Fallout: New Vegas

Perhaps you're under the impression that the graphics of the day somehow limited the art direction choices they had. That's wrong. Sure, many games of the era relied on some degree of stylization to help deliver the figurative realism they were going for - look at games like The Last Express, for example, where a line-art approach is taken, but the characters are still realistic in both proportion and depiction.

Fallout, on the other had, has a very decidedly cartoonish take on the art direction. No, it's not f*cking Super Mario, but it's obvious that they weren't going for photo realism.

Check out these characters. If you think they were meant to appear anatomically correct, your steady diet of mushrooms and acid has finally gotten to you.

There's obvious cartoonish deformities there. It was an intentional decision, not a limitation of the graphical engine (these were all pre-rendered, and could have been produced in any fashion for any desired look)

One of the widespread effects of nuclear fallout: all old men sound the same.

What the f*ck does that even mean!? Seriously, you act like you're f*cking king of the world around here. If you didn't know - the development of Fallout was on a mediocre budget so Black Isle/Interplay couldn't pay f*ck-loads of money towards the graphics alone. THEY FOCUSED ON THE GAMEPLAY, something Bethesda seemed to have forgotten in making games.

One last thing: Mutants are meant to be f*cking green, not yellow ogres with shrek clothes and chainmail armor who eat people and hang gore bags and human bodies up all over their hideouts. They also used to have at least a minimal degree of intelligence, now they have none at all, just: "Let's eat people!!!! RARGH!!!" Realistic my f*cking ass. Not to mention that every single voice in the whole f*cking Capital Wasteland is the same, and the facial structure, it's all the f*cking same. You're as bad as f*cking Daz, and that's saying something.

End of this f*cking stupid discussion, I think you're a f*cker, you think I'm a f*cker but we'll disagree all day if one of us just doesn't shut the other f*cker up.

This is probably the most times I've used the word f*ck in a single post.

Everyone! Calm down! Be happy! Relax!

Let's fight the Good Fight together, for the children (except those pricks in Little Lamplight. They can f*ck off.)

Reconite, why do you always have to flip out when someone says they don't like Fallout 1 or 2 for whatever reason? Jesus christ, nobody cares.

Still awaiting solid news on New Vegas anyhow.

Ron Perlman for cameo, I think.

I did get a little sick of the voices in FO3 after a while.

Bethesda can't seem to realize this needs fixing, and not just in F3 (Elder motherf*cking Scrolls).

They try to justify it by hiring 1 or two big name actors. Instead of blowing money on that, I'd rather get an extra 4 or 5 no names to add a some variety dammit.

Somebody miss his Ritalin this morning?

I don't really know how to respond to all your nerd rage. It's like I've tapped into a larger argument that for some reason you feel I'm a part of. I'm just trying to tell you the artwork was not anthropomorphic, and that this was a conscious decision. Take it from a guy who works in a creative industry - work is never done to be 'good enough,' nor is art direction ever dictated by budget. (Execution, yes, but this is a different issue) We're only talking about the art here.

Finally, art choices change depending on who's in charge. I certainly wouldn't like working on a project unless I was breathing my own life into it, my own take. And you can't fault anyone for that, even if you dislike the outcome.

Isn't there a Fallout forum someplace where you could nerd out with other Fallout fanatics, Reconite? I know, I'm a f*cker.

And you mean to tell us that FO3 Super mutants look like Shrek? You're aware the Holocaust actually did happen too, right?

You're arguments would make a lot more sense if you didnt sound like a compelete moron, as the above is all I'm getting from you. I though the F3 supermutants were great, they weren't so stupid as to be unable of coordination or the usage of weapons but you could tell the virus had damaged their brain and what not. Gave them the perfect amount of stupidy imo.

As for their cloths, I agree that it's bothering that they all have the same uniform as you wouldn't except them to have closets with "medieval armor and cloth" that they give to "new recruits" but it's not so bad. I mean come on.

Just because it's better than fallout 1.

