learn2forget
If I download GTA IV (buy not steal) from a website is it any different from what I'd get if I went to the store and bought the DVD? Is it worth the extra effort to get the physical DVD? Especially concerning modding?
CharmingCharlie
As far as I am aware the steam version of GTA 4 is exactly the same as the retail version except for some minor adjustments to remove the dvd check and integrate it into the steam system. As far as I am aware the steam version is just as "moddable" as the retail version. So the only thing you will be missing out on is the map/books that come with the retail version. If you are downloading it from Direct2Drive, I can't say for 100% certainty but I believe it is the same situation again. It is basically the retail version minus the dvd check and is as "moddable" as the retail and steam versions.

I still recommend buying the retail version, its safer and I heard that some steam users have troubles with downloading the patch and the commandline, + do you really want to download 15GB+ ? It would take a day or two.

Jc84144
pay for the 15gb? and you guys think it will take 2 days? You guys really need to look for better internet service providers...... It would take less than 4 hours and you would have unlimited bandwidth if you took your internet connection seriously. The only thing you have to do is tell Steam not to update if you do it manually or you can wait longer and Steam will update it. Commandlines work fine and the game only took 4 hours to download. I left it downloading over night much better than going out and buying it.

I have a 10mbit connection for which I pay (with current PLN/US dollar exchange) around 26 dollars/month, with unlimited bandwith... Doing easy mathematics it would also take around 4 hours. GamerShotgun
But remember, you still can't be sure about how fast your download will be. It really depends on how many players are downloading the same time.

learn2forget
In this day and age of bankrupt companies ,what would you do if steam runs out of steam, at least you would have a hard copy. I'm not too worried. If anything on this earth is "too big to fail" it's kids and their video games Oh and it took about 5 hours, but I was doing other stuff online for most of that. Murcchachosa
Steam versions are insaneley a load of bullsh*t. The biggest problem is that when you have to reinstall Windows, you'll lost the data. So goodbye game and goodbye money. Retail is much better, just put that discsh*t anywhere save or put that in yo pc and play the game. Have a nice day dawg

So goodbye game and goodbye money. That's not true... First of all, if I read the terms correctly, you can always re-download any games you delete. Second of all, anyone can get an external hard drive and store it on that while reinstalling Windows or reformatting their hard drive. You know you can get a terabyte for less than $100 now? That's $0.10 per gigabyte -- $1.50 to store your Steam version of GTAIV for as long as you want without worrying about disc damage or loss. Third, in my case I have a Mac with boot camp and Windows, so all I have to do is keep a copy of GTAIV on the Mac side and I can reinstall Windows as many times as I want and just copy GTA back over. The only thing I was really worried about was getting some kind of protected or encrypted version of the game that is not as easy to hack.

You can backup your steam files and recover them anytime later. And you dont really think that you buy only 1-time installation over steam, do you
CharmingCharlie
Why is it when someone asks a bloody question about steam it turns into a debate about how steam "sucks". We are lucky as PC users that we have services like steam, I know I have used it and never had a problem. I wouldn't necessarily use it for GTA 4 because I love the packaging that Rockstar use (the sleeved DVD cover is sublime). Anyway hope you are enjoying the game learn2forget even though you have played it on the console you may find that the PC brings a little extra special something to the mix . As I see it, most Steam titles are too expensive.
