Mister Pink
I'm just about to watch the final episode of the whole series with my gf who is only watching it for the first time. I've watched it 3 times,ย up until season 5 the second time and this is my second time watching season 6. It ages well because it's about humans, mental health, psychology, family and violence. All universal and timeless themes.ย ย Looking forward to the film but not too hyped. Its going to be it own thing, completely different format but in the same world. I love The Sopranos for it's long-form storytelling. Watching a film will be interesting but the irony is The Sopranos came out toย make movie-quality TV when movies were superior and dominant.ย The Sopranos raised the bar and set off a chain of big-budget TV shows that rivalled and exceed the quality of movies. Now we're living in a golden age of TV shows and movies have been declining somewhat in originality with remakes, superhero films and less big budget risky films.ย ย Who knows, maybe this is a glorified pilot for a prequel series? It's a completely different show where the main star of the show is the city of Baltimore and it's institutions. It's a critique on the war on drugs. It's tragic and funny, just like The Sopranos. It excels at showing characters that are all types of shadesย of grey. There is corruption in the law enforcement but there are also people there that care and are trying to do their jobs but bureaucracy and red tape prevents them. They're are people in the the drug trade that are good people or have the potential to be good but their circumstances didn't allow them the chance to live another life. It's a very smart show and it does require your attention to get through the first few episodes. Don't let this put you off. The reward is great.ย The Wire is genius in it's social commentary and sense of realism.ย ย After you watch it, you'll feel like every TV show is phoney and as dumb as rocks.ย ย ย They turned it into 16:9 format and gave it a face lift. No better timeย to watch it. Stellar cast such as Michael K. Williams, Lance Reddick, Idris Elba, Method Man, Aiden Gillen and so many more including real ex heroin drug lords and convicted murderers playing big roles in the show to give it that sense of Baltimore realism.ย ย ย If you want something close to the The Sopranos in terms of themes and content, try Boardwalk Empire. It's written and produced by a lot of The Sopranos guys, namely Tim Van Patten and Terrence Winter who co-wrote and also directed a bunch of The Sopranos.ย Boardwalk Empire, The Wire and The Sopranos are three most top quality shows in terms of writing in my opinion. They also have so much re-watch-ability because they are so rich in content that each viewing reveals new details.ย ย ย The 3 best TV crime-based dramasย ever written. He's not the most engaging guy and was dissappointed that he hadn't even watched The Sopranos properly. Imperioli is more the artist here and he's engaging. He has good stories and insight.ย ย This will improve when they can do the podcast in the same room and they have guests. Edie Falco was supposed to be their first guest.ย ย "Meadow" and "AJ" have their own podcast too - Pyjama Pants podcast ย I would highly recommend the time Robert Iler went on Joey Diaz's podcast. Diaz normally does most of the talking but Joey listened this time, so much. I think he see's so much of himself in Iler. It's weird, Joey and Iler have this amazing chemistry.ย ย He goes in to great depth and has some mad stories about growing up on the set of The Sopranos and eventually becoming an addict and partying like mental. Both Robert Iler and Joey Diaz are great storytellers. Joey Diaz being a master story teller. He's lived the lives of 20 people. Everyone's favourite shady uncle.ย ย ย Iler makes a great point about The Sopranos ar the 20min mark. He says part of the success about The Sopranos is that nowadays you see so many actors, out of their character, doingย things out of character on social media, that it dilutes the believability of the characters a bit. You are reminded that these are characters. Back when The Sopranos was airing you wouldn't see photos of the actors sitting around smoking cigarettes in their PJs.ย ย I absolutely agree. I thought this for many years. That's why I couldn't get on Game of Thrones hypetrain when they were doing self-parodies and there stupid games and just general nonsense going on around the show. I'll watch the whole thing now that they hype is gone and will enjoy it in peace.ย Edited April 15, 2020 by Mister Pink ย ๐ผ๐๐๐ธ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐พ๐ฝ ๐๐๐พ๐ฟ

Webbie2689
