elBATCHo
Would I lose noticeable amount of FPS going up to 1920x1080? Or would it not be too noticeable? Benchmarks I saw for other games liek Crysis, COD4, GRID, FC2 showed anywhere from 4-8 FPS loss going to the higher res but I'm just wondering how GTA4 would react. thanks
Girish
Why was there a need of a topic for this? You could have tried it yourself without asking. Anyways to answer your question, even though you seem to have a good enough rig, you'll lose a few fps by changing to a higher resolution.
Gouveia
Of course, the GFX card would need to process more stuff with more definition.

Reason I asked is cause GTA4 seems to be a mostly CPU driven game, so I thought maybe the graphics card wouldn't take much hit. Judazzz
Of course it will affect performance to a a certain degree, but personally, I didn't notice that much of a difference between 1280W, 1440 and 1680 resolutions with the same settings. Notably less than most other games I have currently installed... I'd say, just give it a shot: no machine is the same, so some might experience bigger differences than others - trial and error basically, just like trying to find the optimum for any other graphics setting. PharmacisT-
nope, in GTAIV the Resolution don't take much of the performance. E: (GFX card) right. In GTAIV the gfx card doesnt matter much.
elBATCHo
cool ill give it a shot then, I dont like the way everything seems "big" on a 22" with 1680, I want smaller pixel pitch
Kurgen
nope, in GTAIV the Resolution don't take much of the performance. E: (GFX card) right. In GTAIV the gfx card doesnt matter much. It does, but depends on the degree of change. If I run the benchmark at 800x600 I get 50 - 60 fps, and at 1680x1050 I get about 35 fps.
Kurgen
cool ill give it a shot then, I dont like the way everything seems "big" on a 22" with 1680, I want smaller pixel pitch You sure that isn't just the lack of anti-aliasing you're seeing? Even at a moderately high-res like 1680x1050, you can clearly see aliased edges all over the place, especially on a big-ish screen like 22". I know, because that's exactly my settings; 1680 on a 22". Running @ 1920 on the same screen will certain improve the pixel definition, but there will be a frame-rate hit.

Im talking about in general everything feels bigger compared to the small pitch 20" 1600x1200 I used to have. Ill have to reconsider going to the higher resolution, a new video card at this moment is kind of out of the question, and we all know SLI doesnt do jack for GTA4
HenryHill
Interestingly I tried out GTA IV at 1920x1080 on a 40" Sony Bravia for the first time just two days ago when my DVI to HDMI cable finally arrived and I can confirm that there doesn't seem to be a huge drop in FPS. Similar to Kurgen, I also normally use a 22" monitor at 1680x1050. What size screen are you thinking of getting, elBATCHo? (In terms of inches rather than resolution?) JohnZS
I also only lost a couple of FPS (if that) when I upgraded from my NEC 20WGX2 Pro 20" monitor (1680) to my NEC 24WMGX3 Pro monitor (1920). The graphics are crisper at this resolution, but I can't help but feel that 2XAA would make it look lovely John
elBATCHo
Hopefully this week I might be able to get that new monitor, the sale fell thru on mine a few weeks ago. i will probably get the 23" Acer at 1920x1080 off newegg for 179,

Also the visual quality difference going from 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 with 23" will be quite noticable and very enjoyable.
Murcchachosa
On my laptop I setted the res to 1024x768. Smootley. When I changed to 1920x1080, I'll loss about 10-5 FPS. So the answer, yes, you will loss amount of FPS when go higher.
hamzta09
I went from 1280x768 to 1920x1200 with barely any loss at all, 30-40 at 1920 and 35-45 at 1280. And thats on an 8800gt..
abottig
There will be a difference, but it will be small. Push that overclock some more and gain those frames back. Possibly OC the 260 as well, why not.
RedEnd
The game resolution change doesn't do much effect. i used to play on 17' with 1280x1080 now i play with 32' 1920x1080, i didn't feel any fps drops at all.. meybe 3 fps. so what.. 1920x1080 ftw! 800x600 ftl
C06alt
my game runs faster in my monitors native res of 1920 x 1200 Sounds crazy but for me lower rez causes it to run slower.
