Vanzant
I have Verizon phone service, They sent me this new Modem the Wireless/DSL Modem/Router the GT704WG. Now, Yes I use Two computers, one for Gaming and one for General use....But It's all connected by wires. I do not need or ever want Wireless. In fact, I would just love to pull this Modem apart and break whatever it is that runs wireless. Meaning, no configuration that people can get behid no WEP key that can be bypassed, I want total f*cking destruction of any Wireless out of this modem. My question basically is, what can I tear apart inside the Modem to destroy wireless without making the modem useless for my Two wired computers? Right now I unscrewed the antenna, I'll probably toss it into the trash, it's of no use. So what can I do to make sure no signal at all comes out of this Modem? .AshRemains
I think pulling the antenna out will work by itself, considering that's what sends out the wireless signals. So, if that doesn't work then f*ck it and by a DSL router or some sh*t.
Vanzant
Ash, pulling out the antenna only works within a certain distance. I live in an Apt. complex full of sharks. Verizon has made it to where you can only use equipment shipped to the user.
Tornado Rex
Call them up and tell them you want to turn the wireless off. You should be able to get into a config somehow and disable the wireless. ~ Proud Supporter of the Child's Play Charity! | GTANET + Child's Play ~
SWEETSAPRIK
Is it not possible to just disable the wireless through the device's management? It should be possible. Google search also says you could enable WPA. (edit) Whoops, took too long googling. (re-edit) Before you put in a call, the default for that device should be http://192.168.0.1 look through the options. (re-re-edit) The device's manual says (page 54) it's possible, so unless verizon reflashed it with a gimped firmware, it should just be a matter of turning off the radio. If all else fails, get some fine copper mesh from a craft store, and encase it in that. Be sure to leave plenty of room for ventilation though. Anyway, that should cut off all the signal to the internal transmitter. The antenna only attracts signals to the transmitter, taking it off won't stop the transmission, but with enough metal around it the less signal can get through. You want to get as fine as mesh as possible, because the intersecting points are really the conduit that the signal travels into the mesh from. In case you're wondering, I use to have to put my guitar effects processor in a mesh like this because it would pick up air traffic control signals. I mean, when you think about it, a guitar is really just a large antenna, so strings would pick up this signal, and my pickups would carry them to the processor through magnetic induction. It took me weeks to figure out how to stop it until I saw some show on the Mythbusters where they were testing cell phones on air planes or something, and they made this room and covered it in mesh. I tried it on my effect's processor, and all the signals and even a lot of the noise and static disappeared. I even found a few books detailing the best way to mesh-guard a room. Really paranoid books, talking about where bugs are likely locate, and even giving formulas to figure out how much mesh you need based on the estimated broadcasting frequencies of whatever radio signals you're trying to can. Creepy stuff. But, yeah, I'd go with trying to find it in the firmware first. If you can't find a way to turn the wireless off, you can at least set it up so they can't see your internal network or get internet access. Slamman
One member here informed me you guys pay diddly compared to what ISP charges are in the States, as I said, $30 to $50 USD PER month for a wireless service slowest speed offering, I am paying nearly $30 for dialup, so it's just out of reach. Anywho, I was going to add a new topic, but since I think your topic is attracting those who do feel the need for Wireless, like me.... This past week, the news here reported that a team of Obama's is looking at making Wireless Nationwide in the USA cheap and plentiful, to afford and allow EVERYONE access to what it affords in modern tech. This is just the news I've been hoping for, and obvously in favor of for some time! Fingers and toes are now crossed!!
