That's not the place to put command lines. You must create a .txt file named commandline on the GTA IV and there you copy that -memrestrict 262144000 command. wink.gif

-memrestrict 262144000

I pasted the above command into the .txt file...GTA runs fine. Now I want to know what the numbers mean?

-memrestrict 262144000

That number is roughly equal to 256Mb. That's about half the video memory of a 512Mb videocard.

I'm only guessing but I think the memrestrict number limits the size of memory used for the textures in the videocard. This does not affect how GTA4 uses your main memory, it only changes how GTA4 uses your video memory.

A side effect of a too small memrestrict number is that you may see more pop-up objects because the textures for some objects may not fit into the restricted memory space. The textures then have to be reloaded from cache or disk which is a slow process.

So... Why does this help to defeat stuttering? Setting a texture memory restriction in the video memory allows more memory to be available to other functions of the videocard such as the video buffers. When the videocard is allowed to it will fill the memory to near capacity, often placing textures into video memory that are not strictly needed to display the current frame. When the video memory is full there can be conflicts between memory objects, the GPU then has to unload some of the video memory in order to get space to load a needed object, this consumes GPU processing time which you see as stuttering. With less video memory used up by textures it is less likely that there will be memory collisions between objects in video memory which consume GPU processing time to resolve.

All the above is mostly a guess, I'm not a videocard driver expert.

thanks for the reply zBobG...

Im going to try a few other mem settings...one of them just might work

-memrestrict 188743680 LOW TEXTURES (256M Video Cards)

-memrestrict 209715200

-memrestrict 230686720

-memrestrict 262144000 MED TEXTURES (512M Video Cards)

-memrestrict 293601280

-memrestrict 314572800

-memrestrict 629145600 HIGH TEXTURES (1Gig+ Video Cards)

-memrestrict 650117120

-memrestrict 681574400

This stupid driver is the only this has has really helped me get rid of the stuttering.. i don't get it, do nvidia do a driver for each game now, so we have to switch if we want the best performance? this week they released one for the new ridick game. This is nuts.

That's pure advertising IMO. I've been changing my drivers often now, and I don't notice any difference. Also the new drivers just have effect on the newest cards. Even though they list lots of them, they change nothing. My 9600 GT stopped receiving appropriate drivers since Summer 2008... tounge.gif

Can't be advertising, i'd would be stupid to advertise by saying "use this drivers for optimal performance on XXXX game", and the same thing for every single game (call of duty, unreal tournament, gta4, mirror's edge, left 4 dead), because it simply is a mess.

What they should do is have a better version control of each driver release, and retain any previous games specific optimizations, otherwise the whole unified driver and game profiles ideas are just useless.

I just hope that at least they include those optimization in major releases, but who the hell knows confused.gif

It's one thing to discontinue optimizing old products after a period of time, but doing it on every driver release... sneaky2.gif

I say it's advertising because if you notice, a lot of games are "meant to be played with a Nvidia card". Nvidia does a lot of advertising on the gaming industry, and releasing drivers "for X game" probably is a marketing strategy so they can sell more cards, the companies that make the games can get some more money and it might also show that Nvidia cares for their costumers and works to deliver specific drivers for optimal performance. Something along those lines. tounge.gif

Yep it's normal that after some time a graphics card stops to receive updates, but I just feel that they release a lot of new cards and they don't explore their fully potential... they just want to sell the latest one, and the next month, sell the latest card, and so on...

am gonna try now to test this drivers for my geforce 9500gt, i've tried everything i've read in here, memrestrict, tweaks, newest drivers, everything... let's see if this version of the nvidia drivers specially made for gtaiv works for me, i will post later with the outcome!

UPDATE!..

This nvidia gtaiv special driver works for me, but the only difference now is than instead of stutter every 1 or 2 minutes, it stutters every 10-15min, i had to remove de commandline.txt with the memrestrict because it works just like before, i took it, and it works better (stutters every 10-15min)....

its a little bit more playable, but anyway am very dissapointment of the game and all the protection crap it makes the game totally crap.

thanks anyway for this

You're right, if you put it that way it makes sense to me, it's just that when you think of it, a special driver for each game just doesn't prove to be very confortable sad.gif

BadBlood, i was having stuttering after those 20min or so you mentioned, in my case, using the 180.84 drivers has make it much more subtle and only when i drive very fast from one place to another. The way i see it, whatever these drivers do, they don't fix the issue completely, but they do help.

it stutters to me too now, the firs 10-15 min of playing it works great actually with a lot of details and resolution on my geforce9500gt 512mb, but after those 10-15 min it stutters every 3-4 min for like 5 seconds, so, when am in a mission and the stutters appear in the middle of it, it become very annoying. But as you said before, it doesn't fix the issue, but it helps install the 180.84 driver.
