ScratchCard
Last time I checked Grand Theft Wiki he was born in Yugoslavia but he was raised in Serbia. That's bullsh*t. It's never mentioned in the game.
Magic_Al
Last time I checked Grand Theft Wiki he was born in Yugoslavia but he was raised in Serbia. That's bullsh*t. It's never mentioned in the game. His country is deliberately not named in the game but Serbia is the only real country that fits the story. The only way it's not Serbia is if Niko's from a fictional country. Niko is 30 years old and spent 10 years away from home before he came to Liberty City. Serbia would have been part of Yugoslavia most of the time he lived there. Edited April 18, 2009 by Magic_Al
TheHarvesteR
he is from balkan serbia he says it in a mission its romans sorrow I THINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually, he doesn't... he mentions a "bar back home" to Roman, but that's as far as it gets He's not meant to be of any specific country... R* left it intentionally so... All should need to know is that he's from Eastern Europe, possibly the Balkans When other characters call him a 'polack', it's just meant to impress the ignorance of these characters... just like the others who think he's a commie Cheers

i like coffee enemas
Niko is Serbian. This is discovered right from the get go when Niko asks Roman if he's forgotten their language, to which Roman replies "uh.. potatoes?", then yadda yadd yadda "you can speak English", to which Niko then replies "a little. not so good", which is when we find outt that Niko is Serbian when Roman says "better than my Serbian". Fnorg
Even though ex-Yugoslav languages are all pretty much the same (other than a few words) the dialects are different. When it all comes down to it, we all speak the same language, but no-one wants to admit this. Us Bosnians say we speak Bosnian, Croatians say the speak Croatian and so on. In the beginning of the game Roman says "Your English is better than my Serbian". Only Serbians speak Serbian. Sweden and Italy? Wow.
BikerAndy
He was apparently born in what used to be Yugoslavia, he speaks Serbian. When Yugoslavia broke up in the Balkan conflict it split into it's component parts of Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia. Whoever said he was Bosnian could have a point as a large number of Serbs lived in the Bosnian region and this was one of the areas hardest hit in the wars there. This would tie in pretty well with his background in the war so perhaps Bosnian Serb. Whoever said he was Swedish needs to take their head out of their ass!
