Fallout: New Vegas

Yeah, I agree with the dialogues. They seemed a bit lazy and undynamic, for instance you couldn't even tell Kodiak that you went to the Pitt despite the fact he lived there as a child ffs.

In the originals, Fallout 1 & 2, something like that wouldn't have been neglected so. At the very least, there'd be a dialogue option, though I could definitely see them making it where you could initiate a full quest (e.g. you go back to The Pitt to handle some old business for him, or maybe go with him to help the east-coast Brotherhood establish an outpost there).

Hot damn, we can have up to 3 companions rolling with us, and I won't have to expose a glitch in the game to do so. G-r-r-r-reat!

The PC Gamer US scans are up on NMA.

Great article, in my opinion. It's actually a lot more about the Fallout series in general than New Vegas itself, but it's a nice read.

EDIT: Bah! The legalities came in and they had to remove the scans... too bad, you didn't miss much new-news anyway.

*wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*

The German PC Games magazine is still the most well-informed on New Vegas so far, by the looks of it. Too bad I can't read the damn thing.

EDIT2: Info from a French magazine has popped up on Bethsoft forums.

Very funny screens, reminds me what a fun game 3 was/is. The press Y for Fore! looks intriguing, I wonder if that`s just going to be with the golf club or it`s some crazy kill command?

Each melee weapon has a unique attack, separate from the regular motions. Hopefully there'll be a much larger selection. Not sure if it's for other weapons.

Would be cool to smack fools with a rifle butt or pistol-whip them, particularly from behind and knock 'em out cold.

There's aren't much graphics improvement, I'm disappointed that they didn't learn the lesson by checking out fans' graphics mods. Their works obviously much better than Bethesda's, but I can stay with that if they fix that lame animations that is. So, better improve those simple animations and make this game more complex.

I hate the fact that they are using real world weapons.

One of the things that makes FO great is the 50s design aspect.

Well, they've had certain real world weapons since Fallout 1. And Fallout 2 really added quite a bit to that pile. There's been Desert Eagles, Revolvers, Tommy Guns for quite a while now, but I see your point, I'm not exactly sure where they're going with this Military Assault Rifle thingy. And Fallout Tactics went way off the mark with the amount of real-world weaponry.

Also, dialogue will be better.

* Dialogue should inform and entertain players -- inform them about the world and quests, entertain them with interesting characters and prose. If you aren't informing or entertaining, think hard about what you're trying to accomplish.

* Write an outline. Really. Just do it. You should have an idea of where you are going before you set out. If you don't know where you're going when you write your conversation, chances are the player is going to get lost at some point.

* Always give at least two options. At a bare minimum, you should always have an option that says, "Let's talk about something else," that leads back to a node where you can say, "Goodbye." You may think that your dialogue is riveting and no one could possibly want to stop reading/hearing it, but believe me -- someone out there does.

* Never give false options. Do not create multiple options that lead to the same result. It insults players' intelligence and does not reward them for the choices they make.

* Don't put words in the player's mouth. With the exception of conditional replies (gender, skills, stats, etc.), phrase things in a straightforward manner that does not mix a request for information with an emotionally loaded bias ("I'd like to know what's going on here, jackass.").

* Keep skills, stats, gender, and previous story resolutions in mind and reward the player's choices. If it doesn't feel like a reward, it isn't; it's just a false option with a tag in front of it. Note: entertainment value can be a valid reward.

* The writing style and structure are the project's; the character belongs to you and the world. As long as the dialogue follows project standards and feels like it is grounded in the world, it is your challenge and responsibility to make the character enjoyable and distinct.

F*ck the fact that graphics look like they're from 2004, give me this and I'll be happy.

I'm getting less and less hyped about this game each time info is released.

The non-robotic replies gave the character a lot of...well...character!

Every time new info is released there is something else from Fallout 3 that is being removed that I really liked. The long-time Fallout fans will probably jump all over my post for this but IMO Bethesda really took the game in a better direction but now that Obsidian is developing the game it seems to be going down the hill Fallout 3 just climbed up.

Graphics look the same, textures are directly copy&pasted from F3, super mutants look the same, etc.

It's Fallout 3 in a new location with random features fiddled with.

edit:

Just noticed that Sonny and Easy Pete (NV) look exactly like Amata and Breadbox (F3) respectively. That's just laziness.

