are plane crashes. Hell, there could be upwards of five accidents every morning in my city.

I've never been on a plane my entire life for the last 24 years. Had my first opportunity 4 years ago for a trip to Vietnam but pulled out...considering giving it a try at the end of this year with my gf. Hope I pull thru alright.

Also, I've never been on any amusement rides either...just goes to show how freaked out I can be... blush.gif

In terms of an amusement park ride, there are many related to the rollar coaster I won't go on. I've been the passanger in a fast motor car, it's an entirely different feel to that of when you're driving behing the wheel. Sometimes it can be a hoot, like when my friend Jeremie was driving my Firebird to work, got it up to 130Mph that time!! First time and only time I'd gone that fast before!!

However, he has a problem with road going semis, and I don't.

The past week or two I was nearly rammed by a guy cutting across an intersection against the light. I wasn't too worried because I was in my Firebird. I knew I could drive out of this guys way in the time frame, but still it was a very narrow escape!

I've been on loads of plane rides to places growing up and recently about 4/5 in december and such. The first time I'd gotten on one as a kid I was too excited to even think about the bad things that could happen. The only time I get slightly worried is when your already in the air and you get some turbulence from the wind/rain/the general height. But after that, I don't think anything of it.

It's kinda freaky if you haven't flown in a while, but after a bit it's a great experience, especially if you've got a window seat! ph34r.gif

I remember coming home from Sicily, i had one of the worst stomach aches ever. The crappy food served didn't help either.

The demand for pilots is higher than supply. Pretty much the only way to fix that is if the govt starts paying for flight courses. I knew several future pilots at my university, and they are going to accumulate an extra $100k in debts after getting their full commercial license, which still isn't sufficient to fly for air lines without additional training. There are a lot of people who are willing and capable of becoming pilots, but they simply cannot afford it.

Hm, I remember going to the GC in 2007, and on the "radio" the only song that played was Christina Algulera - Hurt.

A sad, slow song, and all I could think of was the plane crashing, coz it kept shaking. And at the start of this year, I went to Melbourne, and I wasn't as scared then, coz I hadn't watched Air Crash Investigation for agez

I have only been on an airplane twice, a total time of 5 hours. The ride was smooth, so I don't have any fear of flying....yet!

I think fear is created in your mind when you have had a particularly bad experience, more so if it's your first time flying. Some people are fine until they have more than one bad experiences. Even a slight rough weather is enough for some people to shake their faith in air travel.

The cost is ridiculous... I'll be going to a university this fall to start a 4 year program in Science & Aviation, earning both a degree, and a PPL/CPL along with the ratings.

It's going to cost me roughly.... 160 thousand Canadian dollars including residence. My debt life is going to be a living hell.

That is insane. £92,741.62, or 13,687,036 Yen. You would think that they would want people to become pilots, but with prices that high, maybe not...

By the way: 160,000.00 Canadian dollars = 5,273,547,574,351.04 Zimbabwe dollars.

Because of prices of getting a commercial licence and an ATPL licence and the fact I'd love to fly different types of aircraft, I've decided to go through the R.A.F. They can pay for my training and if I do decide after 15 years of service to join an airline, chances are I'd be priority when it comes to a job at an airline rather than a fresh graduate out of university/training.

Just like me...

Actually I can't understand why people are scared of flying and not of traveling by car or bus for example, it's much more dangerous than flying imo.

In Australia you don't need to go to uni to know how to fly a plane. It's more vocational, done through flight schools with theory and practical subjects, but sure as hell not a full blown uni degree. Licenses still cost a bundle, though.

I've flown domestically in India and I still get on planes without a worry in the world. Enough said.

Last time I checked, it was about $AUD50,000 for a commercial license in Australia.

You can do that in US/Canada, but you'd have hard time getting to fly for airlines. If you want to fly business or cargo, though, then yeah, you can just get all your licenses this way. Besides, I would imagine that Australian CASA regs are not very different from these of FAA/JAA. They were all sort of based on each other, primarily because of international flights.

One more thing that some people do is join the military. You'd spend the same 4 years learning to fly, and then about as much serving. There is still some certification to go through afterwards to become a commercial pilot, but you get all your hours counted in, and that's the expensive bit.

I'm trying to get a PPL, by the way. Have almost no fly time, though. Need money.
