Slamman Posted April 7, 2009 Share Posted April 7, 2009 (edited) I've been alternating between the two with regard to DVD, and often since my TV finally got CC onboard, I used it for old analog tapings as well. Often it's been said Americans have a hard time with subtitles. Even Japanese imported Episode One (Star Wars) had LD-G used for Japanese subtitles. I believe, without the proper LD player remote (mine supports LD+G) it could not be turned off. Another aspect of it on TV is that here in the USA, TV stations broadcast their ID logos while a program is running, often all the time, but God forbid, during an InfoMercial...that never happens!!!! papanesta Posted April 7, 2009 Share Posted April 7, 2009 The only time I really use subtitles is if I'm watching a foreign film, or if I'm watching a DVD and I can't make out what somebody said. For the latter, it really annoys me if there isn't English subtitles available. I often feel subtitles distract from what's going on, especially in films like Amelie, Oldboy, City of God, etc when what's going on is so beautiful. That said, I'm in the camp with Paps; I'd rather learn the language than have to read subtitles. They're so distracting from the visuals. But I suck it up. Hart Posted April 8, 2009 Share Posted April 8, 2009 It's pretty annoying, usually visually impressive films have quiet vocals in them. Especially Blade Runner, but putting subtitles on draws you away from the screen, as papanesta and Otter said. One thing that annoys me is when they don't have subtitles for commentaries. Usually they have two sets of subtitles, one for the film, and one for the special features commentary, but sometimes they leave it out and it's quite hard to hear sometimes. Spaced has their little homage-o-meter which is interesting to have on during repeat viewings. I think Shaun of the Dead has something similar. Pulp Fiction is another film with a trivia track. SWEETSAPRIK Posted April 8, 2009 Share Posted April 8, 2009 I have no problem with subtitles. I actually got used to having CC on a long time ago, and for some reason I have it on most of the time. I really only turn it off when I'm watching something where I fear the CC will get in the way. It did make me notice a couple of things though. With live TV a lot of the time there's this awesome combination of people who can't type fast enough to keep up with what's being said, and people who have the spelling of a third grader. I see homonyms quite often. With programs where the CC is translated into English from something else I sometimes see dialog that makes more sense in the scene than the spoken words. As if they had a better translator for the CC than they did for the script the people dubbing it read from. With programs that were always in English I sometimes see alternate lines with minor changes, and more interestingly I sometimes lines that were dropped altogether. PяopagaиdaIиc. And no matter what always Subtitles >>>> Dubed. I can't stand it when they show foreign film on TV and then DUB it. It never sounds good or looks right Agreed. Unless we're talking about animation, I've never seen a good dub. Not saying it can't be done, but that I haven't seen one. Sometimes, I forget the word in my language and instead I use English. For example, yesterday I forgot how to say tuxedo in my language. I watched Happy Gilmore in Spanish with English subs with my girlfriend, I understand Spanish, but my GF doesn't. And it missed out some really funny lines, and generally dumbed it down. Slamman Posted April 13, 2009 Author Share Posted April 13, 2009 I've noted on the box sets I mentioned, they forgo subtitles in English for Portugues, or French, which is understandable if marketed in Canada, but I often don't get the point to one foreign language added that isn't English, at least supplemented. The thing is DVD supports many subtitles within it's spec. The thing about TV and Closed Captioning that bothers me is when there's something added within a show, on purpose, you have two lines going on or sets of subtitles and CC and it's tough to keep up with that, as well, if they slow the pace down or up. When the CC section programming ends, a commercial for example... The Closed Captioning stays up on the screen covering the visuals. The imprinted Network Logos are bad enough, but this just adds to screen clutter, wish it would close itself after an interval of 20 to 30 seconds. On the subject of how funny Happy Gilmore is, it IS a very funny film in Sandler's body of work, I'd certainly watch it repeatedly, having bought it!