Oh, Fallout 3 has better combat and exploration. But Fallouts 1 and 2 pwn Fallout 3 in terms of story, roleplaying and stuff. Fallout 3 is still good though.

Some news :

Learned from a trusted source that Fallout New Vegas information is coming "very soon." It's going to be Gameinformer's next cover. This is the information in the magazine:

- Similar to Dragon Age: Origins, at character creation the player can select from different background stories. The first few hours of the game are different depending on which background you choose, and you get some unique perks based on your background when the main game begins.

- One background story is shown, Chinese Agent. The background story takes place before the bombs fell. The player is part of a team of Crimson Dragoons infilitrating Hoover Dam. You manage to sneak through the Americans' defenses, set explosives, and head to an extraction point, but your escape is cut off by American soldiers in Power Armor. The player and other survivors of the Crimson Dragoons take refuge in a cave in the canyons, where they commit hari kari with cyanide capsules. The player about to do the same when the bombs fall. The background story ends an indeterminate time later, when the player exits the cave, removes his helmet, and sees his ghoulish reflection in the waters of the Colorado River.

- The background story segues into character creation. The player can customize the appearance of the ghoul, and you see you start the game with two unique perks. One, similar to the Ghoul Mask in Fallout 3, makes Feral Ghouls non-aggro. The other makes the player immune to radiation sickness and allows the player to discharge accumulated radiation in a blast similar to a Glowing Ghoul, healing the player and any mutants while damaging all non-mutants in range.

- By default, the Chinese Agent has the skills Sneak, Small Arms, and Explosives tagged and SPECIAL stats set, although the player can modify their tagged skills and stats if they don't like the template.

- One character background option is Lone Wanderer. This selection has no background story or template and is a complete blank slate for players.

- The SPECIAL system used will be similar to Fallout 3, but skills will be harder to cap and one character will not be able to become a master of all skills. The article is not very specific because apparently it's something the developers are still tweaking.

- Gambling will return, but not as a skill. Your Luck stat will effect gambling results. You can attempt to cheat at cards using your Sneak skill or hack slot machines using your Science skill.

- There will be vehicles. The desert of New Vegas dwarfs the Capital Wasteland and you will need transportation to get around and explore it. You will acquire a vehicle several hours into the main quest. You can customize your vehicle with parts bought at shops or won through racing circuits and quests. Vehicles will not be common, but you will encounter road gangs, merchant caravans, and other vehicles in the wastes. The open desert is home to some very large mutant creatures, like giant radscorpions and sandworms, that will attack your vehicle.

- New Vegas has a coliseum run by a slaver gang called the Caesar's Legion. You can gamble on and participate in arena fights.

If this is all true... f*cking awesome.

I would like to see the extent of this no-capping all skills. Only skill I didn't cap in Fallout 3 was Unarmed, which I never used.

Still, if true, I agree with Papanesta.

I was thinking about this yesterday actually and seeing as i never really played Fallout 3 until February this seems to be coming around quite quickly.

Like Pap said if that info is true this game is going to be amazing, really looking forward to it smile.gif.

Yes! Vehicles! Brilliant!

It sounds like we're really in for a treat, here. Now, if only they can revamp the VATS system a bit, I'll be really f*cking excited. Aw, who am I kidding? I'm already f*cking stoked.

Oh, and I hope the mutants aren't a cartoony green, just so we can listen to Reconite squeal. wink.gif

^Heh.

Yeah, would love it if that stuff were true, but won't get my hopes up.

In any case, they should jam-pack it with more depth and variety.

The game has some good stuff, hope from me too, that this to be true.

I hope that's untrue. I don't want to be a ghoul... I went out of my way to eliminate them from the Capital Wasteland! devil.gif

Well if all that IS true, you can choose to be a ghoul or another character.

Personally, I don't think the multiple stories thing is true...or, at least, I HOPE it isn't! One of the best things about Fallout 3 was the rich back story of the Lone Wanderer.

Now there's multiple rich back stories. Win win. biggrin.gif
