Free Pills With Every Game!

A father of two spoke today of his anger at discovering four ecstasy pills inside a computer game bought from a High Street chain store.

Richard Thornhill, 34, has demanded answers to how the illegal drugs found their way under the front cover of X-Box game Grand Theft Auto 4, which he bought from Gamestation in Cheltenham.

Mr Thornhill and his wife Lesley were left shaken by the discovery and concerned for the safety of their 12-year-old son Jamie whom they allow to play the game.

The couple claim Gamestation's initial response was to tell them to "flush the drugs down the toilet".

Mr Thornhill said he and his brother Lee both bought pre-owned copies of the game on special offer on Sunday, and it was later in the evening he made the shocking discovery.

He said: "I was going to put it away and a felt a lump on the front cover. Inside the instruction booklet was a ball of shrinkwrap, or clingfilm.

"I thought it was just a ball of clingfilm, but then I realised there were tablets inside. I instantly felt sick.

"They had Mitsubishi signs on them, which I recalled meant they were ecstasy pills. I wasn't 100% sure though, so I checked online and sure enough I was right - it was ecstasy.

"What made me feel the most distraught was the fact we let our 12-year-old son play the game. Worse case scenario is he could have swallowed those pills.

"He plays racing games as well, which have Mitsubishi cars in them, so he could have just thought they were something fun - like sweets."

Mr Thornhill, an assistant manager at Hirebase in Cheltenham, said Gamestation initially avoided any responsibility - and told him and his wife to flush the drugs down the toilet.

Mrs Thornhill persisted with the company and eventually contacted the area manager whom she claimed invited her to hand the drugs over to Gamestation so they could destroy them.

The panicked couple were not comfortable with this course of action and contacted Gloucestershire Police. Officers came to their home in Gloucester to collect the pills.

Mr Thornhill added: "My wife was distraught and livid. We both want to know how this sort of thing can possibly happen. Finding illegal drugs in a computer game is the last thing you expect to happen when you get home.

"We'd like to see Gamestation carrying out more thorough checks of the games they accept, rather than having a quick glance at the disc inside."

Gamestation buys and sells new and pre-owned games for a number of consoles.

A spokesman for the store said: "We have rigorous procedures for accepting pre-owned titles and checking them before they are put back on sale.

"We have launched an investigation and will work closely with Cheltenham police to find out what happened."

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Police said: "We collected the tablets and destroyed them. Although forensic tests were not conducted, it was more than likely they were ecstasy pills."

Dammit I didn't get any free pills - I'm taking my GTA4 back to the shop!

Just sounds like the people working in the store put them in the games to get rid of them/hide them for later and they put them in games that were obviously pre ordered and got sent away that day.

Life begins at 12, don't it. The whole thing is rather sad. It's a MATURE title, but obviously, MATURE people don't take drugs, they know better!!

Their kid is 12 years old, but they are still worried that he'll eat strange pills he found in shrinkwrap in a case with preowned game? And yet they let him play GTA IV? There's something wrong with these people.

Of course, the Gamestation isn't any better. Their first advice should have been to contact the police, and to contact police themselves just in case. Managers trying to cover their asses like that is despicable. Some people should definitely lose their jobs.

Other than that, sh*t like that happens. You can try checking games more thoroughly, but it's still going to happen. Look on the bright side. Somewhere out there there is some guy who can't find his Ecstasy stash. That someone probably went through the whole game collection several times by now.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

12 year olds? Playing GTA IV and finding drugs?

Nah... I only heard 3th elementary graders talking about that stuff here...

The motives could have been as simple as 'kicks'.

I think the whole, shrink wrapping it to get it looking store bought, was that possible In the Store?

I am not sure, but used items sometimes are.

I think that it's still crazy to put it in a game case.

And then in a store. Seriusly, what's wrong with those people? mercie_blink.gif

Funniest part of the article. He's trying to bullsh*t like he didn't know what it was.

Why didn't he flush em, or throw em away like anybody else would. Obviously if they were still in there then the child had no idea they were there. Good thing some people don't read manuals eh?

If a 12 year old is mature enough to play GTA IV and can cope with the real world and real violence, they what's the problem if they are allowed to play them? Who said if your 12 you have to play Lego Star Wars? If you have mature mind you won't be affected, so I see no problem if they're ready. But that's beside the point, it was probably the previous owner playing a joke on whoever bought the game.

It was a pre-owned game. Most likely the original owner was using the game case as a stash and either forgot to remove them before selling the game or it was stolen from him and sold to the store.

Ecstasy costs money. No one in their right mind would purposefully put those pills in there.

Yeah, this.

I don't think the store would put them in there.

I really think these "good parents" are trying to get some "compensation" money by making this as big a deal as possible.

Haha yeah. 'Respinsible' parents should've flushed 'em. And what stupid 12 year old eats strange pills? What 12 thinks 'fun sweets' are left in a game? You've got to be really f*cking stupid, mentally retarded or have parent that rap you in bubble rap your whole life to not know about that at that age.

Oyster, were you trying to be funny with that? It didn't work, sorry to say. Just quoted all that to fail! hahaha

I think the title conjured up the idea that the company is behind it, but I don't think any company would be that neglegent, outside of the Peanut Corporation of America, they CLEARLY don't give a damn who eats their s**t! hahaha

Why flush them? He reported it to the police, which he should have done. The morons at the game store are the ones who hid it there, and it was obvious when they actually had the balls to suggest the parents bring the pills back so they could "destroy" them...in their stomachs.

There's nothing wrong with a bit of weed, as that isn't going to do anything at all to harm you. Alcohol is much more harmful, but easier to control so it's legal. Any man-made drug should be illegal as it's all chemicals that are going to f*ck you up. What's a little pot going to do but make you hungry?

I would have called the cops on this matter, because it's obvious the game store employees are in on the whole thing and they deserve to be shot for even risking the life of anyone who picked up that particular copy of the game. Yes, shot. Mercilessly.

Yes, that. Or the pills could have been cyanide disguised as E placed by some psycho. It's happened before which is what led to safety seals being required for OTC drugs.

Beat me to it, because then it could be hailed as a collector's item. I wonder if he'd try and sell them at school, and then use his stylus to stab a teacher in the neck.

i Played GTA when i was 12. You just have to prove to your parents that you don't take the things that they do in. That what i did and my mum trusts me to make use of life.
