Sniper rifle range issues with IV

I was watching the XIII show on NBC a few weeks ago and suddenly got the urge to play a little simulation/reenactment in the GTAIV universe / virtual world. In the movie XIII they had a elite sniper take out a high profile individual with a Barrett M107 .50 Caliber High Powered Sniper Rifle at over a mile away with one single shot!

I thought that was so cool so I wanted to try that out myself.. So I went online looking for GTAIV weapons and levels mods.. To my surprise I didn't find ANY .. there are no weapons mods or total conversions available for this game? What? I thought the console version came out April of 2008? Anyways, not to be deterred I found some forums and dug up a little "magic"-iv and proceeded to mode the sniper in the game to try and make its ballistics and specs as close to the real M107 as possible and I was eager to snipe innocent civilians in Liberty City from way up high on one of those lofty rooftops..

To my utter surprise and shock, I could not see anything or anyone from on top of a skyscraper! I have a pretty state of the art PC and I have everything set to high, even sacrificing a few frames here and there (nothing major) to get that extra little bit of eyecandy (hey I think its well worth it!) I look down and everything is like a colorless blanket of gray! Granted I could still see the streets and make out the patterns from down below.. but there were zero cars and zero pedestrians!

So I thought maybe if I got down a bit lower it would work.. Horribly.. no such luck! I kept finding lower and lower buildings to try and snipe from but each time, no cigar! It seems that in fact I found out empirically that from any altitude higher than a one story building I was not able to even SEE any cars, or people at all (much less shoot at them LOL)... It got so pathetic that I had to eventually just try to snipe from ground level right smack on the actual streets themselves!! Even still I found out that other than police and patrol vehicles I was NOT able to snipe any drivers more than 20ft away from my camera angle (where Niko is standing, own POV, etc) and this infuriated me to no end! To make matters worse I learned the hard way that even pedestrians out on the streets started "turning into a coat of gray" at around 50ft and disappeared on me altogether at more than 100ft out!

I know there is nothing wrong with my system or setup, so I keep asking myself what could possible Rockstar be thinking or what is going on in their minds when their developers make snipers in an open ended game in which unfortunately you can't "snipe" anyone at all, except maybe at close range or arms length away!! I did some further research online and found out that in fact what I just discovered was already well documented , even on this here exact forum!!

(Peds & Drivers in Cars have 30 feet draw distance! & all grayed out at 50meters!)

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=385426

It seems R* never fixed it, never patched it, they never even admitted it was a problem and a hindered to gameplay! So much for transparency and responsibility I thought!!! Oh well so much for that..

Disappointed but thwarted in my efforts of M107 sniper-ing reenactment I proceeded to try to find mods for the M107 for some other games out there.. I thought about the official America's Army game but then remembered Crysis has much better graphics and a physics engine to kill for.. So off I went and grabbed the M107 mod from here : http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=35243&hilight=M107

Then I had trouble finding the install disk, but remembered the demo works just fine so I grabbed the Crysis DEMO from Nvidia here: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_crysis_downloads.html

Then I used the free Crytek 2 Sandbox Engine Editor to tweak my island just the way I like it: doc.crymod.com/

When I was satisfied I crouched down and sniped away! I took out a North Korean Soldier at over 1,800+ meters! (more than a full mile! )Just under the maximum effective range of the weapon!

** Here is the video capture: http://bochen360.blip.tv/file/1977466/

--

So all this got me thinking... If I can snipe a soldier in Crysis at over a mile away.. and take him out cold using just one single shot... Why can't I snipe pedestrians in the streets of Liberty City of GTAIV at street level even when they are only 30ft away!?!?!

In the final analysis lets just do this one calculation:

*Max range of effective snipering in Crysis with M107 sniper rifle is approx 1,800 meters which equates to about 5900 feet!!!

*Max range of effective shooting/sniper in GTAIV with ANY weapon/sniper is approximately no more than 30ft...

So... therefore by the sheer/raw numbers Crysis WOW FACTOR (or at least Crysis Engine max shoot-able range) overpowers that of the GTAIV game/engine by a factor of nearly 200X TIMES!!!!! WHAT IN THE HECK IS GOING ON??!!????

Distance Nomad can sniper in Crysis : 5950+ feet (that is equal to about 6.6 times that of RMS Titanic!) VIDEO PROOF Documentation

And to dare think that I did all this free, to think of it I didn't have to spend a penny, (the crysis demo and mod and editor are all free..) yet I spent over $1000 (xbox 360 version of gtaiv, the xbox360 itself which I got just for the game, then the PC version of the game and a videocard upgrade) and it got me NOWHERE... A world away I say.. A world away..

