the nexus modding community got this game working smoothly thank god

This was what I had to install , see list below, just to get Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition to run without CTD's, lags and stutters etc!..
I installed the following mods and fixes
FNVEdit -- A tool to clean dirty edit's file esm/esp files from modders and Bethesda, I had to cleanse all of the dlc esm files in FNVEdit from dirty edits
LOOT - a great mod sorten tool and it well tell you if a mod conflicts with another or has bad edits to it!..
Fallout Mod Manager - FOMM - Fork another sorter and it tell's you the load order number and letter of esm/esp files!..
NVAC - New Vegas Anti Crash
4GB Fallout New Vegas Updated
New Vegas Stutter Remover
Purge Cell Buffers
Better Game Performance V5 - helps with FPS and game lag issues
Yukichigai Unofficial Patch - YUP Mission Mojave - Ultimate Edition patch was better
That's nine mods, fixes and Utility tools just to get Bethesda game to run properly

You can thank Bethesda's based GameBryo engine for that.

It's amazing that Obsidian made it run as smoothly as they did seeing as they had no prior experience with it.

Ever played Bully Scholarship Edition ? GameBryo purgatory.

It's more down to Obsidian than it is GameBryo; New Vegas is the worst GameBryo title in that regard, IMO. But then, it's Obsidian we're talking about here. Buggy games have always been their forte.

GameBryo is dated and should definitely be ditched for future titles though.

As far as performance goes, I had more luck with New Vegas than Fallout 3.

With the latter, I had a pretty smooth experience, but there were specific places where the frames would drop from a constant 60 to 10.

As far as bugs go, again, New Vegas was better for me.

I feel like if I was to restart on hardcore, a stealthy thief would suit me well too. Get plenty of caps, loot and kills, if done right.

I booted up my old save from NV from a few years ago. Never beat the game, and now I'm glad I never did because it's refreshing. Been dominating the Mojave with Veronica and her handy powerfist 'Pushy'.

I have Old World Blues and Honest Hearts for DLC. I haven't touched them yet, but plan on it in the coming days, don't know if I want to keep exploring, start progressing through the story more or do the DLC.

If you wait too long to do OWB, all the enemies will become bullet sponges. Depending on your build, ammo can get a little scarce at first. The enemies become drastically stronger every tenth level so try going in at say, 36 instead of 40 (for example). Ton of great loot in this DLC.

I actually found it more fun, going primarily melee + explosives against the enemies in OWB. Also

Well it has, they use the "Creation Engine".

Sure it's a highly modified gamebryo at this point, but it's in the right direction. Though they really should get the id guys involved when it comes to the next engine.

Yeah, melee was an unexpected treat, and in a science themed DLC no less. Love that Protonic Inversal Axe. That dog gun (K-9000 or something?) eats bullets like crazy though, but can be somewhat offset with the right perks.

"You guys should try this intercom thing, it makes you sound like some sort of... sky god!"

The one thing I still clearly remember from OWB is the toaster. That was gold.

Well, some people are more lucky than others. I think they had about the same about of bugs by-the-by, but New Vegas was notorious for critical bugs; saves corrupting and so on. It was and still is bad enough that (for example), it's recommended to turn off the autosave feature to prevent it (and improves performance too, IIRC).

Don't get me wrong though. As games go, I'd have New Vegas over 3 everytime.

Creation Engine still has a lot of holdover issues from GameBryo though.

I never thought that's the case. I always imagined New Vegas to be generally much more stable. I've had countless crashes with Fallout 3. Never with Vegas. The only major bug I had was the game f*cking itself up, and not allowing me to complete a mission.

The Creation Engine is used by Skyrim, right?

Yep.

Also, I don't think I've had any major bugs in FO3 and NV(on PC, playing 3 on PS3 was really f*cking buggy). Worst thing I can remember is becoming stuck on a rock and not being able to jump out of it, and having an enemy near by that couldn't reach me and thus preventing me from fast traveling.

New Vegas on PS3 is garbage because of the save bloat. You can play like, half the content before the game slows to a slideshow.

OTOH, Fallout 3 worked near flawlessly on my PS3 until I glitched a sh*t ton of followers...that's my bad though.

I've had those moments, expect I could fast travel, so it wasn't really much of an issue for me.

As far as the engine goes, I hope they will improve on it by the time the next Fallout is announced. While certainly not bad, I think it's good game design that made the games what they are, instead of the technology behind it. I've had some moments where it felt really basic in some ways. Mostly the combat in general was quite 'meh'. I suppose they have enough tools to make it feel better, while also staying true to the RPG formula.

Just nabbed OLd World Blues in sale.

But now I'm wondering: should I play that before or after Dead Money??

As far as the story goes, I think you play those two in whatever order you want. But I always leave Lonesome Road for last, and Honest Hearts for first. OWB is better in my opinion though, but Dead Money also tells a more catching story. That is my point of view though.
