radioman
The main character for GTA 3 was not officially given a name until San Andreas came out, and he (the main Character in III), made an appearance in a couple of cutscenes for SA. Before that, it was believed that the main character was not given a name so it could make it seem like you the player was actually a part of the game. After SA, the main character of III was known as Claude. To confirm this, watch the Cutscenes for the mission "Farewell My Love" and listen to the various phone calls CJ gets from Catalina from that point until the end of the game. Hope this helps. Vinnie
You've got to learn to search before posting, in fact I'm sure I've seen this same post before with the same spelling mistake on Vercetti. Â Before SA came out people would call him any of the following: Â Claude Speed - Due to a GTA 2 Video. Fido - This nickname comes from Maria who uses it a few times, and I still refer to him as Fido. Player - The default name of the player skin in GTA3 on the PC. stef_92
The name was only one time mensioned. It is in one call from Catallina after the last mission "End of the line": Â picture: http://i40.tinypic.com/2s0y2qq.jpg

It is in one call from Catallina after the last mission "End of the line":Â picture: http://i40.tinypic.com/2s0y2qq.jpg After the mission 'Home Coming' in SA, he's called Claude too. Also, don't forget that in one of the data files in III, the name 'Claude' is also seen. Inactive in GTA/R* title modification indefinitely pursuant to a court order obtained by TTWO. I'm still asking myself why rockstar didn't delete this data grom the GXT file? Did they forget about it or just they left it deliberately? Vinnie
Perhaps different groups of people were working on different builds and by time they decided to axe the name feature it would have taken too much time to go through the gxt files and remove entries, there are other things in there that didn't make it to the final and if it's not taking up too much space which it isn't there's no point of deleting it. Â Quite a few video games have leftover data when you look for it hard enough, for example Sonic 2 on the Megadrive has Ring Data for the Hidden Palace Zone level which is present in the beta, Super Mario World on the SNES has the Test level present in all unused level slots and Mario 3 has leftover levels. Â Even GTA LCS has leftover items from VC, and San Andreas has some unused interiors up in the sky. If there's no point of removing the data then they will leave it to save time, remember time = money. So I very much doubt someone sat there going through all of the GXT files before the final release and removed everything that is no longer being used. Slamman
Why did you even thought that? There's lots of differences between them... Ha ha ha I thought too. Actually the pics given below the quoted post, they're not that different in likeness, but yeah. I remember the debates over Fido or Claude? What say you? Â Fido was just something to latch onto as he was referenced on the first island. Sam Houser had been interviewed talking about a planned voice for the character, it had been planned to give him more identity but I assume the main reason is the job of the game creation took up more time in the other areas, and they had to make some concessions. Sam couldn't actually recall details about why the main character showed up as a mute, but he shed light on the planned voice, which was interesting to say the least, and that Claude Speed is accepted as his name

Slamman
How is it hard to understand that Fido is a nickname? Are you unaware of the concept of nicknames? No one is confused about that, what we're saying is that FIDO was a name of convenience. Claude Speed is the name accepted now, however, Still need some reference to the "Speed", I can't recall the origin, but I know Sam Houser made a comment I believe was in EDGE magazine talking about the whole series.
