Slamman 130
George. W. Bush said once "I have a dream that people and fish can live in peace together" I've always been curious as to what the context of that quote was. I'm guessing he was at his ranch and recreating, but then again, he flubbed many a statement he made! I use this REAL CLASSIC all the time in regular speech, while, mostly to myself, but still comes up with little prompting. D- Ice 468
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people." - Karl Marx That is actually so true - from my experience most religious people are people oppressed/broken, and take the only means to fix their problems which seem to have no end is to do those worthless rituals in order to reaps a much deserved rewardin the afterlife - whether that be heaven or reincarnation into some carefree animal or something. It is also an attempt to redeem their own person as they know they are lacked and are still lacking in something which they either do not want or cannot change. "If we don't play God, who will? " - James D Watson That is something else that never ceases to piss me off. We were having a similar discussion in a medical ethics kinda small-goup discussion/seminar and the girls I was kinda trying to date comes up with something like "I believe it is wrong for us to pay God". Being the hot-headed arab I am, I prompty replied with something like: "I'm seeing my fellow country members being butchered by terrorists in the name of God, yet he is doing nothing to stop it. Surely if he can sink Sodom and Gamorah, it wont be past hi to somehow block the borders so they stop pouring in from Pakistan and Iran. I'm also seeing people starving to death in Africa? Why isn't the God who turned 1 fish into 500 for a bunch of generally well-fed Palestinians so they believe in his on not doing the same for millions of starving Africans, vitually all being loyal followers of him, to save their lives? If he really enjoys being worshipped that muh, surely it's a good investment to increase their lives so they can worship him for longer." She replied with the whole "I believe God works in mysterious ways, and it is caused by humanity's own evil - God is does not get involved in solving that." "Then if God works in mysterious ways and doesn't get involved, then surely geneticists aren't playing God - they aren't doing anything mysterious, and they are involved to help humanity." I say. After being told that it is a good arguement and that some people still believe that it is wrong to give ourselves the power similar to God in changing/meddling with things. I am safe to say that we never ended up properly dating, nor would she ever consider hanging around me too much. "Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. " - Steven Weinberg This is truth. I hate it when some religious people claim it is religion that causes people to do good deeds - without it we all all be degenerate typed like the people in Mad Max films, or the Raiders in Fallout 3 or something. There will always be good people doing great things, and bad people doing evil - hell - loads of the evil in the world today is being done in the name of religion, as well as many of the good. Remember: "Behaving well from a fear of god is far less noble than behaving well because it's the right thing to do." People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within. -Ramona L. Anderson A man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he begins to blame somebody else. -John Burroughs "If you want to know someone's true personality, just watch them drive." Slamman 130
Life's a Beach...and then you Swim! haha I love the one that ALMOST caught on as a catch phrase,... the later comedies with Walter Matthau, basically his character in Grumpy Old Men would say "Eat My Shorts!!" Instead of cursing, this is actually fun to say because you envision him saying it, and it just puts a grin on your face. ^I am bothered by those Satanic Athiest quotes earlier. Xeon 0
^I am bothered by those Satanic Athiest quotes earlier. Get a good idea of Christianity before you rail against it. It's good, not bad...the whole concept is based on Love....something the world lacks.^ As you should get a good idea of Atheism before calling it "Satanic". It really has nothing to do with worshipping the devil, or anyone for that matter. Telling people to learn more about a belief while making such an ignorant comment towards another is a bit hypocritical. Some Epictetus quotes: "Do not seek to bring things to pass in accordance with your wishes, but wish for them as they are, and you will find them."