Now, Look closely at this videocapture of GTAIV snipering session... especially pay attention to the details during a few purposeful pauses in the video.. Towards the end of the clip you see the driver in the van doesn't materialize until nearly arms distance away!!!!! http://www.wegame.com/watch/GTA_IV_PC_Invisible_Driver_Bug/

You can edit how far a gun shoots in GTA4 but its still not the same as Crysis,

200X times.

Two hundred times longer scoping distance in Crysis then in GTA IV. TWO HUNDRED FEKKING TIMES.

So is there a way to get GTA IV to render pedestrians up to say 500 metres instead of having them disappear in the PC version???

Would be awesome... There are so many skyscrapers to climb and so many possible people to kill with a sniper rifle.

Yes it's sad that people compare these two different games from witch GTA demands a lot tougher hardware, yet it is a last-gen game.Sad,indeed.

@ The modifications for GTA IV: GTFO you unthankful piece of ****. People are trying hard to make IV moddable out there, and the only thing you can say is: WHY HASN"T ANYONE MADE SOMETHING I LIKE?!. Dude. Stop being such a dick.

But i agree with you. The draw distance is WAY too low. Maybe in the future someone finds out how to mod stuff so the game would draw people a lot further away. And: LOL WIN @ sniper in Crysis.

I'm talking about the driver spawn distance. This one is larger on consoles. I.e. you can snipe drivers on consoles, but can't on the PC.

Not true, there is such thing as "Driver Spawn Distance" , if there is prove it to me. I have it for 360, and its much worse, atleast in PC I can snipe people from a building in bohan, in 360 its impossible. I also want to mention that console version has a limit on view distance, so if you are playing 25+ view distance, you will see a lot further than console. Otherwise, you must be playing at 20 or less to say that this Driver Spawn BS is real. suicidal.gif

I think this says it all.. Drivers don't spawn don't materialize and don't exist in the game, engine or system until very close to the player, making shooting them from any respectable amount of distance impractical and sniping them impossible! Look closely at this videocapture of GTAIV snipering session... especially pay attention to the details during a few purposeful pauses in the video.. Towards the end of the clip you see the driver in the taxi doesn't materialize until nearly arms distance away!!!!!

Well, on the 360 @ SD, i do manage to kill drivers in cars. i see them also.

Yes, I understand.. The question begs however, why even on the most powerful systems today (on PC) we still cannot sniper at more than 30ft away? The answer is this is due to a hardcoded built in limitation and/or bug/flaw in the ported PC version of the game.. Rockstar refuses to fix or even acknowledge there is even a problem, instead giving us the "check your directx and update your drivers and get the patch" excuses... I repeat, this is not a hardware specific issue, this is an inherent flaw in the software game itself!

It seems very unlikely at this point that Rockstar will "fix" this. So future machines in the future, (for anyone who might still be playing this game two or three years from now) no matter how fast or next-gen will STILL encounter the exact same issue/problem/bug... So much for "future proofing" the game.. yeah they 'future proofed' it alright if you know what I really meanz..

There could also be a simple reason that missed with the sniper. The aiming seemed inaccurate and snipers in GTA IV are not like the ones in crysis, when there is a moving object, You cannot just aim at the object and hit it in GTA IV and real life, you have to predict where its going. That is why, the video showing the person missed.

No. As you can clearly SEE, the driver does not even APPEAR until the black van begins the turn the corner, at which point said driver "materializes out of thin air" right before our very eyes at approx 30ft from Niko..

http://blip.tv/file/1591319

------

And as you can also CLEARLY SEE, in this video at 0:06 a headshot is taken, but there is no driver in the yellow taxi van at that point in time.. had he BEEN their he would have been killed and the car would have stopped.. He materialized at 0:07 after the bullet already impacted and went through the windshield..

Then again at 0:19 we see Niko try to snipe a yellow taxi that is coming towards his way.. There is INVISIBLE (no "driver", the car is essentially driving itself) driver in the taxi at this point.. Another shot is placed at 0:21... and another at 0:22.. and another at 0:26 and finally one more at 0:28.. It is obvious and clear to note, that at 0:28 the car is a mere 30 feet away from the player, the player places a direct hit that passes though the windshield and hits the headrest of the drivers seat... Had a driver been in the car at that time, he would have gotten instantly killed...

And finally at 0:30 we see the taxi driver MATERIALIZE and come in existence, when it is only about 20ft away from the player and AFTER FIVE accurate shots had been placed to terminate him!!!

