stillmatic07
I just purchased GTA 4 via Steam the other day after waiting a while and reading a few more reviews. Once I downloaded it, I booted it up and noticed absolutely awful graphics. So I went through the different settings and tried absolutely everything. THE GAME LOOKS AWFUL. Honestly, I'd rather put up with San Andreas graphics than this. The shadows are pixelated, the trees are pixelated, and even most decals on walls are pixelated. The environment looks dreadful, which takes EVERY ounch of fun out of driving through the city. Even the cutscenes are AWFUL, I can't see anyone unless they're 3 feet in front of the screen because of the depth of field blur that seems to be forced during cut scences. I'm not putting the game down whatsoever, the game looks great in xbx360 screenshots, and other pc screenshots but my version seems as if it was a leaked, unoptimized version from 2006. My specs are fine: nvidia 9800GTX+ Q6600 @ 3.1 ghz 2gb ram vista premium Updated Drivers on Mobo and GPU. Here is an example of the "pixelated" effect:
ThatsCool
First try a different graphics driver like the 180.84 Its the best graphics driver for gta iv. Maybe it fixes your problem oh and is this problem at every texture?
CptPusheen
This is not a bug, new drivers aren't going to fix anything. It's just how game's engine works
PharmacisT-
This is not a bug, new drivers aren't going to fix anything. It's just how game's engine works rofl, NOT maybe at ur PC it looks awfull. @ mine it looks great. Try newer drivers. if u cant see anything in 5 feet this must be a bug
CharmingCharlie
If you don't like the "pixelated" look then press P on the keyboard that introduces the same blur filter the console version has.
CptPusheen
rofl, NOT Rofl, shut up. There is dithering on all edges where transparency was supposed to be. Grass, fences, shadows... That's how RAGE renders scenes and if your version looks GREAT you must have some magical release.
stillmatic07
Really? Well I just needed that clarification I guess. I guess Ive lowered my standards and cruised around a little bit more, Indeed the game is a gigantic leap from San Andreas. I was playing crysis before I installed GTA IV, so that's probably the problem haha I just don't understand how they could let something like that slide? It looks awful on my 1024X768 monitor, while it may be small it picks up a lot of imperfections. I'm satisfied with the game, and feel a little better now that it's not my computer that's the problem. However, ive seen in-game screenshots of realistic shadows, not the ones I'm experiencing. Were those blurred to the max or something? These are my current shadows:
CptPusheen
With patch 1.0.3.0 shadows on med setting look really awful. But set it to high and use this: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=386262 (self promotion) and you should be satisfied
CharmingCharlie
Have you tried the blur filter that the consoles have on by default. You can turn the blur filter on by pressing P on the keyboard, the game should look similar to the console version then. I personally play with the blur filter off because I like the sharpness of the graphics.
CptPusheen
This is how my shadows look. Less grainy than original.
john88z
just turn shadow quality to very high. might have to move some other settings down though.

nemesi5
This picture was resized with bicubic resampling... Cheap trick, you must be 12yo If you think this is fake, I'll upload another one in 1680x1050 Resolution & I don't know what you mean about resampling, there is no editing in there except sizing it down, and please do not call me 12, thats offensive and immature. I'll upload a picture in 2 minutes, hold up

nemesi5
nem, what settings are you at and what GPU? My GPU is a 9800GTX+, and I am using a resolution of 1680x1050 with Shadows on very high and rendering at highest

Resizing is actually editing. Show your shadows at noon from 90 degree angle without resizing and in png format. Your cheap tricks are immature
stillmatic07
Now I have the same GPU, and the same settings. But, my resolution is scaled to a 15 inch screen lol.
Hydro_PT
Hmm that picture is pretty weird. I just maxed out everything and my shadows don't look that great. I'm not using any tweak, resolution is 1280 x 1024, patch 1.0.3.0. Everything is on the maximum setting and definition is on. But I didn't press the "P" key, so I don't have that "smoother" effect. Still the difference isn't much. Here's a pic at 08:42 am, and look at those shadows. I prefer to play with them off... more FPS and a better look. @nemesi5: I'm not saying your shadows are fake but... they look amazingly good... I've never seen such shadows in GTA IV, excepting, of course, Rockstar's super-high-photoshoped screenshots... PS: Who likes my cellphone theme? EDIT: Wow after checking some official screenshots of the game, I noticed that your shadows are even BETTER than the ones Rockstar presents. WTF Edited April 10, 2009 by Hydro_PT
TruXter
I get strange effect when I edit the shadow settings. I crank it up, it looks better and the game is smoother.
nemesi5
Proof, that these are unedited. All at 1680x1050 JPEG form, smooth How do you like that Edited April 10, 2009 by nemesi5
Hydro_PT
Jesus, how the hell you got such nice shadows? Tell Rockstar Toronto, they might implement that for everyone on the next patch...
CptPusheen
Lol, this pictures has vaseline blur applied so shadows are smooth but whole hame is blurry as hell. Stop trolling nemesi5. Better show your shadows at NOON, without "p" filter and in PNG format. Edited April 10, 2009 by bartekxyz

GamerShotgun
Firstly I'm not a retard. Secondly.. your immature behaviour is pretty annoying in my opinion, and this isn't the first time I see you flaming someone... do you really think that this guy knows what he's talking about if it can be clearly seen how that filter is applied and not disabled? No need to start arguing and calling someone else a troll, when everyone can see the difference. And yeah, I f*cked up my previous post because I thought he's talking about that vaseline effect you said... although definition DOES mean sharpness.. my bad. So, Captain Obvious... please tell us how you've managed to discover that the default blur is enabled on that picture. It's soooo hard to tell. Secondly, If someone post RESIZED and RESPAMPLED pictures to show that his shadows are smooth and after not-very-nice-reception from some users he post dozen of pictures with definition off(previously he was boasting about how great his shadows look with definition ON): My shadows look like this WITH definition on! ... then I feel free to laugh at him and call whatever I like because he is trolling. OP was asking why there are grainy edges in GTA and is it something wrong with his copy. Then instead of telling him that this is how the game works Nemesi started posting fake pictures to confuse OP and tease him... and for you this is right behaviour... yeah... I don't feel like talking to you Edited April 10, 2009 by bartekxyz
