currently i have a e6750, 4 gigs of ram, and a 8800gt (that gets way too hot and i even had to underclock it so it wouldnt brake)

i hear good things about quad cores and this game but i really would rather like to get rid of the gfx card

help

ok

Keep you ram to start

CPU:

-Get an intel quad core like the Q6600 or one of the 45nm models

or - An AMD phenom 2 x4

Motherboard:

-Make sure you have a motherboard that will take these parts if not

-Get yourself a P35 or higher board for the intels

-Get a 780G or better a 790GX board (if you want to overclock then go for the latter)

GPU

- Nvidia GTX260 216 is at a good price point now and has the extra VRAM

- A ATI 1GB4870 with a good cooler is also at a good price point

For an nvidia card i recommend manufacturers zotac, XFX, BFG and EVGA zotac is usually cheapest with a good warranties

For an ATI card you want to go with the better coolers and lower prices which goes to XFX they have nvidia like coolers for a lower price, you might also want to look at HIS and sapphire

yeah the upgrade is either going to be a Q9550, or one of those two graphics cards. i want to know which id get the most bang for my buck

The 4870 (512mb or 1gb) is much more bang for buck than the GTX260. Its cheaper, and in a fair majority of cases, faster.

Well on the overclockersuk site which is UK based

Your looking at around £150 for a 216 GTX260 GTX260 216

And you have the 1GB 4870 for around £160-£170 however there is a gigabyte on there on a temp deal at £155 4870

I mean its really up to you i think there really close in terms of performance like real close, if you go on google and look up some recent benchmarks you can see for yourself

In terms of GTA 4 you will not see a difference as its so CPU intensive however the 4870 has a full gigabyte of VRAM for your high textures or resolutions

Me personally i would go for nvidia why well because i want to try an nvidia card because i have had 3 ati cards so far

I reckon the only deciding factor here is a few dollars, pounds, euros and 128mb of VRAM smile.gif

so are you saying the leap from a e6750 to Q9550 wouldnt be as good as a leap from the 8800gt to the 4870?

Id go Intel Quad Q6600 or the 45nm Q9550 since those are the two most popular 65nm and 45nm quads. You already have socket 774 so yo can run an Intel Quad HOWEVER you cannot run 45nm Intel quads on some Motherboard Chipsets like the nvidia 680i. Post your motherboard model number and I can check for you.

Upgrading the graphics card wont really do anything for you since this game needs all CPU.

P35 can do 45nm quad. Get a Q9550 or Q9650. Both have really dropped in price. If you get a upgraded cooler an decided to OC the only difference in the Q9550 vs Q9650 is 0.5 multiplyer which will normally result in a 200mhz more OC. So normally a Q9550 will max out at 3.8 a Q9650 can go 4.0 but it really depends on the chipset and board so you may be able to get 4.0 on Q9550.

All depends on budget and it seems as of today and newegg.com prices, the Q9650 is $50 more then the Q9550 @ $275

no no the other way around

Highly recommend the 4870. You might want to look at the "Vapor-X" editions *just* out. They're a bit more expensive but well worth the cooler it comes with. If I hadn't gotten a 1GB 4870 already you can be sure, extravagant or not, I'd be getting the Vapor-X 2GB version "just because".

For now - very happy with the 4870 to buy me the time to see "what's next". One downside is that....

IT IS A BIG BEAST OF A CARD

(it's ridiculous)

Get a Core 2 Quad Q9550 and the NEW yet to be released Nvidia GTX 275 1796mb card. It will launch at $299 USD and has 1.7gig of vram so you can play GTA IV at max. Its about as fast as a GTX 285 but $100 less and almost twice the ram. If you do get the GTX 275, get the EVGA one, and make sure you register it with them within 30 days. The 275 should launch n the next week or two. I think we will see the 896mb one first, then the 1796 a week after. Either one will rock GTA but if you want max GTA IV graphics, the 1796 is the way to go, and only $50 USD more. I plan on getting one or two myself!

In response to above post. Don't get 4870, get the new 4890 since I believe its about the same price and it just came out and its a bit faster then last gen 4870 but I would still go wit hthe GTX 275 from Nvidia because of the VRAM configuration allowing you to run GTA IV on MAX with good FPS, especially with the new CPU.

I would NOT get a GPU before a new CPU because this game is VERY CPU demanding and any other upgrade other then a CPU will not make a difference in GTA IV.

Might want to up to 8 gigs of ram too. If you have 2x2gig sticks, and you can get another 2x2gig matching set I would do it. Vista X64 really likes 8gigs smile.gif

Just a recommendation is all. Yours are equally if not more appropriate. As far as the 4890 goes, AFAIK it's just an overclocked 4870. With the Vapor-X edition of the 4870 I'd be willing to bet you could get the same results with a bit of a cheaper price point? Advantage too, that beast has 2GB of VRAM (not that it is necessary without a bit more horsepower too).

In any case - I agree that the next round (of GPUs) is much more appropriate. FWIW, I should have waited too but really couldn't. Three months IMO was enough waiting cool.gif