I just listened to the JRE episode with Steve and Michael over the course of the last few days and honestly without it I'd have had no idea that these two had their own podcast. I did hear about Robert and Jamie's podcast when Robertย went on Uncle Joey's podcast, and of course I had to check out some of the episode where Joey went on theirs. Didn't know Adriana had one as well. I was planning on checking out Steve and Michael's podcast soon but shame to hear Steve doesn't exactly make it exciting. Thoroughly enjoyed the JRE, though. ย The Sopranos is still my favorite show of all time. First watched it probably 5ish+ years ago and have watched it in its entirety at least 3 times since. I love it, and I love the ending despite many people being disappointed with it. To me there was only two ways to properly end a show like this, and the way Chase did it pretty much leaves the door open for whatever the fan wants for Tony and his family. Like most of us can agree what probably happened when the man in the members only jacket came out of the bathroom, but if you'd like to think that didn't happen the ending certainly gives you that option. ย Still in search of a show that can top it for me. Watched two season of Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire. I enjoyed both but neither hooked me enough to keep going. I plan to someday but just not in a hurry to do so. Watched the pilot of The Wire once and it does seem good but I just wasn't dying to continue. Westworld is the only show that has hooked me the way The Sopranos did. Unfortunately the season three finale pretty much killed my interest in that show, so I'm back to not really being interested in any current shows. Unfortunately the season three finale pretty much killed my interest in that show, so I'm back to not really being interested in any current shows. I love the end of The Sopranos. It's what makes The Sopranos brilliant. I think to a casual observer it may be a dumb mob show. And parts of it can be that, if you want it.ย But more astute observers will relish in the subtext (Tony and his affinity for animals) etc, and all the psychology that plays through the show.ย ย Then ending was probably the most perfect ending of a show. The music, the symbolism and hints at what is happening. And I think it's pretty safe to say what happens. I mean the writers knew 2 years in advance what was going to happen. So we see a hint at it in an earlier season. And, now Chase recently inadvertently spilled the beans. But for hopeless optimists, if they didn't see it, it didn't happen.ย ย The Sopranos is probably my favourite show, with Boardwalk Empire and The Wire. Both Boardwalk and The Wire take a few episodes to gear up. Once they do, the quality, humour, cinematography, depth, cleverness, witty dialogue is all there. I guarantee it.ย ย You watched the pilot of The Wire. You can't really judge it on that. It's a bit like saying you saw the cover for The Godfather. Nothing will show you how great the show is unless you watch it. And, it's so good, when you rewatch it, it gets better because it's so layered. You'll learn something new every time.ย ย Same with Boardwalk. The whole first season is rather slow. But you know it's 5 seasons. So they're just building the world. But man, it gets good. It's main writers and producers/directors of The Sopranos. Tim Van Patten, Terrence Winters that make Boardwalk and they also do some episodes of The Wire too (directing I think) ย Watch this. There is no spoilers. As I said in another thread, they made Universityย courses at Harvard and Berkely that examine the shows themes. Once you watch it, all TV shows will seem a little simple after it.ย ย ย ย Boardwalk Empire is criminally underrated. Probably due to the first season being a little bit of a slow burn. But fortune comes to those who wait. The Wire, an incredibly realistic show having real ex-heroin king-pins (the deacon)ย on the show and real ex police chiefs playing roles.ย ย Boardwalk focuses on real criminals. Al Capone,ย Nucky Johnson, Lucky Luciano, Joe Masseria, Arnold Rothstein.. you can see half of them in this scene. Margaret Schroeder can be kind of annoying at first but I learned to appreciate her character. Trying to incorporate strong, female leads in these shows about mainly alpha males I imagine, is challenging. She can be annoying but the character is well-written. I found her innocent, Irish small-island woman deamour really developed well as she became more coercive and manipulative like Nucky, while retaining her kind of innocent charm.ย ย Kelly McDonald plays Margaret. Most people may remember her as the Diane from Trainspotting. Her Irish accent is actually quite good.
