Each router has a different way of setting up your NAT. Go to your router's website and look for directions on how to do it.

Or you could always try http://tinyurl.com/8bfel.

Good luck!

I can help, i am at work now but i will post the ports you need to open. You can also find it at the Rockstargames site. I also struggled with NAT too stright but after these ports were open it worked. And ignore the ports mentioned on this forum, that didnt work for me either. Use the ports as written by Rockstar themself.

I have the same problem... but in my case things are even worse. My conection pass through 3 different routers so it is virtually impossible to foward the ports. But the problem is only when I try to join in someone's game. I got disconected or/stick waiting alone on the lobby.

When I'm the one who starts the game, things go well and I can play without fear of get disconected. Maybe it works with you too.

I'm having trouble trying to connect with friends online. I've checked the NAT status settings and it says "OPEN". And the same to my buddy that I've tried connecting with but with no success.

I have an ADSL modem connect with a wireless router. Obviously the router is causing this problem. I will visit RockStargames site and have a read in regards to ports blah blah blah and get back to you guys.

P.S. Can someone give me the actual URL to RockStarGames port section? Tried Google but getting BLEH

@DneroJohnson - You make a good point about using Youtube as a guide. Makes learning easier. Can you pass the link over for which clip you saw on Youtube?

Regarding the ports, does it matter what console your using? I use PC. Had a browse on Google earlier but disregarded it coz it involved the 360 console and they said to enter a certain number into the port...was something along the lines of 30XX...can't remember the last 2 digits. I could be wrong anyway...

Ok. Thx, I've checked youtube for portforwarding for my router. All I need (and the rest of those above) is the ports from RockStarGames. Any ideas/links for ports?

Everything depends On the Ping of your internet connection ! More the ping worst is your internet connection. Lower the ping better is your internet. In Short !

So you're saying "lower ping" = no NAT restrictions?

Some of my friends have very "low pings" and they still get the NAT message!

NAT has nothing to do with ping, a NAT is the Network Address Translation aka translating a WAN IP to a LAN IP, so basically a router

Well, this is what you can find out about NAT problems on taket2 support page.

Just copy and past:

---------------------

These are some recommendations for getting a better NAT type:

The following ports must be available to your PC (some of these were missing below):

TCP 80

UDP 88

UDP 3074

TCP 3074

UDP 53

TCP 53

Make sure your router's firmware is upgraded the latest version (very important).

Unplug your router for 10 minutes and plug it back in. Some older routers degrade in performance over time until it is rebooted, similar to a PC.

Disable any firewall or other network filtering for GTA IV PC.

Enable uPnP (universal plug and play) on your router.

If you don't care about security, enable DMZ (de-militarized zone) on your router for your PC's address. This turns off all of your router's firewall features for that specific PC.

Get a router that has the "Xbox LIVE compatible" or "Certified for Windows Vista" logo.

---------------------

Ok so just as a reminder:

-open these ports:

TCP 80 - 80

TCP 53 - 53

UDP 53 - 53

TCP 1096 - 1096

UDP 1096 - 1096

UDP 88 - 88

TCP 3074 - 3074

UDP 3074 - 3074

TCP 2074 - 2074

UDP 2074 - 2074

(if at the end it still doesnt work also try these:

UDP 6672 - 6672

UDP 28900 - 28900

TCP 8001 - 8001

TCP 27900 - 27900)

-enable Upnp in router and firewall.

-grant acces to GTA IV and RGSC in your firewall.

-turn your router off (really pull out the cable for half a minute) and turn it back on.

This should do the trick.

ya, i have been having this problem over the last few days. i dont know if anything has changed, or this is related to some effort to stop spammers and cheaters.

i got a message saying my nat was too strict, and through efforts i saw here, and other places, it is now moderate. i live in a foreign country so communicating with my ISP is difficult at best.

it's still hard for me to connect to games, and i get dropped alot. it worked fine a week ago, so i dont know whats going on.

any further advice would be most welcome.

these are enough: UDP TCP 53; TCP 80; UDP 88; TCP 443; UDP TCP 3074 as trigger / public ports and its working!

Guys seriously, I honestly have no idea what you are talking about...Can someone make an easy guide for noobs because all this computer talk helps me none

There is no catch-all guide for this generally, because each manufacturer (D-Link, Fios derivative, Cisco etc) provides their own configuration pages / terminal commands etc.

But it sounds like you're not even sure of the context itself so maybe if you did it'll "click" and you'll have a better go.

Amoung many other things they do, an external router "routes" inbound and outbound internet traffic (packets) to one or more computers using an IP address representing the computer, either inside the firewall (lan / local to your house network) or externally (wan / the internet or network outside the scope of your lan).

This thread is talking about configuring the router to open up certain ports and route the traffic on those ports to specific computers. Traffic goes in and out on ports. By default most routers only have a limited set of default known ports enabled for traffic with all other ports disabled to protect you from external threats.

With that context in mind, they are talking about opening up ports needed by the game so data (packets) are no longer blocked by the router and therefore reaches the computer where the game is running, allowing it to function for online play.

So, you need to use what-ever configuration page(s) are provided by your particular router model to do this. If you don't have a manual for the router, and you can't locate a PDF or other digital manual online for your specific router model, then consult your ISP site, likely forums related to configuring the routers they provide. Or if you purchased the router yourself you should have a similar option from the manufacturer website.
