New PC

Hey all,

I've been going around town, stopping by Frys, Best Buy, and some other electronics stores, trying to find the best pre-made gaming PC for its price, and I've found this: Gateway FX6800-01e.

Now, as far as I can tell, the only problems that I may have is with the power supply being a bit wimpy, and its inability to upgrade much. I can always buy a new PSU, and I don't really care if I can't replace parts every few months, because I don't really do that anyway. What I'm looking for here is general opinions from you guys about just how worth, or not worth, the cash this PC is. colgate.gif

Awesome deal. Definitely go for it ASAP. Should be able to handle all games out there with absolutely no problem (including IV).

Oh and a 500W PSU is more than enough for a 4850 as long as it can give the card enough amps on the 12V rails (which I'm sure it does since this is a prebuilt PC).

It also has a lot of room for upgrades, so no problem there.

So yeah, good deal. Go for it smile.gif.

Gateways are the only pre-built systems I trust, my old Windows 98 system from them was great biggrin.gif . However, I'd always

prefer to get a PC custom built. Nonetheless, good deal on that PC, go for it.

Thanks for your opinions. This encouragement outside of just the reviews on that website is what I was looking for. smile.gif

Have you purchased it? If so, that GPU will last you a while and is easily upgraded.

I've seen that one on the BB site for a while and it's always looked like a good deal to me. An i7 build will be a lot since compatible motherboards and RAM is still expensive even though the processors aren't that much (well, the 920 at least).

Don't worry about the power supply being too weak. I have a 4850 512mb myself, and if I had an i7-920 instead of the dual core E6600, combined with 1066Mhz 3GB of DDR3 RAM (over my slow 667Mhz 2GB DDR2), I'd be playing GTA IV just fine I'd bet. What I'm saying is you won't have to upgrade the graphics card for a while. And when you do just save another $100 for a stronger power supply wink.gif

My only concern is that your motherboard will contain a "locked" BIOS chip, hindering any overclocking capability.

Oh, and about the 4850. I've read some things about it, looked around a bit, and found that it's actually a 1GB model, so that'll be a pleasant surprise.

@elanman: No, I haven't purchased it yet. My family's refinancing the house at the moment, so we're trying to keep big purchases off until afterword. Of course, as soon as we can, we'll buy it. I was making sure that this would be a sound investment, and as far as I can tell, it is. tounge.gif

i have a gateway 5678, with a GeForce GTX 260 and a wimpy power supply (it says 750, but i'm only getting 550!).

Good power supplies usually put out 80% of the power, and that's only 600W out of 750W. So you're getting around 75%, which I don't think is bad.

Okay, apparently the board that comes with that PC is a Intel X58 board and is severely limited in overclocking features. So, don't get the PC.

It would be a waste to get a i7 and not overclock it as they're great overclockers.

Anyway, I've been able to get a better system for lesser than that PC. Just get the parts delivered to you and get a local store to build it for you for cheap. It's a way better deal too.

Just let me know if you're interested and I'll post it up wink.gif.

That's alright. If I needed to overclock (which I doubt I will), I'd just go ahead and replace the motherboard and upgrade the whole damn thing in one hit. smile.gif

As a bit of an update, I've decided I'd get This Monitor to go with my PC. The one they suggested was too pricey for me, and this seemed to have less problems.

These are the games I've been contemplating getting, as well as ones I already have (indicated by an askterik). The ones in bold are my priority at the moment.

  • Crysis & maybe Crysis Warhead
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Call of Duty 4
  • FSX*
  • GTAIV*
  • Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance*
  • Bioshock
  • Far Cry 2
  • Sims 3
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Age of Empires III*
  • Empire Earth 2*
  • Fallout 3
  • The Orange Box
  • Oblivion
  • Battlefield 2

Quite a lot, yes, but I'll be getting them over the next year or so. biggrin.gif

I wouldn't just not get a PC because the processor is good for OCing and the mobo doesn't allow it. It'll still be a kick as computer. While you may be limited in OCing, it doesn't make it worthless. Although it does somewhat bump the value of the PC down if you compare it to a build of your own where you'd be able to OC.

Do not trust GATEWAY, they have the worst warranty & computers, my friend had another gateway, it had a 8800GT & Phenom 9600, it was so horrid, there cases tend to heat up ALOT & once his computer died. He tried RMA it, he had to pay an extra 200$ for them to fix it and it took a whole month for them to ship it out. Plus customer support is horrid, you best bet is to build a computer like that for around the price of 600$ - 800$ devil.gif

Thanks a lot, mother. THANKS A LOT.

Seems like a lot of people are having trouble with Gateway, and they seem to be using cheap PSUs to keep prices down. 500W is enough for a system like that as I said before, but only if it's a good PSU and not some generic one.

Poopskin is one of them it seems.

Oh and that PC you're getting is a very good gaming PC. Why would you want to spend money on upgrades when you need more speed when you could've just overclocked?

Scratch that, get this instead. It's worth a lot more than the other one. Free shipping and $59.99 after mail-in rebate.

Meh, I got a 500w PSU for my server for $20 on ebay. Always a great place to check. Although check to make sure the power suplpy isn't three years old.

I have 3 Gateways in my house. 2 laptops, identical but one with 3GB RAM, and this 5 year old PC I'm on. None of them have overheating issues, and the only problems I've had with this computer is the virtual memory getting eaten up and needing to buy new RAM a few years ago. confused.gif Please don't base your argument off of one bad computer that your friend bought, as it REALLY makes you look bad when I've had excellent service and products from them. smile.gif

Due to a slip up with the bank, our refinancing is due a little earlier than usual, so I should be expecting the new computer at least before school's out. smile.gif

@poopskin: I've had the same problem with my parents. Their reasoning for it is because they suck at building things, and assume that I can't just read a f*cking guide and do something correct. I tried to tell them, "Hey, we can save about $500 if I just build it myself." "Oh, no, we don't want you doing that, you'll probably fry the computer or something, that's what happened to us." whatsthat.gif