Sadly, I agree with foohy. It is early to say anything, but seriously, it looks exactly like Fallout 3. Like I said earlier in the thread, I hope they don't f*ck this up. Fallout 3 was a great gaming experience for me, but if I am going to get the same look with a few tweaked things, it is not worth my money. It reminds me of a Left 4 Dead, but it took them almost less than a year to release a 'new' game. I am not trying to doubt because I will most likely get this game when it releases, but for me, there is nothing impressive I've read or seen.

I'm just pissed about the graphics. Christ, its gonna feel like we're playing DLC, rather than a whole new game. Hate the copy and pasting that's being done.

But everything sounds pretty awesome.

Yeah that's what I've been thinking too. There are no graphics improvement which make me feel like playing a modded Fallout 3, DLC or maybe a big expansion pack. That would be like we're been cheated. No complexity, we're getting same sh*t like EA Sports game. However, now is only March, which still early imo maybe those pics are only beta graphics, or first impressions. Perhaps, they will add more and more textures, add other graphics effects and so on.

Oh, to be honest: If the graphics was meant to be like this when it released. Trust me, I prefer Van Buren graphics. No joke, it might be look sh*tty to you, but I prefer changes rather than something like this. This is like an expansion pack dude. Cloned game like hell, they will only got 6-8 score in review if they manage to deliver good story, stability and quality.

Are they ever going to release screens of the actual city? Ya know, New Vegas, the city in the title? Right now all I've seen is Fallout 3: Wild West Without Horses.

It's like they made a few improvements, but still essentially created everything with Bethesda's map editor, and probably quest editor.

Even the "wheel" used to control AI partners could be easily made using existing stuff from FO3.

It's ironic because Fallout 3 was already like a huge mod of Oblivion. Except Fallout 3 had no forest of trees to render, so it ran better...

Funny how people can accept Fallout 3's graphics as a 2008 game when they look just like Oblivion's, yet go all crazy when Fallout: New Vegas uses the same.

Can you guys give it a break? dozingoff.gif

And everyone saying "IT'S LIKE A MOD OF FALLOUT 3, THIS COULD BE DONE WITH MODIFICATIONS", part of that is true, but on a whole scale it is impossible to make Fallout: New Vegas with mods from Fallout 3. The people complaining about this don't get that people who played Fallout 3 on consoles couldn't mod the game, so Fallout: New Vegas will have a better vanilla version.

It's a side step not a sequel really, and that's what it's supposed to be. It would have been okay if they called it Fallout 3: New Vegas because it's what Halo 3: ODST was to Halo 3. This isn't a sequel and I was never under the impression it was. It's a full game but at the same time it's an expansion, more of the same. The sequel will be Fallout 4, that's when things take a step forward.

If this wasn't being made we probably wouldn't have another Fallout for years until after Bethesda has done the next Elder Scrolls. It's just a bit extra and if it's just like Fallout 3 that suits me. I hope Bethesda is working on a new engine so that future games they make will be a massive improvement.

Yeah you make a good point, this game uses same engine as Fallout 3 thus of course it won't make any difference. New engine must be Fallout 4, I was just expecting too much from this game. Also, they must need more time to invent a new engine just like Rockstar did to build RAGE engine for GTA IV. There's no way they can create a new whole game in a short time after last Fallout 3. Thanks for putting some sense in my head. smile.gif

Herp derp, Fallout 2 is not a sequel to Fallout 1 because it uses the same graphics.

We're not bashing the graphics. The graphics are fine. It's the fact that Obsidian is just reusing all the textures and character models from Fallout 3 that is annoying.

When I first saw the scans for NV I thought some a**hat had just posted pics from Fallout 3. It's that bad.

Now reusing some textures and minor character models is OK as long as the game has enough original content to even it out...but NV doesn't! It looks exactly the same. Big sequels to big games have big changes. Sequels to small games have small changes.

Fallout3 is a big game! It's not a household name like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. As such, it's sequel should be a little more of an improvement that it's looking to be right now.

Yeah, though I'd prefer much better-looking/varied Super Mutants, Ghouls, etc. (Reconite can relate tounge2.gif), it's not as if I'm losing sleep over it.

Kick-ass game, it shall be.

I regard it as a spin-off rather than a sequel. When it was announced I wasn't thinking this is the next Fallout. I have it in my head that Fallout 4 will be the sequel to Fallout 3 and that this is its own thing made by a separate developer. I think from what we've seen of the game so far reflects that it's not fresh enough to be regarded as a full sequel (1&2 were similar but that was 10+ years ago when it was normal to develop a game in a year or less).
