Does the world still need religion?

Recommended Posts

General Goose

Well, if God did not write the bible, then it is just a book with a lot of lies and inaccuracies.

And historically, Christians were the "worst" major religion.

These days, a small MINORITY of fundamentalist Islamists are violent, but small groups of fundamentalists of all religions do exist and the world would be better off without them.

And yes, virtually all religions do promote tolerance and goodwill, but most holy books contain war, genocide, prejudice and more promoted by messiahs, Gods, whatever.

Honestly, I don't see the point of looking for sense in organized religion because there is none. It's all contradictory and convoluted. The vaguery of it all is precisely what makes it so powerful.

You can have one passage in so-and-so script which seems to support murder while another in so-and-so script which says killing is always wrong. So which do you choose? All sorts of arbitrary explanations are given for theological interpretations but it all comes down to the personal/political agendas of the person "interpreting", be they good or bad. And because there is so much crap in any religion that is open to interpretation, a lot of interpretations become totally insane. All you need is an idol, or prophet, or pope or otherwise benevolent, flawless leader to preach and people will follow.

Keeping people confused, keeps them ignorant, keeps them controlled.

I don't think the question should be whether we need religion or not, but whether it is innate and if it will ever end. As I see it, idolism and ideology will form in all of us regardless of what we think of organized religion specifically. We all have emotional attachments to ideas or objects and to people we've never known personally(celebrities, politicians etc). But some people just never develop a healthy sense of rationality.

If you want to quell sectarian violence, people have to be raised in an atmosphere of rationality, personal skepticism and individual thought. Even still, I think(personal opinion) that fundamentally -perhaps genetically-, some people are meant be sheep, some people are meant to be shepherds, and some people are meant to be wolves.

Forming your own set of moral philosophies and principles, based on the kind of person you are and want to be is the best way to become a better person(this is of course relative to what you think "better" means). This requires introspect and quite a bit of work. Most people cannot be personally objective enough to analyze their own life, without falling into an ego trap: comparing themselves to other people and going into a state of self-pity.

Religion offers a quick fix to everyone's personal clusterf*ck of moral conundrums. It is a much more attractive prospect for the average working person, who seeks moral convenience and is likely preoccupied with other, more immediate problems.

I just ignore religion... i dislike it to every extent.. so i do what i can to humiliate people that force it on others and just ignore it in every other aspect..

by humiliate i mean.. the people with microphones talking about god n the bible n sh*t in public.. i walk up to em and stat screaming about how satin is king lol.. and people that walk beside you telling you you're not good enough for heaven.. i just laugh and come up with a number of insults to throw back at em..

also when they hand out stuff i accept it then put it on the ground and walk off.. that pisses em off lots lmao.

its History pal, the past is the past, yeah its been a part of Christianity, AND however DO NOT consider Christianity the worse one, i mean can you say Muslims (there the other major religion) are better, just because christianity had a bad history. Honestly i can't even say Christianity was better, i only say that i don't agree on some other religions.

Morally speaking, Christianity and Islam have the worst histories TOGETHER. I'm not sticking up for either of them, they just have some really nasty followers here and there.

We do Need Religeon in My Opinion. I need somthing or somebody to look up to. Their are all these un-explained questions that i feel if i keep faith in God then one day i will know. Like does the universe ever end? If it does what's outside of the universe?

I beleive in God, Call me a Violent Person that has been Captured by Religeon, But i once violently acted against a guy after Prayers because he was messing around all the way through them. He doesn't have to beleive in God "Allah" whatever you want to call God these days, But he could at least show some respect to My friends and I.

But yes, we need relgeon in this world, Also their is the question what happens after death, I came to a wonder that if you don't beleive in a Next life you would just go to sleep and never wake up. But if you beleive you will go through to the Next Life.I don't think of it as that wonderfull playfull place called heaven where everyone thinks is happy and joyfull, But i beleive heaven is just another life.

People also think of Hell as a Bad burning Place where you get tortured and Burn iternally. I don't think of it like that, I think of it as another life, Where Karma haunts you from your previouse life, and bad things happen, Which also gives a chance for you to change your ways that you did in the Past life.

just because you dont know the answer does not make it an "unexplained mystery"

Then your belief in God is dependent on simple curiosity?

But yes, we need relgeon in this world

There is a vast difference between religion and spirituality; the key word being "we". Your statement that we need religion would be inclusive of myself, therefore you claim that I need religion. Yet I have no need, nor the desire to pick and choose from a list of limited beliefs that each have their own faults and contradictions. I see no purpose in categorizing myself with Christians or Muslims when I would only just follow the beliefs I agree with (not killing) and ignore the beliefs I don't agree with (hitting my child).

That said, the Bible is extremely vague and the fact that it's open to multiple angles of interpretation makes "The Word of God" almost entirely subjective. This is why there are multiple denominations of Christianity; one is required to decide and follow the belief that one feels is "most correct".

Why limit yourself? Why not set your own moral standards and follow them faithfully? Do we really need a book - a book that has been deciphered, analyzed, and translated differently through generations of men - to tell us what is right and wrong? We all need morals, I will give you that, but why should we push our own subjective moral beliefs onto others?

I am perfectly content with you having your own personal faith, your own spirituality, your own beliefs; regardless of whether or not I will disagree with you. It is when those beliefs are pushed onto me - through religion, mind you - that I voice out and become entirely against it.

Religion is not needed. I don't think it needs any explaining. We have non religious charities and many people do good deeds without it. Religion is used by many to sell evil ideals, whether it's from polititions in the west or extremists in the middle east.