If you pretend this didn't happen or make more excuses for Rockstar I might be tempted to believe you work for them..

I take it I missed in this video too? Then what was I shooting at? Drivers of an incredibly small stature?

I have IV for PS3 and PC, on PC I play at 2048x1152 with all settings maxed out.

It looks much better on PC, and you can see more detail on things that are farther away. Still, on PS3 you can see the drivers of cars as far off in the distance as you can see, more than seven blocks away easy. On PC they only appear when they're less than a block away.

A good way to check is to go outside the safehouse Roman buys you in Algonquin, and stand so that your feet are just at the beginning of the crosswalk. The drivers of the cars will only appear when the car is getting right near the crosswalk on the other side. Peds that aren't in vehicles can be seen much farther away, and police inside cop cars can be seen as all peds in vehicles should.

It's just the distance at which you can see or shoot normal peds that Rockstar Toronto seems to have gimped.

The aiming seemed inaccurate and snipers in GTA IV are not like the ones in crysis, when there is a moving object, You cannot just aim at the object and hit it in GTA IV and real life, you have to predict where its going. That is why, the video showing the person missed.

I take it I missed in this video too? Then what was I shooting at? Drivers of an incredibly small stature?

New video of invisible drivers

Wow nice one! Short of gunning them down with a Minigun you couldn't have empirically demonstrated it better!

It really does take the fun out of sniping.. True Crysis is mostly trees and vegetation and outside terrain and mountains, etc..

But I remember the Xbox360 (which is like a whole 5 orders of magnitude slower than my desktop machine..) could play GTAIV

and not have this problem (or at least it wasn't as apparent, if I remember correctly the drivers disappeared at much farther out like 200 - 300ft range, not 20-30ft range... lol)

So there is only one other possibility, but I left that as a comment on your video.. I don't want to be accused of conspiracy theories on here.

So is there a way to get GTA IV to render pedestrians up to say 500 metres instead of having them disappear in the PC version???

Would be awesome... There are so many skyscrapers to climb and so many possible people to kill with a sniper rifle.

Lets hope R* will fix that. At least bring it to the console level.

f*ck THAT... I don't give a crap about the consoles version... This is THE PC VERSION part of the forums and I'd love to be able to see pedestrians PAST MY FRICKING nose...

After playing GTAIV for four months and not seeing Crysis since I beta tested until now.

I have to say "LOL" did you see that log? it looked like a texturless (ability to see courseness)

skin overlay .

I have got to say .... Crysis still looks like a lump of over hyped Sh*t.

GTAIV Pwns it it in many ways.

Sorry I hate the fact that I took the time to compare the two.

And yes I know gtaiv has issues for some people who can't understand that hardware just isn't ready for this game yet.

But the same goes for Crysis. That game was so buggy when it came out. Google it, you will see.

Crysis buggy Vs GTAIV Buggy

And yes I know that test is unfair.

Seeing how alot of old Crysis threads have probably been deleted by now.

Nietzsche's God

Nice analysis on comparing this game to another. I think R* ought to look at this and see that when they want to make GTA 5 or something in year from now, they should make the sniper more realistic because it sucks on how limited the range of not only the view of the scope but as well as how you can't even shoot people a mile away.

i wonder who is gona read all this lmao

I did suicidal.gif

I didn't but I get the point

You can edit the weapons handling in GTAIV but I doubt you'd get the same effect as that other game you mentioned. You're just getting too technical now. Just use a rocket uzi. tounge2.gif

What the f*ck have you been smoking???

Crysis is f*cking graphically brilliant! What graphics card do you have - an X800??? Because if you had a great graphics card, then you would know that your statement is a bunch of sh*t!!! The graphics of GTA IV are good... but certainly aren't better than Crysis. But this isn't a which game looks better thread. And as for the bugs in Crysis... their minimal compared to the bugs in GTA IV.

I mean GTA has missing textures, late renders where walls and textures won't appear until several seconds after you've entered a room, Memory Leaks, frame rate stuttering... glitchy shadows.

Don't give us that 'Crysis is buggier' angle, because thats just horsesh*t. Within 3 months, Crytek had released 3 patches to help fix their game and so far it looks and runs smooth and practically glitch free. GTA has been out for 5 months and Rockstar doesn't seem to have a f*ckING CLUE as to how their going to fix up their buggy game, DESPITE HAVING RELEASED 3 f*ckING PATCHES!!!!!

I'm sorry but your post is a crock of sh*t... it really is. Think before you type... you'll look like less of an idiot!!!
