Well... I made the jump to 7! I did an in-place install over my Vista Home Premium install.

Going to set up a few things, but it looks like for the most part everything is intact icon14.gif

Fyi, it took about 3 1/2 hours with probably like 200 programs installed.

edit:

First thing I have to say is, and I had this problem before, is the stupid Jump List thing when pinning folders. Instead of allowing you to pin an individual folder to the task bar and let it be it's own icon, it forces it to pins the "Libraries" folder and puts the folder you pinned in a "Jump List" which forces you to right click the Libraries icon THEN click the folders at the top of the list. Bull sh*t. I may as well just use the friggin desktop.

So instead I was forced to set up a toolbar like in Vista, which somewhat negates the space saving implemented in the new taskbar. But it works.

In the 7100 build they have fixed the problems I had with WMP, all my videos play. And they've optimized the space usage. Instead of having constant, giant player buttons at the bottom of he video they fade away when you mouse off the screen. Basically allows the video to fill the whole screen with out have to go to full screen. Which is great because WMP won't stay on Full Screen when playing a lot of video games.

And my computer seems quicker over all. My RAM usage is up higher than normal (in Vista) at 65% right now though, before on the 7000 build it would sit just over 40%. However, there's a good 10 less processes (than Vista) going on at boot up. Again, that's higher than the 7000 build. I think the older build was around 45, right now it's at 60 or so.

I would like to do an in place of the 7100 build but because my laptop came with Vista I don't have an install disc for when the time expires.

Is there anything I can do?

Windows 7 is looking very promising indeed. I've got the 64bit downloaded and waiting until I've cleared the 250GB Harddrive onto the 1TB, and I'll dual boot between Windows7 and Vista x64.

I am no pro about this stuff, but you could image your hard drive or the WINDOWS folder, and when Windows 7 expires, put the image back on. Of course, there would be things you should do beforehand, but as I said, I am no pro, and this might not work at all rolleyes.gif.

EDIT: I completely forgot about dual-booting lol.gif. Great idea, Enjoii.

Well for one thing, your laptop should have come with a DVD for Windows.

Anyway, you could just set up a dual-boot. I don't use Vista but from what I believe that it has a much easier set-up for dual-booting than XP does, and I managed to do it on XP without a problem. Or, as Edmachine said you could make an image of your current installation using something like Norton Ghost and then keep that for when Windows Seven expires. (Bear in mind that I have not used Norton Ghost, or any mirroring tool before so I'm purely speaking from what I have read here.)

Bloody useless Windows...

I'm using the 64-bit version of Windows 7 RC1 and I've got a Belkin G+ MIMO wireless adaptor (F5D9050) so I tried the Windows XP 64-bit drivers... no luck. I've tried the Windows Vista 32-bit drivers (no 64-bit Vista drivers exist) which doesn't work either.

Though it used to work when I had Windows 7 Beta build 7000. dozingoff.gif

Edit: Sorted.

Does the new RC support accessing other hard drives? That was the only complaint I had with the beta and I hope they finally fixed that.

Is the RC the 7100 build? That's the one I'm using. And yes it does recognize all of my drives. So did build 6801 and 7000 though. Although I did have to go to Disk Management and assign a drive letter to one of my drives on each of them. That's probably all your probably is/was.

@poopskin, no way they'll give it away for free.

Yeah, unless you're in the MSDN I don't think you'll be getting a free copy, even if you were in the beta program.

But then again there are always other ways to get Win7 for free...

Damn. now i'm gonna have to blow my christmas money on 7. i don't see why they're developing it so soon, vista hasn't given me any problems. (No, you can't blame PSU fail on it.)

I just installed 7 where Ubuntu used to be, and I'm liking it already. I'll definitely be blitzing Vista and upgrading to 7 as soon as the full version comes out.

Oh wow I never thought of that, always thought it was a security feature or they hadn't finished that part of 7 yet. Thanks.

Nobody is forcing you to upgrade. Your school may be part of a student discount program though, I can get Vista Ultimate for £49 (If I wanted to, which I don't).

They still use XP. Makes sense too, Vista probably runs like ass on 1gb of RAM.

My school's network OS is Windows XP Professional SP3, but Vista Ultimate is offered at a student discount. As for ass on 1GB RAM, most of the computers at our school now have more than 1GB, but there are still some systems left from the late 90's with Pentium IIs. They are only in one room, but run like ass with XP. The only ones slower than that are about 6 in another room that aren't even on the network and have 98 wow.gif

They need to put either 98 or 2000 on those P-iis! my school is still on SP2, and my mom is convinced upgrading to SP3 will kill her computer.

Anyway, the speakers on the zombie aren't working. Wierd, i can get sound with my headphones...

Also, my screen resolution woes fixed themselves.

I upgraded fully to Vista, but I have been having problems with firefox, I will click off to AIM, but then Firefox will freeze and I can't click anything. Even at random this will happen.

Happened twice writing this, anyone got a fix or know why?

Are you talking about upgrading to Vista, or Windows 7? I'm assuming you accidentally said Vista.

Either way, I've never had that problem.

One problem I've had is my keyboard went out twice. Just stopped working. The lights worked, but the keyboard did nothing. A few weeks ago while I was still running Vista I completely unplugged everything from my computer and my keyboard stopped working on boot so I've had a PS/2 board plugged in sitting on the side. Point is, I'm not sure if the keyboard not working is a Windows 7 problem, or a hardware/driver problem.

Just literally days ago, this week it was in the news on local TV. Reported that MS is soon to release it, so it's as good as confirmed!

Vista wasnt that bad, for the time I used it (about a month). I might be getting a new PC soon, that will come with vista, but then 7 will come out. I hope they give a discount or a free upgrade depending on when you activate/register your vista or something.

Yeah I meant 7, my bad.

But I seem to have fixed, just have to shut off Avast! for a little while.