Religion is only a part of a bigger problem with humans though. We have the ability to do amazing things, build amazing machines and amazing medicines yet 99.99% of us just sit around on ever growing piles of our own trash ignorrantly letting time slip by.

id say the world needs religion, so people could be inspired, like miracles that happened, well yeah people can do charitable works without religion . but with religion many people can be inspired to the same, besides with religion people really now know what is right and wrong. - from my view

If you truly believe the claims you make then I beg to question your views on morality. Is something moral/immoral because "God said so"? Or does God command something because it is moral/immoral?

How does believing God (which by the way, can't be definitely proven nor disproved) make you enslaved exactly?

Maybe to it doesn't exist for you, but it exists for believers. If you think religion is stupid, then think again. Imagine world without religion. And you are glad that you are free? From what? I'm sorry, but You're stupid.

This is just like aliens, some believes them, some doesn't. You can't even prove that they exist, just like about god.

I'm not sure about him but as a child, I was forced to attend several religious activities because my parents thought it was somehow going to make me better. When I started growing reluctant, my mom started bribing me with money and toys just to make me attend these activities in temples. Being a mere kid, I was easily lured by the luxuries offered to me. As I grew older, money/toys no longer mattered to me and I realised doing something that I have utmost no faith in is pointless. Growing up in a community where religious divide is so blatantly visible, my hatred towards religion grew further. For almost 2 years, my parents tried to force me to attend temples and do 'poojas' with them. They thought something was wrong with me and somebody had poisoned my mind. My mom even used to bring priests and get them to talk me into following my sh*tty religion again. It was not going to work, obviously. After a while, when they realised I wasn't going to budge from my viewpoint, they gave up. So, I'd say I'm free from those shackles.

Imagine world without religion.

I would like you to imagine the same thing. I'm unaware of what background you're from, but I don't think I need to explain to you how religion has destroyed the once harmonious community of India. The diversity has now started to bite into us because harmony no longer exists. Trust me, you would not want to live in a society where there is no harmony and as a fact, religious diversity and harmony can no longer co-exist. There are still Hindu-Muslim riots going on in the nooks and corners of the city (and this is just one city I'm talking about). Just a few months back, I read a report in the newspaper about a Hindu boy being slaughtered by a Muslim group because he married a girl from their community. Similarly, we also have stories about Hindu girls being disowned by their parents because she married a Muslim guy. These kind of things are nothing new here. Is this going to change while religion continues to thrive? No.

I'm not forcing you to give up your beliefs, but for a few moments, open your eyes and turn your attention to the countless number of problems/killings/destruction that have arisen as a result of religion. When your religion teaches you certain principles, you're supposed to apply them to everyone irrespective of any religious barriers. But this does not happen. People confine themselves to their own religion and disregard other religions as inferior. In other words, majority of the people are blinded by faith. This is not religion's fault; it's the fault in the ways in which you interpreted your religion. But then, if we backtrack our steps, every one of those problem began with religion. I'm sorry to say this, but as you cannot trust an ape with a machete, similarly, you cannot trust people with religion. Sooner or later, they'll find a way to destroy each other.

But not everyone is forced to believe in a religion though. I'm certainly not, so when people start saying you're not free if you believe in God, it strikes me as kind of odd because I believe in God yet I'm free at the same time.

How does believing God (which by the way, can't be definitely proven nor disproved) make you enslaved exactly?

It's not exactly god that's the issue when it comes to being more free. God is a philosophical concept. Personally, it is something that I think about, but not something I place emotional investment(faith) in. However, if you come to an "acceptance" of god(however you see it) on your own terms, there's nothing reprehensible about that. It is an individual conclusion, attained through free thought. No enslavement there. (That is, unless you start preaching your new-found ideology to others as if it's a fact. As if the idea came from somewhere other than your own -human- brain. Then it's reprehensible. )

It's the actual *institutions* of religion which are restrictive and controlling. They simply use god as a selling point for a bunch of ideas that are not only very human, but very archaic and convoluted. It's big business. Ultimately, god and religious institutions don't have to go hand-in-hand. But (similiar to what I said earlier), coming to personal terms with god requires effort and introspect. People like convenience. Thinking is hard. Religious institutions provide a quick, simple interpretation of god. At the expense of individual thought and with a bunch of moral strings attached.

Personally, I think the concept of god is best examined while high on mushrooms and staring at yourself in a mirror(lol). In my understanding(roughly): everyone is their own god. You are your own system of logic operating dependent of a much larger system(the physical world around us) and parallel to many other systems(other life). The physical world and nature itself can change you, but they can never control your free will. You are in charge of your own ultimate course in life. You are your own master -the only one who is truly in charge of yourself- and therefore you are your own god. That's how I think of god, it's not faith really(I have other ideas on the issue, I can change my mind and I don't care that much) but I have a certain measure of loose belief in the idea. To say I'm a slave for having thought in regards to god is simply untrue if it came about of my own volition.

Religion makes millions happy, lets them feel safe, not alone, loved and gives them hope. They donate to charity, they do work for charity, as we speak now, millions are fasting so that their consciousness of the poverty in the world is heightened.

Modern science will can't stop people from believing. I have my own reasons for knowing myself that there is something in the universe, maybe not in the same sense as in the Bible, but something.

Despite the wars, ignorance, racism and hatred, religion does a lot of good for people in the world. And for that reason I think that people need it in their lives.

wars would break out anyway. Wars happen anywhere over anything that is believed to be valuable enough to be fought Over. You know terrorists and these wars on terror, Do you think terrorists really want to make this whole world muslim for allah? ok yes they do, But they want it more for power, and polotics. Polotics mixed with religeon as an excuses to give them power.
