Girish
go to low everything than increase untill you find a comfortable area. This. Both your CPU and GPU ain't that strong, so I recommend not going above medium. Try to find a playable fps somewhere between low and medium. I have a Q6600 and a HD4850 and yet, I put down all my settings at low just to get that extra bit of fps for a more smoother gameplay. Also remember that you don't necessarily have to utilize all your memory resource that is available to you. It doesn't work that way; concentrate on reducing draw distance and traffic density. Shadow detail and reflection detail will also make a difference.
Drag_Drift
For me the resolution should be the first thing you tweak. Try to find a resolution you're comfortable with, and gives a reasonable amount of FPS. If you're fine with 800x600 then so be it, if you'd like more details bump it up to 1024x768 albeit a little bit of FPS lost. If you're hating the jaggies then bump it up to your monitor's native resolution. Then from there, try different configurations to your settings. Medium textures, low reflections, low shadows, low water quality, reasonable draw and detail distance and vehicle density. When I first booted up GTAIV on a C2D/7800GT PC, that's the first thing I did. 1024x768 texture quality medium and render quality medium, then the sliders were all at the middle. It game me playable, but not enjoyable FPS. Now what I did was I re-balanced the sliders, I put detail at 30, draw at 20, and vehicle on 40. It gave me enjoyable FPS without much lag or stutter. Just try to balance your setting. Don't always max out everything just because the game allows you to. Edited April 8, 2009 by Drag_Drift
gtakid_arj
Im running the game at 1024X768 pretty much all sliders are at low, shadow quality is medium, my shadow density is 0 view distance, detail distance etc are at like 10-15 v-sync is off (does that make a difference??) im still gettin like 15~18 fps i mean its playable but it could be better.... anything else i can do?? Drag_Drift
It's your choice. If you want better graphics but on a low resolution you can switch to 800x600 and set some settings(haha) and sliders up. It's all made up of personal preference. That's the beauty of it!
Hydro_PT
Your CPU and GPU are not good enough, like girishb stated. Since you have patch 1.0.3.0 I would recommend turning the shadows off. It gave me a boost in FPS, and tbh those shadows are horrible, so I play better without them. There isn't much you can do to improve FPS. Try to play at 800 x 600... or then turn every slider to the minimum. The game will look very bad, but you may get those extra FPS you need.
