stodge
Approximately how far into the game do I have to get before the other areas are unlocked? I'm enjoying just driving around enjoying the scenery and it's frustrating being blocked from some areas. I know there are probably ways of getting in but I'd rather enjoy them without a 5 star rating! This is on the PS2 and I only bought it two days ago! Thanks
dice
I would say about 20% until you unlock the countryside and san fierro and about 50% before you unlock the desert and las venturas. But you can always activate this cheat to freeze your wanted level: Circle, Right, Circle, Right, Left, Square, Triangle, Up

Blizzard14
And you get 4 stars, not 5. When San Fierro gets unlocked in the mission "Are you going to San Fierro?", you get the max limit of wanted stars increased to 5, where the FBI comes in with FBI Ranchers packing MP5's. When Las Venturas gets unlocked in the mission (?), you get the max limit of wanted stars increased to 6, which is the highest in the game, where the Army comes in with Barracks and Rhinos packing M4's. lazy34
San Fierro gets unlocked after "The green sabre" Really? Yeah, San Fierro becomes safe to enter after The Green Sabre, but you can't buy any safehouses until you are "officially" in San Fierro. The Doherty garage will be available for use though. lil weasel
there are approx. 28 missions to do before the Second opens. And 27 more to open the Third (last) Island. The Question is: How far into the game... before the island UNLOCKS. People... PLEASE ... Don't Confuse Access (getting into) an island with Being Able to Purchase Save Houses. They arn't the same thing. The Poster wants to TOUR not invade Edited April 14, 2009 by lil weasel
Flesh-n-Bone
Can you get to Las Venturas without getting 4 stars after Yay Ka-Boom Boom? Or do you have to finish flying school which is when the LV mission strand opens.

LV is available after Yay-Ka-Boom-Boom, but LV safehouses can't be bought until Woozie calls you to come to the Four Dragons Casino.
GTA_Loco
Can you get to Las Venturas without getting 4 stars after Yay Ka-Boom Boom? Or do you have to finish flying school which is when the LV mission strand opens. Yes, as long as Mike Toreno has called you up already and his missions in the desert have been unlocked. This is pretty much the same way as when you've missions in the Badlands already and San Fierro is accessible without getting 4 stars wanted level. But if you're only after exploring LV or any other locked places early in the game, you can just always explore any of the missions that freeze your wanted level. Mainland Marauder
San Fierro gets unlocked after "The green sabre" Really? Yeah, San Fierro becomes safe to enter after The Green Sabre, but you can't buy any safehouses until you are "officially" in San Fierro. The Doherty garage will be available for use though. You can buy the safehouses in Angel Pine, Blueberry, Dillimore and Palomino Creek after "The Green Sabre," but you get the garage in Doherty only after completing Catalina's missions and the two races in the Badlands. There is a way to explore anywhere safely without cheating, outlined by our good old friend pdescobar here. zmoonchild
There is a way to explore anywhere safely without cheating, outlined by our good old friend pdescobar here. Just to add to that, you can also explore certain areas of San Andreas while it's still locked simply by staying outside of the zones that trigger a Wanted Level. Here's the map. (another one of P.D. Escobar's great contributions) You can also explore San Andreas by making sure that Carl stays in the water only (not on a boat)... He can swim anywhere inside a locked area as long as he doesn't touch the ground or touch any vehicle.... that map only reflects the areas where Carl can go while occupying a vehicle, not swimming... I don't have a map that shows where Carl can go while swimming; just follow those simple water-rules, and you'll be fine. Also, areas of water that are completely contained within locked areas will not trigger a Wanted Level either, but you must cross land in order to get to them. Once you're in the water though, your Wanted Level will gradually drop.

No, you can use the Doherty garage from the start of the game. You can use the physical garage for parking and storing vehicles from the very beginning of the game, yes… But I think that Mainland Marauder was referring to the fact that Carl actually gains possession, as in ownership and the ability to save games there, after The Green Sabre... actually that would be "are you Going to San Fierro"
NTAuthority
Also, the higher maximum wanted rating is 'unlocked' after/near the safehouses in the city for that region are available too, IIRC after The Green Sabre and Verdantg Meadown. Inactive in GTA/R* title modification indefinitely pursuant to a court order obtained by TTWO. Good job acting against modding!
trickstar34
Areas Being Unlocked: Flint County (San Fierro) = The Green Sabre Bone County (Las Venturas/Tierra Robada) = Yay Ka Boom Boom Wanted Levels Unlocked: 5 stars = Are you going to San Fierro? 6 stars = Verdant Meadows

Thanks lock your wanted level then hop into the airport and grab a plane or you can do the jet pack cheat. then you can fly to all the areas. (easier than driving) but it wont be any fun (i've tried it) because all you can do is drive around, no new places are unlocked, you can't by new houses, etc.
